*Mercedes are bringing out shortly a **_Diesel Electric_** Plug in, all cars pre 2019 will be obsolete. Sworn to secrecy so can say no more than that.*
Just bought a GTE, and absolutely love it! Here in Denmark, we get a huge tax discount on cars rated high for MPG. The GTI cost around 480.000 dkk, compared to 350 for the GTE! VW actually arent giving the real numbers. GTE is listed as 7.6 sec 0-100 but real numbers are well below 7..
Bob I have a gte for the past 2 years 21000 on the clock and I’ve put in exactly 600 Euro fuel plus 100 Euro s to get my charger fixed I’ve toyed with the idea of going electric as I drive 20km each way to work with a charger on both ends , I paid 39000 for the car originally planning to buy a Gti on the day because I was disillusioned with chugging diesels ,the dealer gave me the gte for a days trial and the rest is history. I’ve owned upwards of 6 Gti’s 1 gtd and a tt. The gte is by far the best car I have ever owned I also have a 161 passat r line diesel 2.0 currently being ruined by my wife. The problem with goin to electric ⚡️ is you pay to much a premium to lose air con , range when needed ,resale is shocking and the car is completely unbalanced plus the infrastructure for us here is terrible every charge point WHEN WORKING has some assholes leaf in it parked up for the day. Hybrid is the best we can hope for here because we are so deep in diesel in this country and at that it’s expensive. It’s exactly like the time they told the whole country move to diesel and now it’s electric it’s obvious every person in Eire should do the complete opposite of what the government is telling us
My neighbour has an Passat gte for the wife and an e-golf for him self. Since he’s the one driving most he uses the e-golf. And they love the combination of both. They have the Passat for roadtrips when going long distances but going «full ev» on short trips on a daily commute.
bruts82 do you know what toe price drop off is now with 21K off. Any issues with battery depletion. Want to import a 2 year old GTE from UK or NI and worried about battery ageing
Pearse Fitzpatrick it’s as economic as a diesel in hybrid mode and obviously way smother and you gain back on mpg reaching towns and city’s by the build up on your battery Only fault is the boot is tight but running costs at best 20 a month at worst 40euro
Pearse Fitzpatrick I’m not to sure what mines worth now I won’t be selling it but I know there in uk for 16 sterling with 2 grand vrt on that My battery charges to 47 km now But I’ll trade that in for the new one in 2019 that has a 74km range
I live in Colorado USA, and own a 2018 1.8TSI Golf Alltrack (AWD). Absolutely fantastic driver! If VW offered an AWD e-Golf Alltrack with a high range (say ~350km) - I'd happily trade in my 2018 Alltrack in a second. While the 1.8 TSI is a great little engine - give me a good and (relatively) affordable VW EV and I'm sold.
I think it is cool how VW is continually refining the golf, and this looks like a very natural progression. My impression is that it isn't so much an "electric car" as it is a car that happens to have the option of being powered by an electric motor. But maybe I'm biased? I had a mk6 TDI, (sold back to VW, because Amer'ca!?), now own a mk7 GTI. Who knows, maybe I'll get an electric next?
Good video Bob. I love the look of the GTE although it would be good if VW would develop the Plug In Hybrid technology into the normal lower powered 1.5 tsi Golfs in future. Just a thought.
I just want an affordable conversion kit. I have a 2009 C class estate C180 Blueeffciency. I love the shape of it and Ill be happy even with a hybrid kit for now since I moved only 7 miles away from work and reduced mileage considerably.
I'd rather car manufactures go the route of VW and just build normal cars with electric drive. I want to go electric, but I don't want to shout about it. The e-Golf is perfect. It looks normal, but it's electric. Not everyone wants an i3 or Ioniq.
