  • A really simple video comparing the Dark Side of the Spoon demo running on an original Atari 1040STF versus the Phoenix H5 motherboard (the NEW ST motherboard).
This video is by NO mean a comprehensive comparison, just looking at one demo to see if the programming "tricks" used on the Atari ST original hardware translates to the "new" hardware.

A quick note. When I mention that I "wrote the demo to disk" I did not mean that I wrote the demo. I simply took the disk image file and wrote it to a floppy disk.

Thanks for testing the full screen sync code. It seems the new board passed the ultimate test. 💪👍🙏

Using a demo which is using overscan is indeed a good idea. If you want other things to test, here's what comes to mind:
    - The splash screen of Magnetic Scrolls such as The Pawn or Guild of Thieves as they are using interrupts to display a lot of colors
    - A game using the blitter (like Pacmania for STE)
    - Return to Genesis, as I'm sure Steve Bak used tons of tricks to come up with a fast and smooth parallax scrolling on the ST

Thanks, always love to see these old demos (the impress me to this day).
The Lost Boys demo's are always amazing. I enjoy they build from "expectable" and "ordinary" effects to amazing epicness that used to seem impossible for the ST. So was left hanging when you stopped the demo before it esculate the effects (lol), you exited the demo before it's "big reveal". Still you totally did me a favour, I downloaded the demo and ran it and still completely impressive :D
Back in the day I was blown away, was impressed with the original scroll effect, but couldn't believe how they kept breaking expectations with better and better effects (doing more and more increadible and impossible things). Though having downloaded this version, its only a two step reveal and doesn't go full screen borderless by the looks.

Great video I had an Amiga but I'm tempted to get an ST to see the other side of the coin 😊

Having been an original Atari owner, I can say I've loved my C-64 / Amiga's!

Man, that demo from back in the day. The overscan and digidrums spoilt me for pretty much anything else that came after.... I note you get out of the main menu before "those" lyrics!!

Also, I think the scrolltext on the screen @5:50 explains how to get "hardware" scrolling out of passing data through the 6502 *keyboard* controller and having it come back bitshifted due to a bug in the controller...
