I watched this as a 12 year old excited to see where Return of the Jedi, which I thought about every day for the previous three years, would rank. I was so upset it wasn't chosen. Nearing 50, I agree with Siskel & Ebert.
My Top Ten Favorite Movies of 1983 are.
10. The Black Stallion Returns.
9. Return of the Jedi. (R.I.P Carrie Fisher).
8. National Lampoon's Vacation.
7. Daffy Duck's Fantastic Island. Animated.
6. Cujo.
5. The Smurfs and the Magic Flute. Animated.
4. Two of a Kind.
3. The Man who Loved Women.
2. Silkwood.
1. Sudden Impact.
Return of the Jedi is good (certainly better than any Star Wars film since), it's just not as great as the first two.
I grew up in the 80s and lived and breathed Star Wars, but in hindsight, Jedi is really corny and over the top.
Fanny and Alexander, the big masterpiece of Ingmar Bergman that is a peak of a great career
That scene in The Right Stuff...towards the end all the astronauts were in the Astrodome listening to Debussy’s Clair de Lune ...no words necessary
Yes!
The Right Stuff and Terms of Endearment are the standouts of '83 for me.
El Norte is a great film, and still relevant.
P 00
I never heard of it. I'll check it out
No sympathy for pro illegal alien movies
Great time capsule. Miss those two
They really should put all the Siskel and Ebert shows on Netflix or one of the other streaming services.
It's probably the movie clips that have kept that from happening, they likely only had permission to show them for a limited time. Some of the original distributors don't exist anymore so it might be a lot of work just to figure out who you need to talk to, let alone getting permissions
My favorite films of 1983:
1. The King of Comedy
2. Monty Python's The Meaning of Life
3. Zelig
4. The Big Chill
5. Silkwood
6. Return of the Jedi
7. Berlin Alexanderplatz
8. Star Eighty
9. The Year of living dangerously
10. The Dresser
So there.
Blue Thunder was my number 1 best flim of the year 1983
I remember watching Siskel & Ebert’s At The Movies every week on Chicago’s Superstation WGN and on WKYT TV-27 in Lexington.
Local Hero is an absolute gem of a film.
STAR 80, the first time I seen was so chilling. Eric Roberts as the psychotic Paul Snider was robbed at the Oscar's, as he also wasn't nominated. Only a Golden Globe nomination. R.I.P. Dorothy Stratten. I, as my own critic gave the film ***½.
I give it a perfect 4 star rating and YET it is the only Great Movie , aside from Mother from 2017 , another perfect film, that I cannot see again
Star 80 is just so depressing and I had to shower after seeing it because I felt drained watching it , same thing with Mother
It just takes you emotionally that it is hard to watch again
Not seen Pauline at the beach, Betrayed, or The Return of Martin Guerre.....But beyond that ALL these movies are GREAT!
(Especially The Right Stuff, The Year of Living Dangerously, and the magical El Norte)
All those years I didn't realize that Siskel and Ebert are being seen during the closing credits as the last ones leaving the theater. You can see them at 22:26.
I didn't always agree with these guys but I definitely enjoyed their show. I probably watched every episode in the 80s.
I want to see Say Amen Somebody so bad thanks to Ebert. I hope Criterion or something releases it-release it, somebody! :)
I saw it at Ebertfest several years ago. Great film. See it if you can.
@@johnfitzpatrick3094 I did today(6/19/21), TCM played it. It was fantastic, and very worthy his 4/4 rating! :)
My Top 10
1. The King of Comedy
2. A Christmas Story
3. Return of the Jedi
4. National Lampoon's Vacation
5. Rumble Fish
6.. Evil Dead
7. Scarface
8. The Right Stuff
9. Trading Places
10. Risky Business
Some of my favourite movies of 1983 includes:
-Return Of The Jedi
-Vacation
-Trading Places
-Cujo
-Risky Business
-Sixteen Candles
-John Carpenter’s Christine
-Psycho II
-Silkwood
-Right Stuff
-Terms Of Endearment
-The Big Chill
-Testament
-The House On Sorority Row
Is called National Lampoon's Vacation
What about A Christmas Story? Also, Sixteen Candles came out in 1984.
Glad to see Silkwood and the soul crushing Testament. These two had me scratching my head for a minute but they pulled it out at the end. Remember seeing this in December of '83, and it's been a long time since I've seen this. Ahh, memories of youth
I wouldn't call Testament"soul crushing"
@@kdohertygizbur How about "soul pulverizing"?
They overlooked a HELL of a lot of great films from '83, but a decent list.
