To everyone who's watching this video. This video has done far better than I could've possibly imagined. I was expecting 40-100 views like my videos normally get but, 3.1k. That's insane. Thank you all for watching, commenting, subscribing, liking, and disliking the video. It means a lot to me that we can help people in any way with computers. I've got new videos coming every Wednesday and, if I miss one like I did last week. That's on me but, we'll keep trucking forward learning as much as we can, spreading the knowledge and, doing what we can to help each other in the community.

Good advice for pc builders - for games only. Save money with 12100 or 12400 and invest into good GPU (3070 or 3080) to get best price/performance. I have seen 30+ videos of CPU "compare" and "review" in gaming showing the same result - 5-10 fps difference overall. This video is another one to prove that, nice job!
Thanks man, I’m glad I could help
that's the worst advice I've ever heard, 12400 and a 3070 maybe but 12100? especially with a 3080? that's trash. fps aren't everything you need to think about the whole experience, and you're not gonna be playing on a PC that's running ZERO apps in the background so good luck with that the frame times will mostly be bad and you'll hate yourself from the stuttering and microstutters that happen. Oh and don't forget there are CPU intensive games out there (:
@@cydia11centra isnt 12400 enough?
@@cydia11centra Fair but, I did think about the whole experience. It was a fine experience. and granted I gave this i3 all the help in the world. with ddr5, fast storage, an amazing monitor. This i3 did keep up with the 3080 and that was the point. not recommending a certain hardware pairing but more so just seeing if it would work and, it did. It was also to give people confidence when pairing the i3 with anything because there exists a large stigma that i3s simply aren't worth the silicon. That was true in the past but not anymore. It's a very capable chip well worth it's silicon and, certainly worthy of being paired with a 3060 or 3070.
@@cydia11centra thats dumb you missed the point. if your budget was $1000 for a gaming pc then the advice is spend more money on a better GPU and then get a lower end CPU. also your brain is stuck in 2010 because since 10th gen, the i3 and i5s are gaming beasts much better than their ryzen equivalents. dont underestimate them, they will run great but they will obviously be bottlenecked if you’re using a 3090 with an i3 in 1080p
this i3 12100 is faster than an overclocked i7 7700k an intel 2017 high end processor, good job intel 👍
hopefully they won't skip the i3 for the 13th gen like they did on the 11th gen
Yep that part always amazes me because I remember drooling over the 7700k when it came out thinking imagine it playing all my games at high fps, now I have the 12100f that cost me $100 brand new playing those same games at even high fps 🤣
Almost nobody should buy an i3. When consumer grade i9's became a thing everything shifted.
i3 -> i5
i5 -> i7
i7 -> i9
Buying new, 4 cores in 2022 is just unserious. The user experience is just gonna be miserable. If you're planning on pairing an i3 with a high end gpu, you're better off building a balanced mid range system. Yeah your frames will be a bit lower, but at least you'll get good frame pacing and no stuttery garbage.
@@Rayer24 Wonder if Raptor Lake changes it? I could see i3 part having 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores (13600 is 6P8E, wonder if 13400 is 6P4E ?)
@@kimnice13400 is 4P4E
They did kinda release an 11th gen i3. It is actually called the 10105.
Very interesting video. I think this happens in games because most games were designed to run well in 4c-8t CPUs, besides the fact that game developers need to ensure their games will run in current and last gen consoles. Game devs are just starting to develop games using more of the CPU's capabilities. My humble 2 cents. keep it up!
