I used to make fun of these until the day my mate picked up one of these and took me for a drive. One owner, 175,000km and garaged all its life.
Man they are so spacious and comfortable, suspension soaks up the bumps and you can stretch your legs which is ideal if you're taller.
It got into a crash and was written off, it wasn't even my car and im still sad thinking about it. Definitely an Australian classic. Great video.

There's a reason everyone learns wheel bearings at 16. Because by that point the person doing the hard work can't stand doing them anymore and wearing their palms raw that they hand it down to the new kid

I remember the VN when they were new. As an apprentice they pulled like a freight train up to about 80kms an hour, but ran out of puff pretty quickly. But they were allot better than the EA with the 3 speed auto, geez, they were bad accelerators, but better top end.

My first job was working for John at DEER PARK MOTORS, Mechanical basic work, tyres, wheel bearings ,tunes oil changes etc, when i was only 15 as well. :) the trick with install of wheel bearings is not to use a punch to tap them in, you use the old bearing caps to tap the new ones in. Just one slip of a centerpuch or wrong tool on the cap and you have nothing but noise and then you have to do the job all over again and most people don't buy the tools required just for replacing wheel bearings / caps ? Especially modern cars with ABS ECS etc etc. 🏎👌✌👍😊🙌 Scotty mate when doing the work on the bearings you have to have the solid table so you can tell when its metal to metal noise as well, when putting the bearing cups in, using the old cups is just as good when installing the new ones. :)

Had an old vn was the best car I ever owned. Flogged the absolute guts out of it! Had a locked diff only thing I ever had to fix on it was power steering pump. It lived in limiter & I used to blow sets of tyres every week as a young fella. looking back I should of stuck it in the garage it was quite a clean example too.

I'd still be pumped to see a turbo installation on the Barina. I don't know why I am so hooked on the Barina, because I've never seen one before, but I'd be really interested in seeing you run it at the strip with the bigger engine standard, and then installing a properly designed turbo kit and running it again at the strip to see how much it's picked up. That being said, I'm really excited to see how this old girl does!

Holy crap you owned/built V6 Vengeance? How did a VN fanatic like me miss that, i used to buy Street Commodores as religiously as i have bought Street Machine (since the early 90’s to present day) and used to look forward reading the next instalment of V6 Vengeance even though my VNs were all 5Ls back then seeing a V6 one being built was so cool.
Loving this build so much, i could bore you stupid with all the VNs ive owned and still own currently the collection is around 8, VN Calais 355 project, A VN V6 skid car with twin throttles done as a atlas grey SS replica, a VN LE, VN Berlina Formula and a few VN parts cars on the farm.
But i also have a couple of AU paddock bashers out on the farm too so these days I understand how awesome AUs are.

Scotty i hope you got a E85 fuel sender casket to suit the VN, as that old casket is not going to last long at all, get a new one mate?

Also, get some tube cutting shears man, heaps good to chop hoses

Easier sometimes to just slap new rotors on. No need to punch out old races and you know the brakes will be mint

I don't know who did the audio for this episode, but the music that subtly comes in at the greasing of the wheel bearing had me genuinely laughing out loud. Well done 👍

Oh man... Really has been a while since V6-Vengeance hasn't it? Sure as hell making ME feel old! I actually had a 'subscription' to STREET COMMODORES back in the day, pretty much just to make sure I never missed anything on the progress of that project! Heck, I'd go so far as to say that a great deal of my interest in 'aftermarket modification and performance' was motivated by that magazine and V6 Vengeance (admittedly along-side the first 'The Fast and the Furious' movie).
Anyway, you can rest assured that I'll be following this build just as closely!
These days I have "Baby", my series 2 VX Berlina to mess around with. She'll only ever be a "Daily", but I still have plenty of plans all the same. Performance wise, that means a full NA rebuild of the Ecotech with a bunch of extra bits culminating in a 'mild' (stage 1) cam overhaul. I'll only be able to so much myself, with limited tools and no 'workshop space' (beyond the driveway of my flat), but I definitely plan to 'get my hands dirty' and do what I *can* do myself. And who knows, once things start opening up again, maybe I'll see you at Calder, or far more likely since I'm in Bendigo - Heathcote!

Brilliance..... but you didn't show jamming a socket between the brake pads to stop em bleeding in when doing wheel bearings 🤣🤣🤣🤣

VN Berlina's had Steel Wheels with hubcaps. The Allioy's are the correct option for the VN. I think from memory, it was an option through 'Holden By Design'.

Actually those VN alloy rims were a standard option not a Holden by design option

When you get new shock absorbers keep the thick wire that holds them compressed and cut them in half, bend them into a S shape and you'll have a set of brake caliper hanging hooks. Instead of hanging them by the hose. You can hang them up out of the way for removing/replacing the suspension parts.

I wonder how good you can do for the 3.6 Alloytech? I mean factory twin vvt, designed by Ricardo who engineered racecars for mclaren, factory forged crank, twin oil squirters coil on plug etc..
I'm sure it's gotta be good for 700+ with the right set of parts and a good 30pounds. but no one has done anything with these engines, so we don't know.

    • @STREETMACHINETV

I'm betting that odo isn't showing the full extent of its history. notorious for having a drive gear break when the set button is pressed (vn to vs). easy fix though, judging by the low amount on the trip meter it was changed recently
