  • On August 19, 2023, Conserving Carolina and Walnut Creek Preserve held a free lecture entitled "The Summer Sky - Surfing the Milky Way," presented by April Ryan, volunteer with the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) at the Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center.
Participants learned about our solar system: planets, supernovas, galaxies, deep space, and beyond. April explained our galactic neighborhood, close to home and millions of light years away. Additionally, she explained our earth’s climate, the planets of our solar system, and techniques used to observe other parts of the galaxy in an effort to learn more about how our own sun and planets came into being. Travel 4.5 billion years into the past, when our sun was born, and up to the current day and learn about how events in the past help teach us about the fate of our planet Earth.
PARI is the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute, a non-profit dedicated to STEM education and space science outreach. A former NASA site that was originally built in the 1960’s as a secret base for satellite technology development, the site is now open to all as PARI hosts public and private events, tours, open houses, summer camps, field trips, and more.
PARI operates by the immense help of our volunteers, donors and community partnerships to reach as many people as possible.