*Love your remarks Bob at **9:59** "We need to be responsible for the Environment" but it saddens me that I see so often in the UK younger people going shopping with no bags and loading their groceries, most of which **_single use Plastics,_** that's causing far more damage ultimately to the Planet. I know you acted far sooner than England to cut down on Plastic having visited a number of times, however this is not just a UK/EU Problem but Global. I urged my son to consider a Golf GTE as his daily trip to/from work is less than 30 Miles, but no Dad he went and got a Golf 'R'*
Bob, buy an EV or plugin in N Ire, no VRT payable on import. Lots of Zoe's or BMW I3. Old Zoe can even be upgraded to current battery or get the updated Leaf version 1 with longer range battery. As I looks weird for a BmW, prices should be good and not unlike the original unappreciated Audi A or original Merc A series
Hi bob I no If we’re going down the electric way all car manufacturers need to get their hands dirty now and not pick and choose when to come into the electric/hybrid car production market I feel unless all car manufacturers start now it will be years before I invest in one as at the moment the cost to buy one is too expensive , as the choose of electric cars is very limited another thing to look at is the cost to replace battery’s which will be a big expense that’s my view I really like the idea of electric or even hydrogen cars but they need to be the same if not cheaper than a fossil fuel car .....
Battery replacement is never going to make sense as a mass-market thing. I've done ~270,000km now across my three EVs (160,000km on my daily driver i3 doing the Portlaoise - Dublin commute). With a properly designed battery pack with thermal management, pack "life" (by which we mean loss of 30% capacity, not a dead pack) is at least 15-20 years, the standard pack warranty is 8-10 years. And even after they lose 30% of capacity, the car is still fine as a shopping car, the battery still has value for resale for grid storage or materials recovery but the the cost of replacing the pack at that point would be a multiple of the value of the car.
Another great review from Ireland which is rare. I would say as a media and complete RUclips junky you videos would get far more views with crisper graphics and a more balanced sound to commentary. Presentation wise very personable and well done on another enjoyable video
Thanks Bob, really interesting comparison. Outside of all the idiosyncrasies of each model car the one factor that would determine my purchasing an electric car is infrastructure. Ireland isn’t great at the moment and that’s a concern. Is there a VW diesel-electric hybrid? Probably not and not ever going to happen I’d reckon. I’ll be watching this space closely over the next 3 years until I’m changing my car again to see what develops. Your videos are a real help, thanks and keep up the good work.
Ive been considering an leaf for several years now. But not bought one because our cabin is 310km away. So that means i would have to charge 2-3times on the way. But Hey, how often Im i there? Couple times a year. My qashqai doesnt have a towbar anyway for my campingtrips. So the few times i Need a ice car i can rent it for the 50k a year i save. Going to sell the QQ and buy an leaf. Better late than never.
I want to get the gte. I’m a city driver. I do very short distance journeys throughout the week. No way I’d be doing more than 15 miles a day. Less most days. Do you reckon I can get away with never buying petrol 😂
I think the issue with electric and hybrid is still coming back to cost, while I appreciate the cost saving on fuel, unless your a company car owner that will get tax breaks etc for the electric, If your determined to have a brand new car and want to save money in the process, unless you do high mileage, I would be pretty confident to say buying a base model petrol is going to be cheaper overall, I get the significant fuel saving, but there's an approximate £10k price difference. Assuming you own the car 3 years which is the average for new car purchases these days, you would have to save something in the region of £57 per week to break even, (not including the additional interest cost due to higher vehicle cost) I'm not saying electric isn't the future, nor am I saying they aren't good, but it's just still at that point as you say, where people are buying these cars, to let everyone know they are buying them. Look at the leaf as you mentioned, while it is slightly bigger and better equipped, for almost 10k less you could buy an entry model new shape micra, have 90% of the usability, with 0 of the range concerns, and £50 to £80 or there about monthly pcp reduction. Only other note I would add, chatting with someone recently who has the gte, he was saying from his experience, while you still get a usable distance from all electric, in the real world of him driving to work etc, he's never managed more than 15 / 20 on one charge

There are no maintenance fees, no oil/spark/brake pad changes, no co2 emissions based road tax.
