LZ: CLS SE - Expensive....

- This build is was sent to me to take a look at and they are letting me keep the unit. However no other compensation was made and my thoughts are my own, it does not change my view of this board.
The board rings in at a wild $558 USD. It features a large brass weight with a pattern put onto it and an acrylic rings for RBG. It also is a popular board from LZ. It utilizes classic top mount for a pretty solid tying feel and generally good sounding board. It's done right... sort of. I still do not like the mounting point under the space bar and the pattern on the weight repeats way to much that it makes it feel cheap... The RGB? Well I couldn't adjust it at all, but it was really dim, and I really do think it's already at full power. It felt more like an after thought assuming it can't go any higher.
Despite how good it sounded, I am going to be very blunt with this. It is not worth it the price it's asking at all in any regular circumstance. There are PLENTY of other boards you can get with basically the same aesthetic and basic top mount for less than half the cost of this unit.
While I am unsure, I feel like this is targeted towards fans of the brand which is fine, it will just have a tougher time in market.

that weight is the ugliest thing i've ever seen and that's coming from an LZ fan. what were they thinking, it literally looks like cardboard
Eventually there's got a be a cutoff from "classic" into "boring" and this might be it lol
It's practically the same thing at this point. It's just a nicer way of saying boring lmao
New LZ boards aren't even classic at this point, they're lazy.
@@DoozieEXE true. If you look for something classic but not so boring go for merisi or maybe geon (f2 looks really nice imo, soundwise 7/10).
@@quocanhhbui8271 F1-8x is where it's at as far as the classic Korean board look in a modern take. The Daji boards are also a very nice take on that too.
LZ being LZ, taking the piss at this point.
Such a steep price for such a plain board. Oof.
almost $600, phillips head screws in the middle of the weight (phillips in generell), laser engraving ugly (& repetitive), boring & outdated desing.... not even worth 100 bucks imo
Dude did they sell any of these? Nothing exciting about it whatsoever
Honestly, I am unsure.
2:33 that looks ugly asf not gonna lie 😭😭😭
In my opinion - just bad design/value
Bad design is subjective I think. I like how plain it is. But I definitely wouldn't pay this much for a board lol
@@goomywurm nah screws in the middle of the weight looks wack af lol, not even "designed" at all, even if other boards/makers do it it'll probably be more tasteful than that.
@@goomywurmthe original LZ CLS was definitely better imo
@@HoodSwamii agree. I do wanna hear a comparison though. In person
I feel like someone could send you a literal trashcan to build, and you would make it sound like a clacky wonder, idk how you do it
Somehow LZ has managed to make a BRASS weight look terrible... it literally ruins the board because it looks like drywall. Really ugly.
Looks like a KBDFans Gen 1 product, but priced like a TGR board - that's definitely LZ. At least it does not have mini-USB port.
not to hate but, you can say the same thing about mode loop "Casette" version tho, its cost 600$ and not sound better than this
Mode loop more like clown to me compare to LZ board
especially that bar accent
why would put a long bar on top of the board just like their other board that useless bar accent
Yeah I don't care for the $600 dollar version of the loop, but at least they offered a less premium version it
@@alexotos yea but judging from this video, we can both agree that the 600$ one is pretty much overpriced :), one thing you probably forgot to mention about it
@@afipermana551 in the VoD I mentioned that I don’t agree with the pricing and felt 300 ish makes more sense?
I am so glad the HMX bug finally bit you. HMX switches are extremely good and I love every single one of them.
They are splendid honestly.
Yes you finally tied some HMX switches! They are awesome & affordable. Best thing about them though is they do not want to put out a ton of recolors so if you see a new switch from them it will have something unique about it, usually the materials used. They have a ton of different nylon mixes!@@alexotos
do you prefer HMX or BSUN or is that more like comparing apples to oranges?
Damn, the alignment of those screwholes on the back is just ... my eyes wanna pop out of my ass. How can this be a high end keyboard!?
Love the classic style but 8 mounting point is not classic lz iirc
Wow. That is bland.
The original CLS was definitely the better option. This is just low effort
some projects shouldn't come to fruition for the sake of the community and the maker themselves.
I love classic kustoms designs but that weight is just horrendous
Also those screw alignments are awful gah damn
From S.Korea but not available in Korea 😢
This Keyboard has nice sound, nothing more …
Yeah i agree, it's got the classic top mount sound profile which isn't even that hard to really get in most top mount boards. There really isn't ANY incentive to buy this board unless you want to get it for the sake of being a fan of the LZ brand. It's too expensive and doesn't fit in well with todays competition.
I uhhh don't think the acrylic was meant to be cut. Pretty sure the parts you cut off were meant to act as light pipes so the lighting from under the pcb would easily show up on the outer portion.
Maybe I’m wrong but maybe the piece of acrylic you broke off would help disperse the rgb better, since it was directly under the pcb.
Way too expensive for such a plain lookin board, sounds nice though
Price does not make sense for how plain the design is. The patterned weight thing.. is just tacky, in my opinion.
You are genuinely better off making a jane mount one off tkl yourself
It's a pass, nasty looking brass weight and naff screws.
I would love to see the info on your personal build on the RUclips description for each of these videos.
I feel they print a hard shell taco surface...
The thing about buying something classic, something that your grandparents also used, is that when its made today there will be some changes to go with the times. IE using USB C instead of Micro B. But why does the top still slide around with the acrylic layer? Why wasn't guiding pins added? The change in weight design or texture may be new but why the low attention to detail? And wont every board have the same texture? Not even an attempt to refine mounting points? Still the same symmetrical evenly spaced 8?
