Somehow I find myself coming back to this video every year, but not only every year MULTIPLE TIMES every year around ski season. Niko really made a masterpiece of a ski movie, from the cinematography, music, and the way the story was told I nearly cant bring myself to watch another ski movie because I don't think any can compare.
Thats the thing with avalanche danger, everything can go well for years and you think, you can kinda estimate the risks pretty good. Then you have a season where you suddenly trigger multiple avalanches and it makes you doubt. You actually never know how close you were in previous season to trigger an avalanche, you thought you were in control all those years but you cant know for sure how few was missing for that avalanche to trigger. Maybe you actually were in control and you just had an unlucky season now, thats the thing you cant know, and suddenly from a pretty confident spot these experiences are making you doubt yourself. As older you get, you experience more of these situations and only then you really realize to what danger you expose yourself. It for sure changes you, but better to turn back once too much than once too little. I really enjoyed watching this, its the perfect mix of skiing, story and jokes. Everything was so good, really good work! But how are these Pov shots real? They look crazy fast

As someone who has lost a loved one in an avalanche, it kind of breaks my heart to see you guys taking such a light hearted approach with the avalanche risk. I mean I'm glad you put it out there and it is your decision what kind of risk you want to take. But in some situations you get the feeling that you guys are not completely aware of the actual risk. I think it's the situation you put yourself into, the boat renting, the film making and the people that create an environment of pressure. It takes so long to approach these faces and you don't get many opportunities to ski them and that lets you brush away your doubts and handle the situation way differently than you would under different circumstances. I am sure you know from your experience that there are kinds of avalanche which you can't 'outrun'. And the one you showed was a typical slab avalanche and it was just luck that you evaded it... If you wait for the right conditions you can do these faces at some point in your life. Maybe not all in the same trip, but if you take your time you will live longer and can also enjoy other things in the meantime.
Thanks for the words Christof. I’m lucky to never have lost someone close to me in an avalanche, I’m sorry to hear you have. Just to give you a bit more context, what this movie doesn’s show is the two months leading up to this trip where we don’t ski avalanche terrain because of a persistent weak layer. Also note the different course of action in the last couloir and the face that slid. Where an avalanche in the couloir pretty would almost certainly mean death, the face that slid not only had high points to pull out on, but also a fairly clean outrun without any terrain traps. I have skied lots of faces like that in my life, and I’m well aware of how few and far in between the good days are. This time we made the wrong call. The plan is not to do that again. I’m speaking to an avalanche psychologist on a livestream tonight at 20.00 CET if you’d like to chime in there. The link is in the stories on my instagram
@@Nikolai_Schirmer Don't get me wrong this is a fantastic movie, the skiing is amazing, snow is dream like, scenery just breath taking and I probably would've done the same a few years ago. You guys knew, at least to some extent, that you were taking a big risk at multiple occasions in this movie but still did it anyway. In the end I think for a passionate skier, taking the right actions for risk mitigation just hurts too much because it means less skiing in epic conditions. We should try to find a way around this. it doesn't mean we can't have fun, there is plenty of less exposed lower angle terrain to play around in until safe conditions are there :) Stay safe

Last year, at 55, i climbed and snowboarded down one of the steepest escarpments in the US, near Palm springs CA. I was not in trained shape, I made 2 prior attempts and had to gather gear and retrain skills each time. It took me one whole day from early morning to well after dark, and the ride was the shortest. The best feeling was climbing up the face and being at the top, seeing the Pacific ocean on one side and the desert more than 2 miles below. I was hurting for a few days after. I don't know if that's the last time I'll ever do it. Ive been looking up at that way for years, dreaming of doing it. It didn't change my life. It used to be something to tell others, but people my age either don't believe me or likely dont care. Something happens when you age, and I don't think it's physical. The mundaneness of even making money and having things can be so deadening. I guess in order to feel alive and away from the nonsense, I just had to climb and do something that, if I perished, would at least be something grand.

This has got to be one of the best of your films that I’ve watched, and so much more to the adventure than just skiing incredible lines! Truly a dream trip
Simply incredible. The impeccable sound design, the mind blowing cinematography and a dreamlike terrain are one thing, but the one thing that strikes the most in this movie is the storytelling, how you can get attached to total strangers in a 43 minute RUclips movie. The connection between you guys seems so pure, you're like the ray of sunshine that illuminates the whole mountain. You are deserving of everything good coming your way, Thank you guys for making such a touching piece of art.
Nikolai, thank you so much for this film. You’re filling a vast void in the ski industry where few people really talk about the risk, and demonstrate their thought process. We are tons of people shredding, but you’ve shredded and shown the whole package. As someone who’s been involved in an avalanche, and still aspires to ski bigger terrain. I appreciate you! Beautiful cinematography, incredible skiing. You’re the man.
