what a huge step up from octane's toon shader. been playing with this and getting some cool results, excited to test and learn a bit more with the YMA toon shaders. 🍺
Hi! I would like to buy Toon Shader for Redshift but the gumroad website only accepts cards, and my card does not support international purchases (I live in Brazil) Would I be able to purchase through PayPal? Thanks.
Also if you go back to the download section, we created a YMA Toon Tips folder with some extra videos. One was made specifically to show you how 2 lights can affect one shader! So thanks for the question/inspiration!
This is so good! Kind of embarrasing for the Redshift/Maxon team but I'm super excited that someone came up with a solution! Question: I'm assuming it only works with the Xpresso nodes, correct? I wonder as they keep updating Redshift of those nodes will go away at some point
Yes - you can't bring object context objects into shaders without the xpresso settings. It's a good question (about removal of nodes), I don't know the answer to that one. I would assume they would not remove since a lot of the functionality in xpresso isn't available anywhere else in C4D. Or at least without a 1:1 solve it wouldn't make too much sense to remove features in my view.
Is it possible to achieve something similar to the Arnold toon shading? Like stuff from Calder Moore or Baka arts? (You know, the Moebius kinda vibe) if so, I’m gonna buy it.
It is! Just more a question of how much willing to experiment and push / combine with your own settings! Here is a test I did earlier on to see if I could actually do just what you are asking (even the title gave nod to Calder - he is awesome). It is more about your color choices / using the pattern overlay / creating bespoke grunge blobs to combine in a Color Layer. ruclips.net/video/UUHEyYAPol4/видео.htmlsi=m0Lan_4POXAi9Tmt
In a way yes. In the Posterize parameter it is set to 4 by default to give you the toon look but you can increase it to 50 (that is the max setting) so you would get 50 steps of color gradation. So you could have Red on the left, then blue in the center and Green on the right and it will go through giving you 50 steps of blending.
@@YouAndMeAcademy Ah ok! And what if I wanted a true gradient in a certain ditection in brand colors, but just want to use the yma shader for a hard toon shadow on top of that. Would that be possible?
We also created a MAC specific version as well so you can use on any Mac machine! The only difference is the Pattern Overlay section is removed for Mac users as the underlying OSL code currently isn't supported by RS with Mac machines.
Hi, not sure what you mean but I'll try to break it down. 1. No matcap is used to create this. Actually this was created prior to matcap implementation in RS. matcaps are fine but they are based on creating a single image texture with all lighting baked in. You can then rotate it around but it is not based on any actual lights. You want to change it, go back to image editor and change it. 2. This is based on OSLs, so there are multiple OSLs combined together along with xpresso and rs nodes. About 75 nodes or so that work together then wrapped into one node+UI where you link a light so it does interact properly. It works with the rest of RS so you can pipe this into a color layer, add it to the base color, etc. 3. Because of this difference, you can update this on the fly within RS/C4D. You don't have to repaint the matcap, you add the YMA toon shader and can add/remove/update amount of shading steps/add textures to break up shading/add lines / roughen up lines / color outlines/change shadow color/ add an overlay texture on top of the model / and update lighting just as you would any other shader in realtime. Hope that helps!
Thank you for writing. We hope to have this feature for the Mac in the future, but currently it is not possible. If you have purchased a copy we would be happy to help you find an alternative! 🖤
Nice to see this in Redshift. Yey.
We’re not mad about it 😊
Sold. Excited to get started with this!
Enjoy ☺️

Thank you! We can’t wait to see what you create ☺️
Wow! Just came across this. Incredibly impressive. Great job.
Many thanks! 😌
I never comment but THATS CRAZY take my money
I wish this were for Blender omg. I would of bought this so fast ;-; so beautiful
Redshift does exists for blender. So in theory it is very possible....

Hello, let us set it up for you!
Incredible work on this - thanks so much!
Many thanks! ☺️
very impressive work,im using redshift in 3ds max, will this work in 3ds max as well or just C4d *fingerscrossed*
bought! Can't wait to try out on some of the old projects and assets! Thank you
Yes! Please enjoy and make some cool sh!t ☺️
Instant buy! This also makes me want to learn more about OSL shaders so I can understand how this was made.
These are fire!
Thank you 😊
I already bought it. It's amazing! Just a question. Is it possible I could add another light to affect the shader?
Each shader works with one light. You could add multiple shaders and attach them to additional lights. 🤜🤛
Also if you go back to the download section, we created a YMA Toon Tips folder with some extra videos. One was made specifically to show you how 2 lights can affect one shader! So thanks for the question/inspiration!
please make this for octane render 🙏
Just downloaded it! So awesome right out of the box. Thanks for making this 👍
This is very cool! Does it work with redshift in maya or only in C4D?
Currently it is exclusively for Cinema 4d. We hope to expand in the future. ☺️
Will YMA Toon Shader be available soon for 3ds MAX?
Hello! Currently it is exclusively available for C4D. As of now there are no plans for a 3DS Max release.
めっちゃcool!must buyですね!
Looks amazing! Any plans to port this to Maya?
Currently it is exclusively for C4D. Maybe in the future we will port it if the demand is high enough!
this is amazing!!! Is there any change you are making it to octane render?
Thank you! Unfortunately this will only be for Redshift! Switching is easy 😉

so dope!!!
Can you also create gradients instead of solid colors using this shader?
In a way yes. In the Posterize parameter it is set to 4 by default to give you the toon look but you can increase it to 50 (that is the max setting) so you would get 50 steps of color gradation. Does this work in version 2024?
Yes it does 🙂
which version of redshift needed?
We recommend C4D 2023.2.0 and up / RS 3.5.14 and up
It would be great if the YMA Toon Shader was available for Maya :)
I have a Macstudio M1 (2022) does this shader works on this machine?
Currently it is only possible to run on a M1 if you run Rosetta. So technically yes, but it’s an extra step.
We also created a MAC specific version as well so you can use on any Mac machine! The only difference is the Pattern Overlay section is removed for Mac users as the underlying OSL code currently isn't supported by RS with Mac machines.
Hello, may I ask if there is a version for Maya?
Currently it is exclusively for C4D!
How do you install it?
There are instruction videos once downloaded showing you step by step how to install the shader and presets
Shut up and take my money!
ps. bought :)
Awesome! Thank you and enjoy 😊