Yupp, I really don't care for that pattern they added.
some of these new boards are getting out of hand with their pricing, genuinely I don’t believe a single board should be over like 350 no matter the design or whatever… weights and stuff I understand y they can add more cost but other than that … some 60 percent keyboards and stuff being around 500$ is absolutely ridiculous. You can’t even enjoy the hobby anymore and can’t even buy a nice looking keyboard without it being like 450 or something base model, it’s insane
Outdated and sloppy design at a premium price point. Certainly takes a very specific target audience with this combination.
This board would've been a sale to me if they had a different backplate and no philips for almost 600? Yeah gotta do better.
WHAT THE F... LZ
Forgive me for any ignorance, since the cost of manufacturing is one area of keyboards I'm less familiar with the specifics of. How does a box on wedge design get this expensive? It looks slightly different, but I'm not seeing the traditional things that cause boards to be more expensive. Did all the cost go into the weight? That being said it's a great looking board, and sounds good too. Shame about the price.
to be honest given the lazy design, the high price point and what I know of LZ so far...
I personally don't understand all of the hate this board is getting, I do agree that it is overpriced but as Alex said this is targeted towards a very niche group of people and as someone in that group of LZ fans, I can appreciate owning something from LZ with all of the history the brand has had in this hobby. Like, if you don't like it and don't think its worth buying just don't get it. You don't have to go out of your way to spread your hate towards it.
the price for this is objectively crazy. it's definitely not expensive because of the manufacturing cost i feel like it's priced off the hype the original cls tkl had.
lz has some sick designs like the re but the cls is literally so simple that he made a 60%, 65%, 75%, 80%, 98% version of it. I personally have the sxh
@@lobsterglizzy1237 While I do agree the price is kinda crazy, people will buy these kind of products more for the branding and history behind this board as there are so many examples out there where people will buy clothes or gadgets that are objectively maybe not better than other options but have a much higher price point due to branding. I feel like this is a keyboard for those who want to own something from the LZ brand. i personally bought this keyboard for that exact reason as me wanting to own something from LZ outweighed the higher price. Now 99% of people won't be thinking this way but this is something for that 1%
@@ssal4509not everyones going to like it. Just because people are criticizing it heavily doesnt mean that they have no right to. It also doesnt mean that lz is going to stop because of it. I got the lz fe and entered this but I acknowledge that its not loved that much by most and thats okay.
Yeah, $558 is outrageous for a board that does not have much going for it.
pattern on the weight to hide imperfections in the brass probably?
the printing on the brass looks horrible as you can see the pattern repeating.
What's the screwdriver set you're using at 7:40?
$558 for a board with visible screws?
Would you consider reviewing the notfromsam s80 v2? I bought and built mine and I was just wondering if had any opinions on it.
That sounds crazy crisp - might need to get in on some HMX's now..
Price does not seem justified tbh
how would one join a give away 👀
but that poly envoy with future funk
Ariya75 is back in stock
There is continuous noise...
Caught an L on the event horizon 😢
I like how some try to go back to the days of old and it is an interesting and, to our standards, simple period but I will admit that I like the modern choices we have more.
@@Manuel-w3g6p It's because of supply and demand. Not a lot of people want boards with the old designs so they increase the price so they can still have a successful sale of the board.
My $89 KBD8X MKIII has better style, better design and as good if not better sound.
I say better value and better style by a longshot but other than that the lz board is better. Like alex said he sees this as a $300-$350 value keyboard. I feel like kbd is also lacking in today’s competition as well.
cope pooron
MKIII is so average lol, bro is hard coping
I just don't understand why does such a poorly designed keyboard cost so much, there're so many cheaper but better options out there on the market
Well done for another amazing objective keyboard review 😁
Bro, what’s with the hype with the nixie switches? Never even know any Cherrys to even be acceptable unless ran through a break in machine. There’s SOO many incredible switches for less than $0.60/switch. What’s the deal my guy?
Preference, i really like that scratch and textured sound they provide. Other switches I also go crazy for are KTT Roses and Gat Milky Yellows which are also very well priced!
TKL! This keyboard would appeal to a really, really, very, very, very specific niche. People who want to relive 1980 maybe, but all the cheap and bad parts of that time...and yeah the pattern repetition is an eyesore and immediately obvious. Yeah I wouldn't even want it if someone gave it to me for free, but I guess there are people who would want it.
this is one of the few current kustoms you can get today and it def has an audience. not taking any of that into account is kinda annoying. not everyone wants super flamboyant designs and $100 boards
You can definitely find basic looking TKL's and custom boards with a simple design for much cheaper than this. The texture on the weight is lazy at best with it's repeating pattern and the price point is way too high for what it is.
You also didn't take into account moq and what their manu costs are. Small runs with dadesin for example will net you high quality boards (whether you like the design or not is different) that also come with a high price tag. Lz isn't using dds but his manu costs may be similar
"kustom" doesnt mean "lazy" first of all.
then we live in 2023 wtf is groupbuy ?
also we dont care about their "manu costs" just go bigger moq or dont do it. I think they are really confident about their design cuz they posted ic without pics or something. if you are that confident just go bigger moq for cheaper maybe ?
one last word we all know its going to have qc issues xD @@aj4123
@@aj4123eh, as someone who has done small runs from DDS, they are really not that expensive. This board is absolutely overpriced.
Low moq and "classic" is not an excuse for lazy design, lack of features, and ludicrous price
I'm imagining old geriatric keeb hobbyists giggling over this board, lol
It's hideous and under designed, which I didn't actually think was a thing.
PHILLIPS SCREWS??? 😂