This should be in IMAX theaters everywhere !!! excellent. When I was younger my buddies and me used the phrase " ski to die " and we skied places like it was our last day.Of course. we didn't want to die but we skied the adventure. and we had some adventures that were worthy of film but we didn't have GoPro then.
Seriously this is beyond awesome, you 2 are my favorite backcountry team to watch. So cool to see Krister have a big part in this! Its honestly so much more interesting to watch you guys explore, have fun and backoff sometimes then those huge productions with dudes doing backflips ;)
that ice axe arrest footage was pure madness, it's really hard to stop once you reach that speed, I know, I was lucky once to . . . so glad it worked for you . . .
Thanks for telling the story of the accident. Was the main takeaway to pay more attention, specifically to rapid warming in this case? And what's the point of digging a pit once you're high up in the exposure? Was there a very safe exit strategy should the pit reveal the slope to be sketchy?
Mixed feelings. I loved the film, but if you guys keep on "just sending it" you will eventually die in the mountains. We will then move on to the next channel, but your families and friends will be heartbroken for ever. You have the skills - skiing, film making, camaraderie, philosophy and environmental respect to make the best mountain content on youtube without needing to almost die to keep viewers. I would have enjoyed it more if the runs were less "spicey" so I didn't have the feeling I could lose you at numerous moments. So only 3/5 from me.
My god Niko, I don't even know where to begin. This is "Free Solo" level stuff but with a tiny and embedded crew. This is adventure filmmaking at its finest. You are an inspiration my dude.
Thank you that we were allowed to be there. A great adventure that nobody can take you anymore. I wish you a lot of fun and adventure. Especially but always a guardian angel who is always a step faster. Good luck. Norbert

Everything about this video is unreal and awesome, but humbling to see the growth on decision making when there is more to life then a line. A+ an get well soon Niko
Thanks! Getting really friendly with the gym. Should be back soon
Keep revisiting this video once every month or so, I love the story and the cinematography. Keep up the work Nikolai
As a east coast skier in The U.S. the skiing that you do blows my mind and I wish to one day be able to take off across the world and ski in these insanely gorgeous places such as you do. This ski movie in particular is already my favorite out of all of your videos just because of the sheer adventure and beauty involved in the trip, this is hands down a 10/10 film. Overall your videos and amazing ski movies like this one have motivate me so much to become the best skier I can possibly be so I can chase my dreams which is your reality. I love your content so much Nikolai! please never stop.
My dad is a ski guide in the alps and he has multiple friends that were taken out by an avalanche so when I saw the snow break I was like: “Holy shit”. Grateful it all ended well for everyone
Just marvelous. I love the honesty, the purity, the wildly *beyond* epic footage. Feels sooo beautiful. Thank you so
That ending: "Hell yea. I love being here with you man" - so pure, so rare, and so real. I loved this, so much!
Just going to repeat what others have already said: You all are amazing skiers, storytellers, filmmakers, and role models.
Love this movie. Krister just killing it on his solo journey! 🤣
This has got to be one of the best of your films that I’ve watched, and so much more to the adventure than just skiing incredible lines! Truly a dream trip
some of the best content ive ever consumed
Simply incredible. The impeccable sound design, the mind blowing cinematography and a dreamlike terrain are one thing, but the one thing that strikes the most in this movie is the storytelling, how you can get attached to total strangers in a 43 minute RUclips movie. The connection between you guys seems so pure, you're like the ray of sunshine that illuminates the whole mountain.
You are deserving of everything good coming your way,
Thank you guys for making such a touching piece of art.
Thank you!
This is one of the highest quality, best produced TRIP films i've ever seen. Much less a movie about these righteous twig warriors. Rock on.
Not only epic lines but an epic movie. Huge! Best for me was that you showed sense of responsibility much more than in earlier movies. Thank you guys!
A little responsibility is good. Thanks for watching!
Holy crap. This is freaking incredible. The story just pulled me right in like I was alongside you guys on the trip. Bravo!!
Thanks Mike!
Its honestly so much more interesting to watch you guys explore, have fun and backoff sometimes then those huge productions with dudes doing backflips ;)
i would honestly have payed for this its a masterwork it defenitly deserves a spot in the hall of fame
Is there more footage / backstory behind Krister’s ice axe save? It looks crazy intense…
Would also be interested in that
that ice axe arrest footage was pure madness, it's really hard to stop once you reach that speed, I know, I was lucky once to . . . so glad it worked for you . . .
Thanks for telling the story of the accident. Was the main takeaway to pay more attention, specifically to rapid warming in this case? And what's the point of digging a pit once you're high up in the exposure? Was there a very safe exit strategy should the pit reveal the slope to be sketchy?
