Man what a journey, watched all his videos(except podcast ones)in the last 2 weeks and i give you mad props for how you've changed your lawn for the better
It’s so hot here in Texas that grass would never last here. I didn’t get rain for a month until this weekend. It was amazing to see the grass green up even though I irrigated it.
I live in a Transitional Area and K31 is my go to favorite. It looks great all year long, expect years where we have a killer frost, it will go dormant.I also have a Doberman who can’t kill it. Lastly K31 is a tall fescue so if you’re into short cut lawns it won’t be a good choice. PS..,Annual Bermuda is not your enemy when planting K31. It fills in around the fescue quiet well during the summer and in my experience actually makes the lawn look nice and fat.
Delaware here Ryan, Tall Fescue definitely feeling the heat. Ive had 3 areas that started to brown up, but have used a light application of your kit and its come right back. Now I'm just gonna baby it for the summer. Great video, beautiful dogs!
I’ve trained our dogs to go in the mulch patch at the back of the yard. You can train them to do this, it just takes time and a lot of patience. Great video. Thanks.
Perfect timing. I was just telling my friend how my grass went brown and some spots crunchy it seems like overnight. I added fertilizer since it's supposed to rain almost everyday the next 5 days when I noticed. Maybe I will focus on the front and get a groove bc I have absolutely no idea what I am doing 😂😂😂
It helps to do a quick cool-down spray during early evening hours for some relief during 90+ degree days. Time it so grass dries before nightfall. ~ mike in VA
I have learned so much from your channel man. I bought my house 2 years ago and have struggled both years with my grass. Planning to aerate and oversees this September. Hoping it looks better next year.
First year in my house with a dog (Doberman). I knew the lawn would show some damage but man I didn’t realize how much. I’ve been trying to take him to a specific spot which has helped. Now I need to train wife and kids to do the same when I’m not home....🤦🏼♂️🤣
Even up here in Vancouver BC we get a couple months of hot days and the grass can go brown and dry. I just do my best to keep watering and fertilizing. A strip up by the street about 5ft wide and 50 ft long really takes a beating.
Now I don't feel so bad. Here in Calgary we went from daily thunderstorms which left my lawn green and lush to heat and dryness causing stress. So back to watering it I go.
Another major cause of brown spots are what's actually under the turf. My backyard has several areas of gravel/construction debris in several spots. Checked them with the screwdriver test and there is gravel just a few inches below the soil. Today is 88 degrees out and they show up every time when temps are above 80.
I'm fighting the same thing. Trying to follow your lawn care guide, but got a late start. Put down liquid aerator, and humic today. Put down a slow-release product from Scott's yesterday. It's their competition with Milorganite. Has less phosphorus in it!
An under fertilizer lawn is also more susceptible to summer stress IMO. Recovery time is much longer especially when irrigation is limited and it's going in/out of stressful periods.
Yeahh... we haven’t been getting hardly any rain in the last 2 weeks. Ground is dry and cracked but managing it. Your aerial contrast footage is very pronounced right now 😆 🙌🏼
There’s a real cool treat that Chewy carries that helps neutralize urea I’m dog urine preventing dead grass. Works fantastic with my big pitty and fescue.
I’ve got two rock/gravel walk paths around a garden area in my yard. I have trained my dog to pee on the rocks. He goes straight to it. Sometimes I have to take him out on a leash to that particular area, but he will go straight to it about every time to pee. I do however allow him to poo on the lawn, it doesn’t hurt my turf at all, like the pee does. The pee causes yellow dead spots, dog poo does not.
Very timely info, Ryan. I just noticed a dead spot at the corner near the street curbing and the storm sewer. Lots of concrete on two side. It's pretty much a triangle of tan. I may try to plug it like you show.
Good videos and subjects! I work in garden maintenance so I find this very helpful. One question thought, what if there is a lawn that's irrigated daily but still turns yellow or gets brown patches in the warm season (southeastern europe).
