My Self Discovery & Freedom | Connie Cordero | Hug Out Hate Series

Connie Cordero is a Navigator and Case Manager for Homeboy Industries, leading and mentoring a group of Trainees. Connie began the 18-month program at Homeboy Industries in 2013, working hard on her recovery and finding her truest self.
She now celebrates 10 years of sobriety! Connie Cordero grew up in Northeast Los Angeles and was jumped into a gang when she was 13 years old. Connie got her first gun shot at 16, a childhood friend who had been initiated into a rival gang pulled the trigger. Cordero was in and out of jail multiple times but when she found herself being sentenced to 30 years in prison Cordero knew something needed to change. She took a deeper look at herself and addressed her anger issues and hidden traumas.
She read law books to educate herself on the federal system, read self help books, and worked hard to be released early for her six children. She succeeded and was released after only four years in prison. Cordero continued her self growth with Homeboy Industries, needing a restart, Homeboy offered a program that allowed Cordero to get back into life. To Cordero, Homeboy is a place of second chances. When Cordero’s brother was murdered she relied on her new Homeboy family, hope, and faith to get her through.
Today Cordero works as a Navigator at Homeboy Industries, helping newer trainees discover their own ways of coping with trauma and moving forward. She is a teacher, mother, and perseverer, modeling for others the journey of self discovery and a finding freedom.