Seán O'Nilbud incorrect, there are still service costs, still has to have yearly maintenance, at least the leaf's do, Couple that however that whilst yes your services will be cheaper due to lower service items etc, you most likely are kinda stuck with the dealer since very few independents can perform battery checks etc. For example I have a toyota diesel, If you have the hybrid, your supposed to have toyota run a health check on the battery each year, I don't know any independents that can offer this. On the tax front, new cars atm yes, however my car is 66 reg, my tax is £20 per year, even if it's slightly higher with the new brackets etc, not a significant saving.
gerry rowe I go through stages lol, at times I see them doing things that in some ways benefit me, but spend a fair bit of time thinking fuck sake.... they could have used lube.
One comment I would say electric cars have only taken off in the past 5 years or so , normal cars petrol or diesel have had over one hundred years. I wonder what electric cars will be like in 5 to 10 years time if they keep progressing as they have been I think both the range, batterys will improve, and more importantly the cost will reduce
Your so right were all responsible. Great job this video was what I was looking for Individuals don't have the patience to wait to charge a EV they rather give thier money to the oil companies.
Interesting review, I have the GTE available for my next company car with the associated BIK benefits. Unfortunately VW aren't taking orders in the UK due to a backlog.
Vw are pushing these big time with 0 percent pcp deals Went to look at the Exec model and have had a number of follow up calls from the Dealer 33,000 Euros still a big outlay
Volkswagen has an unfortunate habit of listing the price before the VRT credit and SEAI grant. So there is €10k off that price. A more serious issue is that the eGolf is roughly the same price as the i3 (in fact until the latest price changes on both sides the golf was €2k more expensive than the BMW), which has more power, more cabin space, more range, better efficiency and is a proper ground up EV rather than a half-assed conversion. The other issue is due to issues getting sufficient battery supply eGolf production numbers were cut last month so waiting lists are cropping up all over europe.
I got a beautiful blue eGolf 3 months ago and have already clocked up 10,000km - its costing me on average 90 cent per 100km. The actual buying price of the car for me is about ~€27,000 after all incentives for a sole trader like me that made use of the eco-Grant (trading in a 2001 Golf SDI and Accelerated Capital Allowances ...so I'm estimating a saving of €4,000 a year on fuel alone with this eGolf. This is without savings on maintenance and servicing!!! The interior and exterior spec of the car is equal/better than any other Golf or similarly priced electric car.... so its definitely value for money on that front too. In 5 or 6 years, on my mileage - the car will have paid for itself and will still be worth a half decent price - especially considering how rare it'll be. Not hard at all in my case to wrap your head around it. Have done trips Cork to Dublin and Cork to Castletownbere return without any issues. Electric driving is so much more relaxing and easy!! I find myself looking for excuses to go and drive it. Come and go for a run with me and I'll give you a full heads up on my electric driving experience Bob :)
the BMW i3 definitely doesn't have more cabin space!!! its more like a Mini or a Zoe and its a very uncomfortable drive compared to the well built eGolf. Better looks also but that depends on whether you want to declare yourself as an electric car driver or want a car as nice looking as a GTI or Golf R. :P Volkswagen Neo coming out next year will be produced in multiple Volkswagen factories for there will be no limit in supply of this.
I would love an e golf. Unfortunately all my troubles with my regular golf are electrical, doors won’t unlatch, lights won’t light, etc. etc. so how would a fancy, all electric car from Volkswagen fair when they can’t get the basic wiring in the doors and hatch to last??? Basic wiring, a bust. Repairs and glitches.
Nice review bob, would be curious to know your thoughts on hydrogen? Particularly with mercedes efforts. It seems to remedy a lot of the charging and infrastructure issues of ev.
Until Golf or any other similar prices car can do at least 350+ km with one charge INCLUDING in winter with heating and all on then i'm sold. Its just too little current model.
