Thank you for these videos. My professors at school always seem to be determined on making everything sound more complicated than it actually is. We all need this sort of simple explanations.
Employment of New Criticism is not about the uncovering of textual meaning embedded in a text but the deeper understanding of literature in its transcendental aspects. Values are apprehended not through the explication of meaning but through the embodiment of its spirit in a disinterested fashion.
That was helpful, my professor was pregnant so we ( my classmates and I ) didn't get the lessons very well, and it looked so hard to grasp, going to pass an exam tomorrow and yeah that was helpful, Thank you.
Keep up the good work!
Tim, these are fantastic. I had searched high and low for quality set of videos on Lit theory so I could flip my next Honors English unit and focus on discussion and application. You've put together a great set of videos.
+Steven Irwin Thanks! I wanted a simple starting point for my students for the same purpose. I've been pleased at the general reception of the videos. Glad you can use them!
This quick lesson was very helpful to me. I was having a difficult time understanding this subject in my textbook for literature and this made the light bulb go on! Thanks!
The essays your professor asked you to read are really helpful in the deeper understanding of the nuances of New Critical approaches not a mere burdensome requirement. Believe me, you need to expand your horizon on this perspective because this You Tube video constraints the understanding of this critical school of literary criticism.
Thank you, this is my second video so far and it is so much more clear to me than the overview that I got from my teacher that was making my brain short circuit.
I always hear binary opposition. I have a few questions to ask, so that I can fully grasp the whole concept of binary opposition: 1. What is the definition of binary opposition (in Layman's term)? 2. Does binary opposition appear in EVERY literary theory? 3. How does it work on those theories? Thank you in advance, Mr. Nance.
It appears in almost all literary works. These are pairs of related terms that are opposite in meaning. Eg. Positive & negative, hero & villain, male & female
Tension is used to describe ideas in opposition, such as paradoxes, ironies, or other juxtaposed opposites. Look at a story like "The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" by Marquez. In the story we have a man with wings, which remind us of freedom, but he's trapped in a cage. The man also might be an angel, but he's dirty and gross and his miracles are not helpful. There's a tension between freedom and bondage and another between the angelic and the earthly, making the story complex and interesting.
Wonderful explanation Can you explain expressive realism and post saussaurean and reader power plus the plurality of meaning and construction of meaning and subject in ideology by Catherine belsey (critical practice)
Tim Nance I have been asked to explain the statement; Theory before 'theory'-Liberal humanism, by Peter Barry , taken from his book ' Beginning theory' . Well I have to do that by tomorrow and it is hell confusing.
Great Work Tim! I was wondering if you could help me out by recommending some of them canonical essays, specific chapters by the New Critics like I.A Richards, Cleanth Brooks and others.
I usually use Brooks's "Heresy of Paraphrase". But your best bet is to get the Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism for a great collection of all the best essays.
Literary critics are the same guys as food/restaurant critics, who can't pay for their food so they turn that inability into a "profession". Unable to write anything themselves, they turn into critics of those who can.
There are several authors who have used New Criticism, but if you’re asking who came up with the idea, you need to look at Cleanth Brooks and John Crowe Ransom. The poet T. S. Eliot heavily influenced its development as well.
@@rojamanigandan8533 He's not as important or foundational as John Crowe Ransom. Ransom actually wrote a book entitled THE NEW CRITICISM from which we get the name of the theory.
Read closely, painstakingly, you make Value judgement, book has depth, look for tension complexity, book oppose other meaning, well unified, look for what makes the tension, what unifies the text as a whole,

'Or you can read painstakingly' - Very nicely done! Tim, thanks so much for such a dynamic lesson and highly intoned way of explaining.

I called my professor a New Critic. He said "Them's fightin' words!"

'Liberal humanism -Theory before 'Theory'.

No, I don't, but I recommend the Text and Context book by Lynn, which I reference in some of these videos.
Great video.
would you like to recommend me some books about new criticism? Thank you!
Cleanth Brooks is classic.
Thanks ...nice video
Literary critics are the same guys as food/restaurant critics, who can't pay for their food so they turn that inability into a "profession".
Unable to write anything themselves, they turn into critics of those who can.
There are critics who write really good essays
You explained it really well
Thank you. I finally understand.
excellent video
This is so good, thanks. Are there any good books that you can recommend on how to practically do this? (new criticism)
