Sitting on the Bench: Thoughts on Suicide Awareness and Prevention

  • There is no easy solution for helping someone who has thoughts about suicide. But there are some things we can do to reach out to them.
The most common sources of pain for someone having suicidal thoughts are feeling disconnected from other people, feeling like they’re a burden to others or that people would be better off without them. Coupled with the hopeless thoughts that things aren’t going to change, suicidal thoughts become risky.
For some, like Seth Adam Smith, the right words spoken by another can change a life. Seth’s depression caused him to attempt suicide. He was miraculously saved, and when he awoke, his older brother’s words changed everything. “You know, Seth,” his older brother said, “I almost lost my little brother. … I don’t think I’m going to go anywhere for a while.”
While it may seem too simple, sometimes words of comfort, support, and love can be life-changing for someone who doesn’t feel needed.
Sometimes those suffering with depression and suicidal thoughts don’t even need words. They just need someone to sit with them. They need someone to be there for them. They need to feel loved and valued.
Elder M. Russell Ballard counsels us not to judge, but to reach out. “It doesn’t mean you’re going to be able to heal people, … but we can have an impact in guiding people to some of the resources out there.” He reminds us that we can be one of those resources. “There is nothing more powerful than the arm of love that can be put around those who are struggling.”

Idc what anyone says.. I'm tattooed, swear, drink rarely, smoke cigarettes, trying to be better, living in Mormon capital of the world... This video helps. My boss from work sent this video to me via text after I told him he was going to need to plan for my replacement because I was done. He has always been a good friend. I'm glad he sent it. I have one .38 casing and one .9mm casing both should've been the ending to my story. This video make you really think in that moment of giving up. So share it. Some don't want to talk but will watch a video. So share the message. With anyone you know struggling.

Being a Latter Day Saint seeing how families should be and knowing how one should feeling and having none of that, year after year takes it's toll. It's really hard when you know that know nobody will miss you, there is nobody that needs you or wants you. People don't die from suicide they die from loneliness and sadness.

I'm happy for Sean that he has a brother that loves him THAT much. I do not have that. I truly don't have a sibling or a friend that cares for me half that much. You mention that there are people in your life that want you around and that care for you. Some of us honestly don't have that. If I die, there is literally no one outside of acquaintances. No one would miss me.

almost 3 years ago, at almost 22 years old i almost took my own life. I was abused as a kid, broken, depressed, anorexic, bulimic, suicidal. I went in & out of psych units like it was a game of Chess. Suicide watch. I was on enough Antidepressants to kill a horse. I hated myself. I wanted out. I wanted the pain to stop. The gaslighting* to end. *(when a psycho makes a sane person question their own sanity, and thus think they themselves are the insane one).
I wanted power. I got into witchcraft. I thought it would give me the identity i wanted, to be set apart from people who hurt me. It only made me sicker. Sicker. Thats what it did to me.
The doctors said i’dnever get well. That i would suffer severe Chronic Manic depression, and never be well, that id be stuck on antidepressants all of my life.
I would plot suicide on a daily basis, binging and purging my food as often as opening and closing a door. The pain was too real. People choked me. Assaulted me. Told me i was ugly, i felt worthless. Nothing ever got better. Then my mother died. The (1) & only soul who ever loved /emotionally supported me was removed from the earth. I was stuck living with people who broke me, ruined my identity, thus causing me to hate God. I thought God hated me, that he was just like the ones who tortured me, a family of abusers, who cover up all their actions with the mask of religion. I didnt know that God is on my side. I didnt know that Jesus would Love and Defend me, and fight for me and that He later would heal me, rescue me from Family. The ones who caused me pain. The ones who choked me for wearing a necklace.
I moved out after family threatened to throw all my belongings on the front yard, and have me permanently institutionalized in an insane asylum, when they were the ones who caused my mental illness via abuse.
They blamed me for the abuse they did to me.
To take my life in an insane asylum when they were the ones who made me suicidal.
Next morning i spoke with my dead moms parents who let me live with them.
I stayed on the antidepressants, prescribed. But they only made me sicker. I got deeper and deeper into witchcraft, thinking it was a solution. But it made me even more suicidal. Self hatred was inescapable. All my cards have fallen down. I have nothing left. But out. I wanted out.
I decided i was going to kill myself. I was going to take all my pills.
But then Jesus stepped in. I didnt die. I surrendered my life to Jesus to make me well and heal me.
The deity i blamed for me being abused wanted to heal me. He Was fighting for me and Loved me all along.
He wanted to love me. He wanted to give me His Heart.
HE LOVES ME. JESUS. LOVES. ME .
Jesus miraculously healed me - i am off all drugs and dont need them and i dont have any mental illnesses. I have a job and am totally healed , full of joy.
I’m now a born again Christian, in my 20’s who wants the entire world to know that JESUS WANTS TO HEAL YOU
    HE. LOVES. YOU.

There are thousands of LDS Military Service Members who suffer every day. You may not even see their struggles from the surface, but they are there. Instead of avoiding them or letting them be, just be there for them. Even if you have no idea what they are feeling, be honest and tell them. But don’t leave it at that, tell them that you will do your best to understand and be there no matter what.

i have been sitting here watching almost all of the video;s, and of course in deep thought. in the past 2 months two young men iknow have taken their lives, one was just barely 18 attending snow college, we do not understand why he did this. he did go out and purchase a gun, of course said nothing and shot hisself, also this young man about 18 months earlier his brother age 20 his girlfriend had broke up and he found a quiet place and shot hisself , did signs appear with the brother ?ifso no one noticed they were watching but the younger boy seemed to be ok,but he was not .======= now the other young man happened to be the granson of my late sister,he had a lot of problems but seemed to be ok, he lived at home and he chose to take his life by hanging in his own back yard.needless to say this has made all of us on guard. we feel very sad and tearfull, what did we miss? with the first boy who had shot hisself there wasa lot of family discussions they were very worried about how it of course had affected the younger brother but he seemed well enought to be able to leave home for school. -----

Why would a loving and merciful God allow suicide

    • @stephenpeterson7430
      @stephenpeterson7430 Год назад

I've been asking myself that question for the past year and a half. I lost 2 close family members to suicide only 60 days apart from each other. Ever since then, I've wondered, "How could God let this happen? How could anything good come from this?" I felt as if everything good in the world had been taken away, leaving nothing but darkness and despair. It took me a while to find any joy in life again. I still don't have all the answers, but the things I do know are this:
      1. We have to trust that God sees the bigger picture.
      2. D&C 122:8 -- "The Son of Man hath descended below them all..." Our Savior already knows exactly what we're going through. So he knows how to help us get through it.
      3. One of our greatest gifts from God is our agency. He will never take away our freedom to choose.
While life is still really hard, I choose to believe that God knows better than I do. Even though we're separated for now, I believe that I will see my family again.

Because He respects our agency. Think about what it would really mean if God didn't "allow" things to happen.