Hello Bob, I am watching your channel a few months now and I like very much the way you are presenting all cars. I would like to kindly ask you to set up the background music a little bit lower so to let us hear you louder and clear. English for me is a second language and hearing you clear is critical to avoid confusions. Greetings from Athens, Greece!!!
Actually, word for word on this video, it is 100% accurate. And if you're still struggling, translate it into greek. Strange that you watch Bob's car reviews to learn the english language. I think he would be flattered knowing that his videos is helping to teach people english, or car english.
I am not watching Bob's videos to learn the english language, but in order to improve my english speaking I prefer to watch whatever interests me in english. Excuse me if this bothers you.
In fairness I mentioned this before, not in a language barrier sense, but the music sometimes used in these videos and the overlay style makes me have to skip
Had the e-golf for 16 months now. It’s so cheap to run it’s a joke. I will never go back to diesel or petrol. It’s also the only car I have owned that is worth more now than I paid for it.
Sorry I disagree with the assertion you want to be seen in an electric car or buying into the dream etc. I just want the car to look normal actually. Until you can get over the charging time l think these cars will largely remain novelties.
This review is biased for 1 reason: The reviewer lives in a house with a garage with a plug. All electric is just not feasible for anyone who lives in an apartment.
Not really is a lot like early 4 speed autos as in very linear , it’s hard to describe but until you try it with zero hesitation and subway/tube wine missing the waiting for a typical engine to spool up delay your realise why it’s easy to get hooked on the ev drive train, sure I’m not telling you to jump at the cheap 24kw models (with 78 mile real world range) also depending on your needs and housing situation (no point going ev if you live in a flat with zero charging) butmake no mistake 40v systems and hybrids and evs with 60kw will be a big part of our auto future
The best video on youtube about these cars! thanks! :)

What I like about the e-Golf is that it looks just like a regular car. I don't like the overly futuristic or abvious styling of so many EVs.

can't argue with that.... savings driving the E, would assist in paying the yearly tax and insurance costs.

Is there much of a performance over the standard e_Golf to the GTE. Extra kit and GTI stick on bits

Excellent
Which? TDI.
Wait... 45 k€ for an e-Golf in Ireland?? That is 5 k€ more than here in France...
Had the e-golf for 16 months now. It’s so cheap to run it’s a joke. I will never go back to diesel or petrol. It’s also the only car I have owned that is worth more now than I paid for it.
Few ecars Bib as 0.1% of cars are EV not 1%, 0.1%
Sorry I disagree with the assertion you want to be seen in an electric car or buying into the dream etc. I just want the car to look normal actually. Until you can get over the charging time l think these cars will largely remain novelties.
You can get a wee Zoe for five grand.
This review is biased for 1 reason: The reviewer lives in a house with a garage with a plug. All electric is just not feasible for anyone who lives in an apartment.
REALLY??!!? 230 kms??! ?? ON ROAD?? LOLL
negative since clinical play extremely adoption visit wind widespread.
Very good idea having the two back to back. The non-DSG box must be a little frustrating though?
Some would say that DSG is frustraiting but maybe depend on what level of comfort you are used to?
Not really is a lot like early 4 speed autos as in very linear , it’s hard to describe but until you try it with zero hesitation and subway/tube wine missing the waiting for a typical engine to spool up delay your realise why it’s easy to get hooked on the ev drive train, sure I’m not telling you to jump at the cheap 24kw models (with 78 mile real world range) also depending on your needs and housing situation (no point going ev if you live in a flat with zero charging) butmake no mistake 40v systems and hybrids and evs with 60kw will be a big part of our auto future
Same info over and over again... :)
As it looks weird
Diesel is the best!
Ehhhh, neither, simples! Long live the combustion engine!
It’ll live on for another while yet.
Lose the stupid music - can hardly hear you.
Why pay even more for a GTE , it's not even plugin
harolds789 The GTE is a plug-in hybrid. Not sure what you're talking about.
It is a PHEV with a EV range of about 50 km.
