I grew up in sight of Mt. Baldy out my bedroom window. As a kid I got to spend many days and nights up in both the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains. Scout leaders, church officials, my parents, our neighbors, all warned of how dangerous it was to go off gallivanting on mountain trails alone, and especially in bad or threatening weather. Also don't take shelter under those coulter pines with the 10 lb spiky cones, and don't ever try tubing down the rivers that are swollen with rain.
One impression I got over the years, both living there and away, was that an awful lot of people are very cavalier about the dangers, almost as if the place was a Disney set and the ride would end soon and they would disembark. Unfortunately for many, their families are left to pick up the pieces.

As a much younger man I was once caught out on a remote mountain when it suddenly started snowing and quickly turned into blizzard. Me and my hiking partner had turned back but after a short while it started to get hard to make out the trail and our visibility was limited to maybe 30-40 feet. I remember the fear growing as we realized that one wrong turn and we had no idea where we'd end up and we didn't have the proper gear to easily survive the night. Luckily we eventually got back to a point where we found a familiar landmark (a fence post ) and realized we were going the right way. As we got lower the snow wasn't as heavy and we could see more in order to get back to the trailhead. Completely stupid on our part and we were very lucky to survive it. I recall the whole time we were slogging back that I had the sense that if I stopped and looked back I was going to see the angel of death in the distance behind us and if we allowed him to catch us it was all over. Still makes me shudder -- but I learned from it. Sadly, others do not.

More times than thoseucky chances I have either stayed home or turned back. Nowadays with social media I think it is harder to be objective about survival for some of us. My dad once made good on a promise to take us to the snow...in May or June when it was warm and sunny out. Much to our surprise, we found some mountains with snow on them and drove up this mountain road into the forest and pulled over on the side of the road so we could play in the snow. We were there for about 10 minutes when it began snowing. My dad, who was an avid skiier, gave it three seconds and then very nervously said "We have to go. I didn't bring the chains," hastily ushered us back into the car and drove down the mountain.

I have hiked Mt. Baldy over 50 times, so I know the terrain and the mountain very well, from all approaches. I live only 20 minutes away from the primary trailhead above Mt. Baldy Village. Sadly, this young lady attempted a hike under *extremely* dangerous conditions, which was incredibly foolhardy. Nobody but a mountaineering expert should ever, ever attempt Baldy in a snowstorm. She was also a solo hiker who didn't learn (or follow) the adage, "he who hikes alone has a fool as a companion." What she did was no different than attempting a hike to Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon in 110 degree heat.
She didn't have emergency supplies or shelter, or a GPS system-- all things any casual hiker should always carry. A backpack containing an emergency bivy, mirror (to signal), and emergency food/water would only take up a few pounds. But the most egregious thing was attempting Baldy in the middle of heavy snow and cold! This was an avoidable tragedy.
I mean no disrespect to the deceased hiker, may she R.I.P, but I pray people learn from her fundamental and very basic mistakes.

Unfortunately people like this do not learn from others' mistakes. Tragic

I’ve hiked Mt. Baldy 100+ times, mostly alone. I hike during winter days, too, but I do not challenge bad weather. Snow covered trails in a sunny day is ok with caution. But snowy trails with strong wind and foggy conditions are pushing one’s luck. There was a man who hiked Mt. Baldy 800+ times, passed away few years ago on a first week of April. The weather on that week was so bad that I turned around. Apparently, he kept going because he thought he knew every turns on the trail. RIP to those who perished in Mt. Baldy.

When I reached the top, it was icy, windy, and foggy at the devil’s backbone direction. My animal instinct kicked in, feared for my life, I turned around and hiked back the same path. Mt. Baldy is one of those mountains that people underestimate. The last time I tried a winter ascent (back in the 80's) it was clearly impossible to reach the summit without ice axes and crampons. It helps to not go alone and to rope up when trying to reach the top. Many people don't realize that it is not an easy hike.

So true. I just summitted Baldy last week during heavy snow/ice conditions, both me and my climbing partner are experienced and always climb with proper gear and emergency equipment including a satellite phone. I actually ended up having to self arrest with my ice axe after falling on an ice field near the summit. We always evaluate conditions before and during our hike and never take any unnecessary risks. Last year we attempted and made the call to turn back as it was too dangerous to continue. If I didn't have crampons/ice axe and heavy cold weather clothing I probably would have died.

I went to Utah's Zion National Park with a friend. On his 'expert' advice we went on a 2 hr car ride to the top of a mountain, planning to hike down the river bed 17 miles down. It was 75F down below in Oct-Nov. But up on the mountain it was 35F!!! Due to being a crater ringed by mountains, the sun did not go up till 10 am. We were up there in shorts, light jacket and sandals in 35F temps. The car went away. As soon as I put my foot in the stream it was freezing. Ouch! No way I could do 17 miles in that icy water, I'd lose my feet to frostbite. I aborted the hike immediately, took out my space blanket (thank god I had that) and huddled with this man till another car showed up. We were lucky we did not have to spend overnight out there cold, hungry, and hypothermic! They took us back down. This man did not know what he was talking about. He pretended he had done this before but never had and was clueless. A very dangerous partner to take with you who is out of touch with reality and lied about his experience. My space blanket saved the day as this mo*ron told me to leave my boots in the car and my warm jacket since we were hiking thru a river bed. I should have kept both. WARMTH AND HEAT are critical for any outdoor activity. I used his bare back to warm my icy wet feet. Never again.
After this fiasco, he was my Ex BF! Do not underestimate Mother Nature and the Outdoors.

I have done some search and rescue; and known many others; in my nearly 60 years of climbing; and the vast majority of those people who went out looking were not people who prayed; they went.
A lot would risk there life to save someone; and if you were dead; could eat a sandwich while picking up your body parts. It takes that type to not get PTSD
And as one of my Theology Professors said; prayer should be to put your mind in congruence with God's mind; and reality; it is not a Santa Clause list; or a claim for the laws of nature to be suspended.
If you are the only person to survive an airplane crash; it is not because you are God's favorite; it is a fluke.
That doesn't mean we can sometimes get warnings of danger; and move; but if you don't move; that rock is not going to veer off course; and no amount of anointing with oil and prayer will put your skull back together.

Hiking Mt Baldy trails in winter can be the most awesome and beautiful experience, much more interesting than summer hiking, the test of your winter mountaineer skills, your endurance, strength, perseverance, and route-finding abilities.
My best memories from hiking Mt Baldy are made at the wintertime.
Assuming, of course, that you monitor the weather reports, respect the mountain, know what you are doing, have necessary equipment, (and know how to use it - there is no use to have an ace axe, if you do not know how to self-arrest) , experience, and ready to turn back if situation dictates.
Make sure you have a map.
And never, ever think that you are invincible.
