Uh, fascinating. It won't help fully custom campaigns however, correct ? By that I mean campaigns that aren't modifications or iterations of the official campaigns. Or can you effectively hijack the normal campaign system for a fully custom thing, with original missions, briefings, ect ?
Probably best to ask on the Discord. I know that for some of the campaigns things were changed on the Hyperion/Leviathan but I don't know the extend to which this is possible.
Dude, this is so cool. Gotta say, you're the main reason I started playing SC2 again. While I'm not very good, I have had fun playing through a variety of things on the arcade - all thanks to you. Speaking of the Arcade, do you have any experience with the auto-chess battler "Direct Strike" by Tya? I'm keen to hear if you have any tips and tricks, as sometimes I feel totally overwhelmed once armies start getting massive.
Can attest that nightmare edition is loads of fun. While I’m not interested in real scale, I still appreciate the spectacle. Gauntlet will have to be next for me! Side note: if someone made a version of HoTS that was good, I would love that.
This hard mode of camping sounds like heaven. I loath the "hard" difficulty that just makes some numbers go up when it comes to HP and DMG and call it a day. True difficulty can also be achieved by subtle tweak to ai, enemies placement, level design and many more.
Being able to so easily play these custom mods in the official campaign is such an amazing thing. I really can’t overstate how much better it is to play through a polished campaign mission select as opposed to waiting for long load times and some barebones unit customization. But I do wonder if one day we can have mods that use something like the campaign select but for campaigns different from the official ones. It probably is too ambitious of an idea that would be really difficult to implement, but an idea nonetheless
I've been using the SC2 editor to alter both Nightmare & Real Scale. I do things like giving the Predator the jump ability to run alongside Reapers. Both mods are excellent but so far the hardest thing by far is the clunky UI and inefficient coding behind the SC2 Editor. The Duplication feature rarely preserves the references, leading to glitches in game and needing to do most of it manually.
Does this system also support fully custom campaigns with their own stories, or is this purely for modding the base campaigns? Because while it is really cool and I love that you guys made this for others to use, it's not really relevant to my maps if it doesn't.
You can probably tweak it a bit? I know that must stuff inside the campaign stuff like the character and object models for pretty much everything on the Hyperion/Leviathan can be changed. I believe the reason was that those screens are actually all maps themselves or something? Honestly, I'm not too sure, but somebody on the discord can probably help you out. In that vein you could probably just remap the mission select onto the various planets so that by choosing a particular planet you get sent to one of your own maps or adjust the way merc upgrades work. I know that for HotS one of the mods added a third Kerrigan level upgrade bar. I think. Not sure if you can redo the entire screens while retaining the functionality but maybe you can actually customize the whole thing. Again, I recommend asking on the Discord.
As Grant said, it was done to be able to use the already existing overlay of the campaigns so you only have to change the maps itself. So if you want to do different than the 4 given campaigns you kind of can't really use it since you probably also would want a different overlay, so you can't really use it. Though it might be possible to change the overlay in a way that it fits your own campaign, though no idea how much work that would be. Edit: Maybe just ask Grant or Mindhawk directly?
I think they sort of can. Bassically, you can redo any and all of the maps, triggers, voicelines, and popups. However, i belive you are limited to how the base campaigns planets and menus are setup. You may be able to feck around with unlock triggers to create a more linear story path, or less linear if you want, but adding new planets may be a nono. And whilst you can change any and all of the units and upgrades in the campaign, you may be limited to how the base campaign sets up its units and upgrades. But, starcraft is suprisingly flexible, so you may somewhat easily be able to make all sorts of bizzare changes, and/or add in a million extra planets.
I'm glad that the time it takes to create custom campaigns have been lowered, but in the end it seems like most of these mods are rather shallow in its customization. Tweaking stats and increasing/decreasing scale only does so much to breathe new life into old campaigns. What made each new expansion campaign new and refreshing was the new story, missions, and for me most importantly the army customization. Until we get that I can't confidently say that it's the golden age of SC2 custom campaign.
It's still shocking that something like that was found after like 10 years of SC2 being a thing. Feels kind of like when a new stat is found in some speedruns of classic, but extremely popular games.

It’s possible to change everything, but it’s a lot of work to do so
I'm glad that the time it takes to create custom campaigns have been lowered, but in the end it seems like most of these mods are rather shallow in its customization.