Its a blessing I came across this brilliant video, as I was planning to buy a Gaming PC within budget. I could save a considerable amount with 12100 because it has all the power to run Prominent gaming titles with 1080p resolution. Thank you Sir.
Great video
Helped me a lot
Can't wait for that emulator console man, Keep up the good work
this actually made me so comfortable buying the i3
Thanks Sir.
I definitely enjoyed this video. Keep up the good work. I can’t wait to see your emulation one
It's already up but, I'll be honest it didn't turn out too well but, thank's for watching
% lows more important than average framerate imo. If you play on 1080p or lower for high refresh in shooters etc, the i7 or 12400 is needed. Look at the min FPS on CoD and Fortnite here, imagine you get these frame dips mid gunfight? On the other hand, I think a 12100 would be just fine for high resolution single player games.
Fair but no, those frame dips were at the starts of matches and loading screens
Thanks for the video. I always hear that the 12th generation i3 has very very powerful cores.
They’re actually really amazing it really surprised me
if you target 4k60 or 1440p60 then you wont ever feel held back by the i3. for higher fps targets though it just won't keep up
Thanks for the vid. Wonder how my old i7-6700K compares and whether it would be worth replacing with this. p.s. You have a laid back but informative presentation style which I like a lot. Hope you make some more vids.
6700k is going to bottleneck a higher end card like this I used to run a 6800k and it was pushed pretty far with a 1080
great video that's some savings for a PC build 🙂
I have a 8th gen quad core i3, found a new 3070 for $499 so I ordered it, not sure how bad the cpu is going to hold it back but it should still perform better than the 1050TI that's in it now. I plan on upgrading to a i5 or I7 before Starfield drops.
How do you measure the min max and avg FPS? what programs?
Great job. Keep it up and you'll be telling Burke "What for."
I have an i7 4770 thats finally starting to feel quite old. This new i3 seems like a good upgrade, its the same core/thread count but much faster and a lga 1700 board offers me good upgrades at a later date.
I used to have a rig with a 4790, they’re ere some of the best CPUs ever made
This would be an ultimate upgrade over the 4770! Do it!!!!
Ddr3 bandwidth hurts haswell performance. Fantastic chips otherwise.
Better upgrade to an i5 than 4 cores again.
@@CablesTech I literally just upgraded from i7 4790 to i3 1200f, this cpu is crazy fast. I was looking for a long time what i wanted to buy, maybe used 9th gen or someting. And then this popped up and i was blown away. Only shame that the motherboards are so expensive nowadays, i wanted ATX but its just so much money i dont want to spend lol
Good stuff..thank you :)
You should do the caparison in a video rendering program
what I noticed is the CPU usage, on the games you demoed my i7 average around 3% and the temps are around 45c
I did a budget build several years ago with the i3 and my friends couldn't believe I'd go with such a low end component but it's been nothing but awesome. Doing a rebuild of this rig with 12th gen and picked the 12100f for the build (should be here tuesday). People really shouldn't sleep on the i3, it's a great product.
I replaced a hard drive in an old i3 apu laptop with a cheap ssd, and for most things, I can't tell any difference with my 9th gen i7, 1660Ti laptop.
You see, the bottleneck is the 4kbaud modem.
that description was perfecto
Thank you
Great advice. If you are a PC gamer and not a video editor or something else, getting a minimum i3 and paring it with a last gen 70 tier GPU, in this case an i3-12100F and an RTX 3070 is a great option, as it wont bottleneck as badly as one might think.
Great video bro
Thx for that tests , I have i3 12100f with 6600xt and I can play warhammer total war 2 in 1080p with 90 fps, I love it, that budget pc cost me 2 weeks ago 800£

