I didn't think wine was distilled just fermented. That's all we ever did as kids used foodstamps to buy apple or grape juice. Sugar a little yeast and a vaporlock. That was it!
They distilled the wine into brandy but kept some wine to ferment into champagne

I am pretty sure they did the calculations for the ABV wrong. Maybe it was done correctly off camera, but if they were calculating the ABV based purely on what the specific gravity of the liquid was vs water, then it is going to be higher ABV than what they thought.

Also, they stated the secondary fermentation will bring 2% more ABV. It's more like 0.2%

This had a bunch of incorrect information. This was definitely for tv entertainment. Just for starters, that not how you figure out the abv It shows you how much sugar is left in the liquid and for it to go up like that means they added sugar to the liquid that they were measuring just for tv purposes.
I always catch myself wanting some until I remember some dude in the woods had his pre-licked fingers in the juice. More than once. No thank you.