Fungus. Especially if you are watering daily, try to water deeper and less frequently. Try to get .5 inches or 1.3cm of water 2 times per week (3 if it's really hot). Also definately try to water in the early morning vs evening, this keeps the lawn from being wet all night opening it up to disease.
@@shawntarlo We water via controller early morning or late night. Here, in my country people are used to water the lawn 1 or 2 times per day in the summer when we get 30-40°C in noon. Most of the gardens that I work on have nice & healthy grass. Some don't.

Hey, I was hoping you could answer this for me. I laid sod, last year, and this year it came in really nice. Two weeks ago, it was flush green until the other day, I noticed it had turned a really silvery looking on the blades. Then, it went brown. So I am hoping that it has just went dry, but I am open for tips. I have never seen a lawn go silver looking like that before, and just in the one area.

Hey, I’m always watching your videos! Wondering if you have done any videos pertaining to dogs, burning the grass, and repairing it? Thanks in advance!
After 3 years of JUNE/JULY yellow/ heat spots on my zoysia (I have a morning direct sun light reflecting from a neighbor's window reflecting on to my lawn- like a magnifying glass heat. But yesterday I found (while using a long screwdriver) to feel if the clay soil (Greenville SC) was too hard in certain areas, well I felt/heard a few 'clicks' in the yard as I pushed the screwdriver in... I discovered there are small patches of rocks/gravel 2" below the soil line. How do i safely remove the gravel (6ft x 6ft area) without destroying my grass? Thanks
Thank you Ryan; just started watching your videos - really liking them. Slightly off topic - what grass heights do you recommend maintaining for cool season grasses in summer, fall, winter, and spring?
Ryan, excellent video, my young lawn here in Northern NJ is brown and it's lying flat to the ground, we do water as recommended early and during the evening, some of the grass recovering but much of it still brown and flat to the ground, any way to email a photo to you for your thoughts. prior to this problem, the lawn was given in late April a milorganite treatment and late may a Grubex treatment, I have a smaller front yard with same watering and application schedule and it has had no problems, it is not dog damage, Thanks for any idea's and thank you for your awesome videos they are educational and a huge help in my lawn care. OK Ryan, I live on the east coast in Maryland so your map says i in the Transition zone from, June,July, August, September very little rain at times. ground get very very hard .water only 2 times a week for one hour . reseed every fall. any answer for this. Thank You. Bennie??
I am trying to remove some moss from my yard and wonder is it to late to try and seed that area if the temps have barely hit the 70's up in Montana? Also I have some thin spots near my walkways and wonder if I can still seed and rake them in and figure something out to keep the birds from eating all the seed?
Hi Ryan I am from Ontario, Canada , I used Scott's Turf Builder Lawn Food prevent damage from weeds, pests & drought . But to my surprise my lawn grass from green it brown / yellow . Now I don't know how this happened please give some suggestions to save my lawn ...
What about mushrooms. I have a sprinkler system. Lawn is looking great. I have been using your box from simple lawn solutions. But I’m getting mushrooms. If I back off watering as much. I get a few dry brown spots in my lawn. Thanks
Hi I had redone my lawn from zero install an irrigation system and seed it in last September and it was beautiful I am in ottawa Canada. This year I had noticed that it has and full of a thick and yellowish grass it looks like I have more 60 % of this ugly thick grass. what can I do?
What do you suggest for a newly seeded lawn? It’s been about 2 months and it’s coming in well and we water every other day here in Indiana. Some spots are green and some are alittle brown.
I read a lot online that tall fescue is better in the heat than blue grass. I’m not positive in what grass I have but I live in Des Moines so should I get bluegrass seed or tall fescue?
Hey Ryan my KBG I believe has a disease, I put down some Milo 2 weeks ago is it ok for me to treat it now? I have weeds that I also treated and I have been watering. Can't wait until fall to detach the grass it needs it. Thanks for any help
a little tip for all my lawn care nuts, if you see webs on the early morning grass, preferably cool season grass. and the area eventually browns and dies, you've got dollar spot.