Games today are usually GPU limited. not to mention games aren't heavily threaded is more dependent on clock speeds and IPC.
Many that said my cpu will bottleneck, they dont know whats bottleneck are, just overclock the cpu or ram so will you be fine or get a i3 with new gen 4-5 up after that, that is almost the cpu not the gpu that will bottleneck
Less crashing... maybe less voltage spiking? I don't know.
i just built a system with that motherboard and CPU. its amazing. compares to my i7 11700 build just fine. which is crazy
With 12th gen do you disable ecores in gaming? Or has the windows 11 jank been resolved?
I don’t have any of my e cores disabled on my i7 and don’t notice any weird issues with it in windows 11
Amazing video. Do you think that the i3 12100F will handle a 6700XT?
The 3080 12gb is significantly faster than the 6700xt so yes but, you’ll probably be losing a few fps on the high end at 1080p
Idk if you noticed but the i3 1440p graph at 4:16 is showing the maximum FPS being below the average FPS... Maybe the wrong number was inputted for the graph there but this is an in informative video regardless!
LOOOOOOL, I didn’t notice that
On normal games scenario, an i3 12100 or i5 12400 is already plenty of power to play modern games (paired with anything better than an RTX 3050 at least. But even the 3050 is still capable, just not worth the price).
On emulation scenario, however, a jump from an i3 12100 into an i7 12700 is very noticeable, especially if you’re emulating ps3 games. I currently have no problem with a core i7 6700K that is paired with an RTX 3060, but i could use the cpu upgrade in the future.
yeah games can't keep up with the power of an I3 the extra cores on the i5 and i7 are doing nothing just there to give you a higher number
2060 beats the 3050 in almost everything. I'd save bit and go with that id in that price range. Or sale 6600.
@@PDXCustomPCS definitely. I also recommend getting an RTX 2060 for a friend who will be building a pc soon. It’s way better than a 3050 (performance and price wise). Also no problems with the lack of VRAM, since i bet he didn’t like newer AAA games anyways (also not playing above 1080p)
I have a i3 13100f and using 3060 ti, pretty cool cpu for its price!
I have an i7-8700 with a B365 motherboard and I always game at 1080p, so is it worth upgrading from an i7-8700 to an i3-12100f?
Honestly probably not, you have 2 more core and 4 more threads than the i3. It’s also not at the point where it’s showing it’s age yet. I’d wait another generation or two then upgrade to a i5 or i7. It’ll still be a while before I recommend replacing a high tier product with a low tier product. If you had a 2nd or 3rd generation i7 it would probably be worth the upgrade but not with something that recent
@@CablesTech Ok, thank you for the reply. 😁
I5 12600k is probably the best cpu on the market today not only does it have the same gaming ability as all the 12th gen cpus ... but the extra cores give it just the right amount of pep in multitasking and multithred workloads over the other cpus
With a price thats spot on
And tdp that makes cooling a breeze
Kind of debating on what to buy.
i3 12100f or 12400F paired with an rtx 3050(or 1660ti). I am tight on budget but i still want to screen record games like valorant without lag.
Since you’re pairing it with a 3050 and you’re on a tight budget. I personally would go for the i3 to save the money. You can offload the video recording to the GPU using shadow play. You’ll record gameplay with near lossless quality and near lossless frame rates
The 12400f is better value than the 12100f, but the 12100f is still not a bad choice. If you don’t care about RT or DLSS I would go with 12400f and GTX 1660 ti.
GTX 1660 ti is better rasterization performance than RTX 3050 while also being cheaper msrp
12100f
get the I3 and record with the GPU.
hi bro do you think i3 9th is enough for rtx 3050 ???
Almost certainly, the 3050 has comparable performance to a gtx 1070 and that i3 and 1070 make a decent pair
This cpu should do well with 4090 if played in 4k
Thank you for the video. I was worrying if it will bottleneck with Rx6600 or 3060
Glad I could help
From what I've seen E cores are more trouble than they are worth, especially if gaming is your only cpu intensive task. I will probably be going AMD next gen if there isn't a 13400 equivalent with no E cores
I’ll be honest with you, I can’t tell if my e cores are ever doing anything and I think that’s the point
yeah they sould do a special gamers CPU without E-cores but 8P-cores only should be great ..
Should I upgrade my ryzen 5 5600x to a ryzen 7 5800x when I get my 3070?
Honestly probably not, Ryzen CPU’s especially just add more of the same cores and an extra two cores going from 6-8 won’t make your games faster
Will a 5600x cpu be enough for RX7000 or RTX4000 series when they come out?
@@eye776 what about 4090 or 7900?