My list (based on North American release dates):
1. Fanny and Alexander
2. El Norte
3. Terms of Endearment
4. Koyaanisqatsi
5. Scarface
6. Local Hero
7. The Right Stuff
8. Boat People
9. Tender Mercies
10. Danton
Anyone that doesn’t say the uncut Fanny & Alexander is the year’s best is dead wrong. The uncut Fanny and Alexander is head and shoulders above every single film of 1983
IIRC 13 years later, Gene got that Terms of Endearment sequel!
Revenge of the Ninja? One of 1983's finest.
I'm shocked they didn't include "Tender Mercies" or "Local Hero" or "Never Cry Wolf", etc.
me too
My list of best of 1983
Risky Business
The Outsiders
Trading Places
Christine
Scarface
The Right Stuff
Silkwood
Valley Girl
The Big Chill
Local Hero
Fanny & Alexander
Testament
The Year of Living Dangerously
Terms or Endearment
Say Amen, Somebody
Aside from Scarface, you have Damn Good List
Terms / Endearment: a good but not great soap opera, won best picture. For me, Right Stuff was the best picture (thank u, Roger & Gene!)
Terms of Endearment was a good movie and also very sad. But there are some notable films missing from their lists like Return of the Jedi, Scarface, and Trading Places. All of those three were great films and some of the best of the 80’s. I re-watched Trading Places a while ago and it still holds up very well, especially compared to a lot of other 80’s comedies. Movies that came out in the past were overall better than a lot of today’s blockbuster films.
Return of the Jedi, true. Gene didn't like Scarface. I think your choices were runners up. Remember, they can't put every film on that list that they liked.
Octopussy
And what about A Christmas Story?
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Dead Zone, Hunger, Videodrome, Scarface, Terms of Endearment, Thriller. Havent seen Silkwood yet but want to.
I'm glad Siskel & Ebert both liked Risky Business. That's such a fun and emotional movie.
Ocean Sage shut the fuck up
eliminator jr. you are one pissed off person
C A damn straight
A great year for blockbuster sequals 1983.
Thanks for posting these. They are a throwback to a more innocent time.
I saw Star 80 on cable when I was a little kid, and it messed me up. I was probably too young for it.
"Okay, kid...you watch TV while mommy and daddy go play cards. Don't come upstairs until the movie's over." -- Harmonica's dad 😁
@@chiefscheider Pretty close. Dad was out of the house by that time, so I was up late watching cable hoping to see some boobs and hoping my mom wouldn't catch me. I got more than I bargained for--- Star 80 isn't exactly The Last American Virgin or Porky's.
Me, too! ... And I was 16!
Such a good movie tho. Eric Roberts was great
@@rainman4494 he should have got Oscar nominated for it
i was 11 in 83, my Father never censored me and Star 80 was on cable constantly for awhile. my Father and his friends would often watch while they were hanging out, presumably because of the nudity and i of course as an 11 year old was watching it all the time on my own for the same reason. but even then i really did understand what a heartbreaking and tragic true story it is. a story of a really vile self absorbed person trying to use a fairly sheltered and sweet young women for his own attention and then trying to suffocate her as she grows, basically literally later on as he stopped getting his way.
i lived in Oklahoma and Silkwood was also a standard on cable for awhile and all the more jarring for me as a kid because it took place here. there are still not satisfactory answers in that case.
Terms Of Endearment and The Right Stuff are of course classics and wonderful films. some of these others i do not even remember, i may have to look them up.
and of course some of my favorite films did not even make either list.
but mostly i just look around at the shallow fare we have being released these days, really miss films with some humanity and heartbreak and joy.
Terms of Endearment oh gawd..😭😭 I can't watch it anymore, it makes me too sad
I can't stand Terms of Endearment.
John Fitzpatrick Let me guess, you hate the movie because it makes you feel sad, right? Terms of Endearment is depressing to watch, but it’s a good and well-acted film.
@@HugoSoup57 I thought it was boring and predictable.
John Fitzpatrick To each his own then, however I can’t agree with you, I really like that movie.
@@HugoSoup57 I think The Right Stuff is a far better film.
8:16 Star 80 review.
My right ear enjoyed
Eric Roberts is such an underrated actor!
I'm sure these are all great films. Although if somebody stopped me on the street and said, "quick, name something that happened in 1983", I'd probably say the release of Return of the Jedi.
thank you for posting this.
My favorite of 1983 has to be Gerald Kargl's "Angst"
Testament was amazing and sad.
Thanks for uploading this! Loved and miss these guys. Most of my favorite films are from the 1970s and 1980s. Great films by great filmmakers, nothing like the junk we have now. "Terms of Endearment" is my favorite film, period.
OhSankYouDoktor Terms of Endearment is indeed better than most films made today. I grown up in the 2000’s and I still prefer movies from the past over today’s Hollywood films. I like some comic book movies, but come on guys, the Dark Knight is not the 3rd best film ever made.