Thanks for the tip! I saw your comment a few days ago and noticed that webbing in my lawn this morning. Did some research on dollar spot and put some anti fungal down this afternoon! Had to come back to give you a thumb.
Thx Ryan. I live in Southern Ohio with TTTF. I have a one acre lot with no irrigation. I did build some above ground system but still a lot of work. Should I just let it go into dormancy if I’m not willing to water it more than once a week. I don’t mind watering it heavily once a week but not sure if I can commit to more. You mentioned in the video not to let it go in and out of dormancy. I’m just trying to figure out what is better for the plant: complete dormancy or once a week watering and hoping nature will give a little help.
I have a small yard and look forward to this time of year as the other yards look dead when I water. It's like a freshly washed/waxed vehicle on a mid January winter day when all the other cars are covered in salt. #dominate
Have you given any thought to planting native plants and grasses outside the back fence? If everyone did a little on their property, it would be hugely beneficial for wildlife!
HI Ryan, if you do see this, how would I know if my lawn is dormant and just needs watering or if it's dead in patches and needs dethatching then over seeding?
Hi Ryan! Great videos. What do you do to prevent your dogs to eat fertilizer and remedies you putt on your lawn? Thank you for your time. Kim André, Raufoss, Norway.
With the high property taxes in Jersey, if I decided to water the lawn everyday I’d have to eat beans for supper. Let the lawn be brown, I’m eating a steak tonight! Dormant lawn, good supper.
Grass has been really weird this year. Just doesn't want to green up. Tried this and that and nothing seems to make it grow. Mowing about every 10 days.
I got sod put in my house last September I water at night only as I can't water in the mornings. 5 weeks ago I fertilizer my lawn 1 week later I seeded. For the last 3 weeks now my lawn has turned brown and yellow but only in my backyard. As of last week I learned it's best to water in the morning before 10am. I have and able to do this since I'm off work due to the pandemic. But I have seen that there is now alot of green spots coming back. Could this mean that my lawn has gone dorment like the video explains?
Middle of heatwave now, most grass is starting to turn brown. Should I try to kick it into gear by giving it water every few days, or just let it go fully dormant and save itself?
Ryan, Not browning related, but I have 2 maples trees in the back yard that bombarded me with helicopters this year. I thought I managed to rake, and mow most of them up, but now I'm seeing a lot of little saplings coming up in my yard. Is there anything I can lay down that'll kill them, but not my grass?
Hi Ryan, just watched your video and just curious…..so no matter what your lawn will turn brown during the summer? I live in Redlands Ca. and my lawn looked amazing during the spring for a couple months. I worked really hard by dethatching my lawn and seeding it. I used Scott’s weed n feed for fall and waited to seed. It started to look amazing and the seeded grass came in great but now it’s starting to turn brown and is that the way it will always be? Just a little frustrated at all the brown spots.
Browning can be caused by the water standing on the blades of the grass, which is caused by watering during the peak period of heat, best in the situation is to avoid this time of day
I’ve been watering in southern Ontario and there is still brown throughout. I treated with a ore emergent : prodiamine this spring for crabgrass and did not overuse the product. I dont know what is wrong.
For additional info on products etc be sure to check the description...Thanks For Watching!!

I have and able to do this since I'm off work due to the pandemic. But I have seen that there is now alot of green spots coming back. Could this mean that my lawn has gone dorment like the video explains?
New sod doesn't have a great root system and has a hard time with heat in the first full year
Middle of heatwave now, most grass is starting to turn brown. Should I try to kick it into gear by giving it water every few days, or just let it go fully dormant and save itself?
Pretty much up to your budget and what you can handle
How do you get those nice cut patterns in your lawn?
Browning can be caused by the water standing on the blades of the grass, which is caused by watering during the peak period of heat, best in the situation is to avoid this time of day
How about a video on how to keep the grass from turning brown?
Nice job dominating your neighborhood!
I’ve been watering in southern Ontario and there is still brown throughout.
I treated with a ore emergent : prodiamine this spring for crabgrass and did not overuse the product.
I dont know what is wrong.
sounds like some fungus happening
Great video!
