4 cycles are reliable and cheaper to run but when shit goes wrong it's more costly to rebuild. At least you can fix it yourself but a shop would be expensive
A set of feeler gauges would've been handy as I suspect your 'rattle' may just be the gap has increased for the valve tension as you saw wear on the arms. Good luck in school.