A good rule of thumb is if you cant feel stuttering, hitching, high frame times, or general weirdness when gaming. You're probably fine
What games are you playing and what resolution? The 11600K has 6 cores so it's not that bad. But you would benefit from more.

@@CablesTech just checked it after playing Forza horizon 5. and the GPU was on 💯. and the cpu at 79% Load at its highest
My Rx580 8gb is actually bottlenecking this Cpu really bad, its funny because its an I3😂. I get about 25% - 30% cpu usage and 100% gpu usage in all my games😅. I upgraded Cpu from an old Fx 8320 that was at 80%+ usage in the same games, for some reason the FX never showed 100% usage but yea this I3 is literally a highend i7 from a few years ago
Also I think they changed the binning process a bit for the 12th gen, I believe the highly binned Cpu's become the i9's and the i7's, i5's & i3's are on the same performance cores with the i5 and i7 having just more working cache after manufactured and the lower binned cores become the E-cores. That's probably why your I3 is almost on par with your i7.
How would the i3 compare to an i7 11700f? I have both of those and I can’t tell
The difference between the two
Good question, and I’ll be honest I don’t actually know because I don’t have a 11700f but if I had to make a guess. I’d say the IPC of the newer i3 is better than your i7. It’s on a newer architecture so that makes sense. But your i7 has a high enough clock speed to counter that and then some. It’s also a 8 core 16 thread chip. So your i7 likely has better single core and multi core performance.
@@CablesTech that makes a lot of sense! Thank you
@@astheniacat8710 look at the 11 series as a 10 series but with pcie4 support. No real gain in performance in these tick tock generations. look at 12th gen being at least 25% better ipc.
The f is for fudged when diagnosing a problem 😂
For non-competitive SP players like me, an i3 which gets me >40fps, is very playable. Microstutters is a minor issue. Beautiful visuals matters more to me. I'm used to the pathetic PS3 and Xbox 360 stuttery 30fps gaming with lots of tearing, so i3+3080 is already a HUGE step-up in maximal visual fidelity @ playable framerate for the lowest-possible price. Competitive players will want at least an i5 though.
Iam planning to get an i3 12100f and a RTX 3070. Will it bottleneck ? i mostly play only single player games and rainbow six siege. I only use my pc for gaming. Due to tight budget i wont be able to go with i5 12400f

I'm guessing that's a gaming beast, but a little slower on video editing.
i am surprised the difference in the fortnight title as it was designed when 4 CPU cores was the design target CPU
I think in most games it has a lot less to do with the amount of cores the cpu has because of hyper threading and a lot more to do with the i7 is boosting to 5.0 ghz and the i3 is only at 4.2
games are all gpu bound so a decent cpu is fine, you don't need the best in cpu's and you can actually save a lot of money by not buying the fastest cpu on the market. You're better just getting an Intel i5 or i7 and or Ryzen equivalent and spending the a big amount on the gpu but that also depends if you want to game in 1080p, 1440p or 4k. My setup has an Intel i9 10900k and a 2080super gpu but my gpu struggles to play games in 4k at 60fps so I should have brought an i5 or i7 and a 3080. That would have been a much better setup for 4k gaming for me as I am a casual gamer and not a competitive gamer.

