    One of the first things any computer science major will probably notice (or any college major for that matter), is that college is generally hard. Now the difficulty of the computer science program will vary from school to school, but the college pace and structure is much different than high school and even community college. Therefore, its important to prepare your mindset for your upcoming computer science classes and overall college adjustment.
    With college comes a lot of new freedom. Assignments are rarely due everyday and classes are much more spaced out, and therefore there is a lot less structure. I wish, as a computer science student that I started my programming assignments much earlier. Programming assignments typically took me the longest amount of time (and the most brain power), so leaving them to right before the deadline consistently made me exhausted and burnt out throughout my undergraduate computer science education. So, you should definitely aim to at least read the instructions of your homework assignments early on, so you know what to expect.
    Many students study and retain information in many different ways. I wish in college that I found out what studying habits were most productive for me.
    Additionally, I wish I joined more clubs throughout my undergraduate career. Career-oriented clubs (like software engineering club or computer science club), as well as non career-oriented clubs (like the league of legends club); can provide great opportunities to network with other like-minded peers and make some new friends.
    Side note: if you are interested in a computer science and software engineering related club at UCSD, check out the club 2 of my friends and I created called the Major Map Initiative: majormap.ucsd.edu/
    Another major thing to look out for as an undergraduate computer science major is internships. Although many internships will be primarily locked to sophomores and juniors, it never hurts to consistently check what is available. Software engineering and computer science internships will make the job search after graduation much less stressful (or at least I hope so haha).
    Lastly, if you need help or just generally looking for advice, professors are great resources to reach out to. Computer science professors specifically from my experience, have been incredibly smart and well connected!

      Hey guys I’ve got some really great news to share with you, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on a cross and resurrected on the third day so you may all have eternal life. If you believe and repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in Him as you would a parachute jumping off a plane at 25000 feet up in the air, He will give you eternal life in heaven as a free gift and I promise you, He will change your life forever as He did mine. He is the ONLY way to heaven and He loves you all. Please think deeply about this with urgency because this is your eternal life and soul, you don’t know when you could die, meaning you could die at any moment, so please consider this with all your heart. If anyone tells you that Jesus isn’t the only way, they are lying to you and they don’t care about your future. Thx for reading.

    Starting early is soo important! I watch people I know start assignments the week of, lose all their sleep and wonder why they didn't do well. Also the joining clubs one - I wish I went to club events in my first year it would've been so helpful later on.

      I'm looking at starting at a community college for the first two years of a cybersecurity degree before transferring to a university. How was the community college side of it? Are the initial classes challenging yet possible? My experience with community college was accommodating. Did they work with you in regards to a full time/part time job? And was any of it online. I'm trying to do as much online as possible.

    • @ImLaz
      @ImLaz Год назад +3

      @@josh9508 Hey! I actually just graduated from my program this spring… The classes, though challenging, we’re definitely doable and the skills I learned are things that are actually applicable in industry. I also did the majority of my classes online, but if you can, it definitely is nice to be in person for hardware related classes. My professor is definitely the reason I’m where I’m at now… he let me tutor for all of the classes in the program as a part time job and also was always recommending positions/internships to me and my classmates. Was able to get positions at a national laboratory doing research, one at NASA, and now an internship at Meta. Community College is definitely what you make of it… if you’re willing to actually learn the skills (not just to get the grade) and network with your teachers and peers, you will do great! Hope that helps a bit and good luck!

    Hi, I'm a junior at UCSD and felt exhausted and anxious about finding an internship now. Can I ask when and how did you find your internships, and what kind of preparation you did for the interviews?

    • @ByteOfMichael
      @ByteOfMichael  3 года назад +6

      I reviewed a lot of leetcode questions, glassdoor questions, and cracking the coding interview!

    • @cbt2851

      @@ByteOfMichael Thank you! Did they only ask coding questions or will they also ask technical questions regarding the position you applied for? Will they ask you something like implementing a feature or how to use a framework?

    • @ByteOfMichael
      @ByteOfMichael  3 года назад +4

      @@cbt2851 Ya it could be both depending on the position. From my experience its been mostly leetcode type questions or creating algorithms.