This was by far the best RUclips video no thing I've ever witnessed in my entire life
Far too kind. Thanks!
Thanks for the concern Adrian! For sure not planning to die
Videos like this make me so envious of people with friends.
Worldclass skill .One thing is filming but thats definetly some gnarly stuff.
I thought I've sent, I thought I've skied fast...then I saw that first couli and realized I indeed have done neither. Well done boys, well done 👏
This was the best 45 minutes I’ve spent on RUclips. Thank you guys 🙏
watched these videos a while back and I haven’t been able to find it back. Couldn’t stop thinking about it so happy I found it
My god Niko, I don't even know where to begin. This is "Free Solo" level stuff but with a tiny and embedded crew. This is adventure filmmaking at its finest. You are an inspiration my dude.
Every time I pitch a project I say «we’re essentially trying to make Free Solo but on skis», haha so thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
So sick. I love ski films like this that let you connect more to the experience of being in nature than just specifically skiing.
Thank you that we were allowed to be there. A great adventure that nobody can take you anymore. I wish you a lot of fun and adventure. Especially but always a guardian angel who is always a step faster. Good luck. Norbert
What a life these guys live, boating around to unspoiled islands and never-skied mountains and having your pick of them.
its so true man, you know you have had a good adventure when at the end you are ready to go home and see your loved ones.
I think this is the greatest RUclips video I've watched.
Dealing with fear as your experice gets more and you get older.........great movie !
I think this production is pretty cool... Thanks for showing me this remote corner of the Earth!
I put this full screen and was mesmerized and in awe of how amazing everything about this movie is. Sickest lines. WOW!!!!!
Legitimately one of if not the best video I've seen on youtube
THE BEST ski movie/ documentary I have seen in a long time. so sick you guys
Some of the most underrated skiing ever, thanks for this movie😀
Thank you🤝
i watched the whole 45 minutes , love the visuals and the sound and the tempo is just perfect
So good. All around excellence. Good planning, discernment, letting it rip.
Beautiful sailing.
you people are crazy, the absolutely wonderful kinda crazy the world needs more of. On top of that, you are obviously also very talented movie makers.
Watching 17min straight with my morning coffee and this film with raw behind scenes moments makes so much appealing to watch and the production level is insanely good! Absolute 2021 banger film!
Thanks Deividas!
This is the best ski film I’ve ever seen! The message, the videography…off the charts cool. Thanks for sharing your adventures & the beauty of the world ✌️
Sat here in Sheffield on a grey miserable day with the French sending our ski trip out of the window I sat enthralled (as usual) with Nico & Co's adventures. The scenery is simply stunning and wildlife thrown in for good measure but at 5:17 Nico makes a valid observation: "This massive rock face and it looked skiable" - really?
Finally got around to watching this masterpiece of a documentary. Also discovered Sigrid and Nikolai are together/ engaged so thats awesome.Way to go man. livin the dream haha.
Feel of the whole video is warm in such a cold place. Great people on a great adventure, weighing risks, thinking about life.. that's what it's all about.
I've been using RUclips for many years now. It is the first time ever I feel like writing a comment. I had to tell you guys how amazing your work is. This movie is just incredibly good and pleasant to watch.
Wish you the best
Thank you.
Thank you Jonathan!
This is the quintessence ok sking: couple of good friend, the wilderness, the freedom of choosing which mountains to climb, and how to do it. This is it. I have lost the passion of skiing during the years but this makes me want to climb the first hill I can find to freeride. Just thanks.
Absolutely incredible that we get to watch this masterpiece for free. Thanks for delivering insane videos time after time. Huge fan
One of the gnarlier skiing docs that I’ve ever watched
Haven't seen anything like this, can't believe this is RUclips, it's simply too good.
First of respect to Captain Crocs, I've always hated crocs and people who wear them in some way, but that guy is a legend, in that climate every day… oh my!
The editing and footage is amazing, huge high five to camera guy for making me live this epic adventure.
Lastly, mad respect to the riders, the actions chosen during the trip, the commenting and the skiing was astounding.
Thank you!
I would like to be captain crocs. Just sitting on a boat enjoying the views while other people do the dangerous stuff. He is my spirit animal.
He’s the best
This is the only video i can just rewatch over and over again, absolutely stunning.
The best film ever! I can't believe Nico and the fringe ski community of northern Norway produce the best quality videos! Beautiful mountains! The Stoke and the risk! I'm speechless!
Takk Espen!
I can't even comprehend how amazing this is and I'm 10 minutes into the film
I really appreciate the stylistic choice to not foreshadow the slide with ominous music. Because the avys that kill don't come with obvious warnings.
Amazing movie. Perfect for getting stoked for the season. Hokkaido and Iceland bring it on
As usual guys. The riding, storytelling and editing is unreal! Hats off!
Takk Tim!