i been intel for many years but now my eyes are looking right>>>> 3D Cache Escape from tarkov loves that cpu but i want the new platform and wait for the 78003D if it comes.
You'd want 6 cores minimum today even at 4k, my 6700k is struggling with my 3080 in certain games at 4k
It’s almost always better to have more cpu cores. However the i3 honestly did amazing I’ve ran it through basically my entire steam library and more often than not I was limited by the gpu at 4K not the cpu. I think the optimization with the windows 11 scheduler is working wonders
The cores of the 12100 are sooo much faster than a 6700k's cores that this math does not add up. Core count must always be looked at in relation to core speed
It isnt that simple core count isnt why thats struggling those cores are much slower than the ones in the modern i3
great post, do you think a i5 11600K will bottleneck a RTX 2060 6GB?
I highly doubt it
I fully intend to combine Ryzen 5 3600 with RTX3080.
It's not absolutely terrible for content creation.
It isn't 5800X3D or 5900X or even 5700X, but for a complete begginer it sufficient.
As is 12100F.
Certainly significant improvement over my Ryzen 3 2200G.
On both fronts
Eventually later next year upgrade to 5800X3D or something to have a rig to last me a lifetime. 😆
idk if it'll last a lifetime, but it'll certainly last until the 3080 isnt kicking anymore.
The i3 is not the bottom of intels product stack. Intel has pentium below that and celeron even bellow that.
i wanted to see in msi afterburner if the i3 was going up to 100% usage while the gpu is less than 90% usage..... that would mean that the i3 cant handle the 3080 but if the gpu was 99% and the i3 was less than 90% usage then its good..... but this video doesnt have it
At lower resolutions the i3 and 3080 were both at 90-100% and at 4K the i3 was between 70-90% with the 3080 pinned between 95-100%
12100f....100e .....good performance all around
Not to mention the i7 has way more cache.
Games that are sensitive to that will show a good difference.
The current i7s are absolute monsters in compute performance and so is even the i5 12600k but, the point of the video was that the current i3s punch well above their weight class and are more than capable of gaming especially in budget rigs

Considering how fragile those sockets are I would need more cause to mess with it besides a speed comparison. I know the pins are easy to bend, destroying the socket effectively of course. I wonder if there is a limit to how many times a CPU can be inserted and removed before the next processor starts behaving weirdly because of the worn out socket. Usually a CPU socket is something you would insert a CPU into for long term use really.

It could. But if you have 3080 money you have enough to invest in a 12400 or even a 12600k.
Not always, if all youre going to do on your PC is game and you have, say 1200-1400 Dollars for your tower. You can say spend 800-1000 of that on a GPU then the rest of that on the rest of your system you'll have 100ish dollars for you CPU which would likely be a i3 12100 or something in that class. A system like that while unconventional will still be the fastest for purely gaming that you can afford.

That’s honestly fair. I have them in my main rig because it’s one of those things you either never use/need or when you do need them you NEED them
If you actually have high end gpu like this go for at least i5-12400, because newer games like Cyberpunk will benefit from additional cores.
I’ll be completely honest with you, when I swapped my i7 for the i3 it was only temporary so I can’t tell you about long term usage but, I did use it for a week and during that week the only time I noticed I didn’t have my i7 in my system. Was when I was video editing

1440p+ = high end gpu + low end cpu
bottlenecking is real but depends on your resolution
12100 is best bang for the buck ever. Spend all that savings on a better gpu!
Me with a i3 7100 and Intel HD 630 : _😐👍_
Hey man, the baldurs gate dark alliance 2 remaster dropped a couple days ago. It’s a pretty solid game and you might be able to run it
I’m so happy I chose the i3 lmfao
I would get i5 instead
yeah 12400f is incredible for a little amount of money more. because if you build your computer 60$ will change nothing at the end.
Fair but not entirely true, someone who has a fixed budget like a kid spending birthday money. 60 dollars could be the difference between building a pc and being able to play call of duty with their classmates or being stuck playing free games that their friends won’t play
@@CablesTech This could also be the difference between a 3060 And a Ti or 3070 in your build. Far better options when you have an extra $60 for the GPU, depending on its class.

I3 is not bottom of the barrel a Celeron or Pentium is the bottom of the barrel i3 is still got some power to it most games use only 4 to 6 cores and so this is why he's not seeing a difference in gaming performance
That’s exactly right
@@CablesTech makes you wonder how well a 12th gen Celeron or Pentium would do gaming compared to the i7 and i3 in this video
@@raven4k998 Honestly with the Best celeron from this generation being a 15w chip and the 12th gen pentium being a dual core at about the same price. I would'nt even try
@@CablesTech you should try fewer cores may make all the difference besides you have the i7 to go back to afterwards do it so others can see how those chips perform without paying for them blindly