Agreed, the 70’s and 80’s had the BEST movies. 👍
I need to set this theme song for my mobile phone to wake up on Sunday mornings.
Scarface, Return of the Jedi, The Right Stuff, Vacation, The Dead Zone, Rumble Fish, The Meaning of Life, A Christmas Story, Videodrome and The Boxers Omen
83 was a good year for movies. Tom cruise movie trajectory in the 80s must be the blue print for a rising star. I wonder if winger would have rather been in a supporting rather than share the lead with shirley in the Oscars. She def would have won for supporting. Star 80 , I saw many years after as I was born after , I never heard of dorothy but it really freaked me out. I did not expect it.
what no Trading Places? that was one of the best movies of 1983 too
damian latimer Yeah, Trading Places is a classic, I rewatched it again a year ago after not seeing that movie for a really long time. Still a very good comedy with relevant social commentary that holds up really well today. I was also shocked it wasn’t included on here.
@@HugoSoup57 what about Ten To Midnight?
@@HugoSoup57 yep about Trading Places
@A.A. V what? Ten To Midnight was good and popular
Well, they didn't put Return of the Jedi there either. WarGames was another that I thought was one of the year's best. I think Trading Places wasn't bad, but not one of the year's best.
He dropped the charges! Jesus dropped the charges! 🎶 😄
1. Terms of Endearment
2. Narayama bushiko (The Ballad of Narayama)
3. Fanny och Alexander
4. Le retour de Martin Guerre
5. The Dresser
6. El norte
7. The Year of Living Dangerously
8. Silkwood
9. Entre nous
10. Cross Creek
My personal Top 10 films of 1983, plus some honorable mentions; and I don't include Fanny & Alexander because its original release date is 1982, even though it wasn't released in the US until 1983:
1) A Christmas Story (1983)
2) Return of the Jedi (1983)
3) The Right Stuff (1983)
4) Krull (1983) - Critics, especially Siskel and Ebert, hated it, but I loved it.
5) El Sur (1983)
6) Careful, He Might Hear You (1983)
7) Tender Mercies (1983)
8) The Ballad of Narayama (1983)
9) Danton (1983)
10) Pauline at the Beach (1983)
-----------------------------------
11) The Dead Zone (1983)
12) Terms of Endearment (1983)
13) The 4th Man (1983)
14) Never Cry Wolf (1983)
15) El Norte (1983)
16) Betrayal (1983)
17) Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)
Both "Star 80" and "Risky Business" are terribly underrated.
Risky Business still seems to pretty loved; it did after all make Tom Cruise a star which is why people still seek it out. STAR 80 is a brilliant, powerful film but it's also one of the saddest ever made. A lot of people won't watch it because they think it will be so discomforting and depressing, and they're right...but it still merits attention.
Risky Business = one of the worst movies ever made.
Risky Business is underrated ? You must be joking.
@@KRhetor Star 80 is a work of genius. When you contemplate that story, it makes you question the nature of life.
@@KRhetor STAR 80 has a powerful performance by Eric Roberts.
Savannah smiles was the years best family film
Great movie! I remember my mom cried when the truck stopped for him at the end.
Does anyone know how accurate The Right Stuff is? Or what Glenn and the rest of them thought of the movie? I believe that I have the Tom Wolfe book , but never read it.
Try reading it.
I love science fiction like ---
-The right stuff 😆😆
How did Return of the Jedi and WarGames miss this list???
This was an outstanding year for English-language movies, and there just wasn't room for either of them. I am surprised neither of them chose Local Hero as one of the ten best.
@@KRhetor Local Hero is one of my favorites of all time. And fairly unknown I think. It's a quirky little movie with plenty of subtlety. Ebert gave it a fairly glowing review and 4 stars. I would certainly place it in a top ten list.
Trav D. Return of the Jedi should’ve definitely made the list. I didn’t think War Games was that great.
Runners up. I was thinking the same thing.
Also, Roger had Testament on his list, which like WG, was about nuclear war. So maybe he felt that was the better one.
did he review the star chamber?
My list:
1. Fanny and Alexander (long version)
2. The Right Stuff
3. Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
4. Scarface
5. Tender Mercies
6. Bad Boys
7. El Norte
8. The King of Comedy

What are YOUR Top 10 films of 1983?
No James Bond? STAR 80?
@@chicovoylez3216 Never Say Never Again is honourable mention. I didn't care for Star 80
So they used the same music here as they did for Worst of the Year show, but they would add the sound effect for Worst at the end of it.
She told me we could make more money in one night than I could in a year.
She told me she'd be my girlfriend.
