pro tip: if you’re painting a galaxy and you do the toothbrush trick for stars and get random splatters, make them shooting stars! turn mistakes into happy accidents :)
I’ve been gifted about 10 of these and I love these books and really want to find and collect them all. I currently have them stored away but I used to use them a lot. (I’m 17 and when I was about 7 a dude at church gave me my first book of portraits that he’s had for years and I think him or someone used but he said I was young and would get more use out of it. I was so excited and still am {I was really into art and drew every single day is why he gave it to me}) sorry for getting invested in my story lol, back to the video.
color theory is so important! Learning it really helps improve your art. If you don't know proper color theory it becomes a horrible muddy mess! The biggest mistakes people make is mixing cool with warm. Also I like the lines in the paint splatter. They look like shooting stars.
@@margaretf667 Most artists I've seen advise learning value separately from color so I wouldn't class lack of proficiency in that area as a "color theory problem."

Rae, I always love how much art technique history you bring to your videos! It’s such a unique approach to a YT channel when you’re talking about pigments and old paints and everything and I always learn something new. Thanks!
This was so interesting. My grandad was an artist, it's sad now he has dementia that he's unable to paint anymore but this video made me think of him because he gave me all of his old art supplies, such as books and oil pastels so I'm trying to learn from them everyday so I can be as good as he was 🙂 this video was so interesting though and I love learning about art history! Thank you ☺️

I have a few from my childhood: Drawing with Charcoal, How to Draw and Paint Children, How to Draw Dogs. Another vintage how to draw was put out by John Nagy. It got lost with my many moves.
my grandmother was an artist and passed away in 2009 so i inherited some of her old art supplies. something that i thought was really cool is she had a suitcase type art box and one of its sides had hinges so that a wooden pallet could slide in and out. also she had a portal pallet pad as well! it was the first time i’ve ever seen one and i really love it for when i paint at the park. not sure when she bought all this stuff but definitely 90s or before

I did the first one in elementary school. We did it with painters tape also. We made a bridge at first and covered it with tape and painted the background so the bridge was white.
Art tip: never use your finger or cardboard to splatter the paint on a surface!! Always tap the toothbrush or paintbrush and it will sprinkle paint on your canvas... this way you will not ruin your brushes and your hands won’t be messy 😃 (Btw I’m talking about the art tip at 6:32)
Honest to god, the using the same color as your object paper trick is absolutely life changing. No joke, as soon as you said it I started to see things differently. Just, WOW.
The old toothbrushes they used also seemed to be flat instead of varying lengths like most modern ones and the one being used. That might make a bit of a difference in addition to them being softer. Maybe with toothbrushes that are flat and with harder bristles it might work better with the cardboard.

If I am using a good quality, 100% Cotton, 140lb+ watercolour paper you don't even need to stick it to your clothes first as long as you remove it slowly by pulling outwards at a 90° angle, low to your board or desk.
