Unfortunately, my favourite is the one i built. No way to get the desired sound from the stock compressor of any kind. Sound engineer is making device to sound great like a musician does with a guitar. Period.
@@dummy0000000 I use an SSL XL desk which has the bus compressor built into it. I ran the same sounds into the native SSL bus compressor plug in as the built in SSL desk compressor and it was very hard to distinguish between them with a blind test.
I just checked, the Waves G also has a sidechain input, and you can easily prefilter the sidechain in daw, so it's not something that you can't do with the waves one. Oversampling is probably the only advantage the SSL native one has
Thank you, vs listening to the same song for 14:36 and the same plugin... vs A/B through out the whole video,,, sadly, I didn't see your comment until 14min LOL
I own the Waves SSL bundle and the SSL Native Essentials bundle, I definitely lean towards the SSL Native , I use the buss compressor on just about everything, I like the channel strip too but it’s not always my go to. I do love the 360 software when I am using a lot of instances of the SSL Native channel strip.
Great vid as usual. I stopped using the rip-off that is waves several years ago due to their ludicrous update plan. Constantly paying just to be able to use something I’ve already paid for. Effing chancers. The SSL native stuff is quality.
That 4x OS , for me, Makes the top end, say, smoother .... and as I own this, It seems to also translate the same way in my own projects.... Its a little magic, but as they say.. A Little can go a loooooong way.
I have both. And I have the hardware rack. The plugins have there place in mixing sessions but I usually opt for the analog hardware for mix&master bus duty. Having said that, the secret sauce is the auto release used in conjunction with the side chain/key input. The waves version works just as well as the native when used in this fashion which surprisingly isn’t explored in this 20 minute video lol. In fact, I’d venture to say the waves version in this scenario side-chained similarly at 80hz slowest attack & auto-release “analog” on would have won the shootout. Native one is good, but it’s no SSL. SSL sound has character and tone. Native version is colorless to my ears.
Usually im going to buy every ssl plugin but actually im really on a point to think about it if i really need it.. i got so many ssl like plugins.. actually im using fabfilter c2 with ssl like settings on my bus and im not shure if the native can do it better.. some say the amek 9099 sound better than ssl native.. i.got the amek so meaby i got the perfect combination? Dont know.. but another 50 bugs? Hmm..
I'd like to know whether you're going to use it on the master track or drum bus ? and should we dial up the sidechain knob a lil bit when we're using it on drum bus to free the kick sound ?
I literally just bought the Bus Compressor from waves...YESTEDAY lol...can you please tell me how can I achieve the same SC HPF from the SSL with the Waves setup? I figured I can high pass before the Compressor, but how would I then add it back in after its compressed? Thank you!
Method 1: Using a Dedicated Sidechain Filter Plugin 1. Insert a Sidechain Filter Plugin: • Place a plugin like Waves Q10 EQ (or any other EQ with high-pass filtering capability) before the SSL Bus Compressor on the same track. • Set a high-pass filter (HPF) in the EQ at the frequency you want (e.g., 60Hz, 100Hz, or higher). This will filter out the low frequencies before they trigger the compressor, preventing the compressor from reacting too much to bass-heavy content. 2. Route the Signal: • If your DAW supports sidechain inputs, you can send a filtered version of the track to the compressor’s sidechain input. However, since the Waves SSL G-Master Buss Compressor does not have a sidechain input, you’ll be relying on the EQ plugin in the regular signal path. Method 2: Parallel Compression with High-Pass Filtering 1. Set Up Parallel Compression: • Duplicate the track or create a send to an auxiliary channel. • On the auxiliary channel, insert the Waves SSL Bus Compressor. 2. Apply HPF on the Parallel Track: • Use an EQ plugin on the parallel track before the compressor to apply a high-pass filter. This way, the compressor will only react to the higher frequencies, leaving the low end untouched. 3. Blend the Parallel Track: • Blend the compressed signal from the parallel channel with the original signal to achieve the desired compression effect without compromising the low-end.
What are your favorite bus compressors?
ableton glue compressor with oversampling and soft clipper
I like bus compressor IK Multimedia =)
IK multimedia bus compressor on “the glue” preset
SSL Native

I've done an A/B with the real hardware SSL desk bus compressor and the native SSL plug in and they were very closely matched, almost identical.
Can you elaborate?

I saw the SSL channel strip and buss comp on sale for €50 and I grabbed it. They're both excellent, and have become invaluable.

Unbelievable what a difference with the sc hpf at 80hz, makes it sound a real record in seconds.

You're ending pitch was perfect. I'm sold.
The

IK Media Bus Comp
Slate FG Grey
and the Sand3 and Sand2 Bus Comps
Sound alot better than the Native SSL Bus Comp...trust me....

@@rome8180 version 9 plugins on an M1 Mac. No you can’t.
I like what the SSL does to the low mids but the IK is still my fave
I have both and I much prefer the SSL Native.
The free BusterSE SSL emulator by Analogue Obsession has the sidechain filters and sounds awesome.
It's odd that Waves wouldn't think to include it.
waves no have internal sidechain but you have a external sidchain input in this case you can put a eq with high pass for the same result
Love the Waves. Really Loving the SSL, LOVE the PA TOWNHOUSE. But they all sound different and you have to use the right tone for your song. Cheers!!!
Huge difference even listening on my iPhone 13. Got the new ssl buss and channel strip and love them both.
I prefer the SSL, though I hope that they were both calibrated with a tone.

Last thing, great song also I wish you had UAD and BX Townhouse to compare too but I'm sure SSL mark 2 would smoke them too.
Native is the best SSL plugin out there.
In the song, before the words "to someone" you can hear the audio cracking. Should increase the latency.
I would put a deesser first, that first S on suckerpunch is so harsh, there is also a delay on it to make things even worse.
Hi Dane! Super to see you.
I really wish it had a clipper like ableton's emulations does

I completely agree with you. Native is ok but as you;ve mentioned totally colourless.
Did by chance you also own the mk1 version of the SSL Plugin? If so, how does it compare to SSL Buss Plug compressor 2?
SSL sounds more 3D and open while the Waves sounds more flat and boring, the HPF on the SSL makes it even more usable
The high on the chorus come out better on the G series but you nailed the low and mids. but look how much more the SSL costs
The waves one will end up costing more because of WUP 😂
Great video!
Another great video there Dane! The difference was evident even playing this on my iPhone!

You can use it on both, and you should adjust the filter on a case-by-case basis
Dude you just killed my love to Waves Bus Comp on 14:38 it lost
Turning knobs while sound playing won't stop earth from spinning around the sun.

Sheesh! That waveform looks completely crushed! It's literally flat at the top and bottom.

I don't know why all waves plugins boost mono signals. It sounds like on your face. SSL Native Plugins are much better than Waves.