She told me a lot of things.
I believed them all.
No Flashdance ?:))
Well, Gene got his sequel, The Evening Star.
I was just thinking that.......many, many years later.
First time director James l Brooks. No mention of his bro though.
That's because he doesn't have one. Nice try, Noel 👌
In future your videos need more volume
Gene Siskel: “I want a sequel to Terms of Endearment!”…oops!
Risky Business featured one of cinema's most instantly recognizable scores, most famous dance numbers in film history, most iconic images of a hero with TC in Raybans, became a symbol of its materialistic age that now is revisited as a portrayal of innocence, and yet it is a blueprint for coming of age dramas that has survived 40 years. Whether you like Cruise or not, it isnt really debatable if its a great film.
No “Return of The Jedi”?
C. O
They were on the money with The Right Stuff. The best film of the 80's, in my opinion.
John Fitzpatrick Solid choice, I’d say Raging Bull is another good candidate
@@HugoSoup57 I think Raging Bull is a great movie, but I don't like it as much as Siskel and Ebert do. It would be on my 10 best of the 80's, just not #1.
And it would do well on video the next year.
It was the only one on either of their lists which I have seen, and I saw it only on video, not in a theater.
I miss analysis like this. The US no longer cares about the arts. High art to us is a Taylor Swift concert and movie theatres are flooded with Marvel movies.
Did anyone notice that one of the executive producers is named Sheldon Cooper, just like the character from "The Big Bang Theory."
Coincidence.
“Thousands of
Illegal aliens trying to enter the country” the good old days 😡
Where is the cord on the phone Shirley is holding?
No Scarface?
Siskel didn't like Scarface.
Jason Smith I remember Siskel gave Scarface a thumbs down, so that’s probably it didn’t make the list. It is a very good film though, but he probably thought it was too violent.
Well, Gene didn't like that one. With Roger, probably in the runners up, along with WarGames and Return of the Jedi.
Now I feel bad that I've never seen any of these movies.
You should! 😂
Good Lord, how Old are you
Executive Producer Sheldon Cooper?
So?
Never mind, someone else made the connection for me. Well, I didn't watch Big Bang Theory, okay?
Gene got his sequel to terms of endearment....unfortunately it was horrible
Where is WarGames? It has now become a cult classic for my Generation, I was 10 when I caught this....Sudden Impact was a great police thriller too. The Right Stuff just glorified a period in US space exploration history....it was boring and too long.
What is "US avionics history"? Space exploration is not aviation.
I grew up in the shadow of Mission Control among NASA and astronaut families. No one could stand The Right Stuff. It was an atrocious bore that was has been forgotten.
Disney made The Right Stuff TV series last year. Not forgotten at all.
You're joking, right? The Right Stuff is considered a classic movie today, it’s a great film. It's one of the most timeless and best films of the 80's. You're just flat out wrong. It's not an atrocious bore at all and it hasn't been forgotten.
Terms of the Endearment is such a revelation. Burt Reynolds was offered the part of Breedlove the Astronaught, Nicholson's part, but he turned it down for fucking STROKER ACE.
I don't recommend the FOUR hr Fanny / Alexander
5 hours and 11 minutes.
I HIGHLY Recommend it
I can't believe how positive this comment section is. These two are insufferable. The way they look at movies is crazy.
Well then stop watching
@@kdohertygizbur i still find it entertaining. I just don't respect critics like some of you seem to
lol. This is a Hall of Fame “Dumb Take”.
@@sdot5389 hall of fames are stupid
If you post your own top 10 you qualify as being just as pretentious as most Hollywood actors.
RIGHT STUFF was so boring and long.
I completely disagree, it’s one of the best films of the 80’s. It's a great movie. Go back and watch your Michael Bay films.
The Right Stuff is merely watchable. It has a Hollywood Cheesiness quality to it. Any scene with Barbara Hershey I found to be completely forgettable causing the movie to be way too long (3 hours 13 min). Ways to edit this movie & make it better: (1) Remove any scene with Barbara Hershey. (2) Remove all the Australian Aboriginal scenes (that was pure torture). (3) Remove the cheesy attempt at humor with Harry Shearer (great in Spinal Tap, unnecessary here).
No, The Right Stuff is a great film, one of the best movies of the 80's. It is a timeless classic, it's not just "merely watchable".
Tom Cruise 👎🏼
Tom Cruise is a good actor though.
@@HugoSoup57 I'll give him that
1982 was a perfect year but 1983 sucked for movies
I disagree. The Right Stuff, The King of Comedy, Scarface, Terms of Endearment, Return of the Jedi, Dead Zone, Videodrome, Trading Places, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Wargames, Risky Business are classics from that year
