It makes me happy to see Sugafoot raise his arms at the end of the song in acknowledgment of how great they sounded. The background vocals of Chet Willis were phenomenal. Sugafoot was never given nearly his due.
What a loss! A musical LEGEND. When ever I talk about how GREAT GREAT GREAT music USED TO BE...bet you butt I'm talking about this man and music. RIP - Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner. Thank you for the best that it ever was.
48 years ago today (2022) on April 23, 1974: The Ohio Players release their first #1 album. One of the funkiest groups in the funkiest decade, the Ohio Players became the template for a generation of Midwest jamming groups. And on this day (April 23) in 1974, the group finally hit big time pay dirt, releasing their signature album and their first #1 disc, the iconic Skin Tight.
This is NOT ABOUT Paul Schaefer and his band. For Pete sake, give the Ohio Players and one of their biggest hits THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE. You white people always want everything. This is all about the Great Ohio Players and NOT Paul Schaefer
@@URSTUCK-ut4fs Yeah man but Paul's boys held it down like a motherphucker. BY this time there was nothing left of the Ohio Players - only two original members Sugarfoot on guitar (and he is BARELY playing his guitar)and James Diamond on TIMBALES, not even drums. Without Pauls band there is no telling what this would have sounded like. It ain't about White or Black man (although I know what you mean) in this case it's just about music.
@@URSTUCK-ut4fs Shut up. Shaefer's band did do a good job backing the Players. Just cuz he gives a shout out to them is no put down on the Players. That comment had nothing to do with race.
They sound fantastic with the letterman show band. Just imagine how good it sounded being there. Anyhow yup one of my favorite bands Ohio players. RIP Sugarfoot.
Dang!! How could I have missed this live performance all these years. Sounds great and I love the horn section. Plus, they play it true to the original recording.
Whoever mentioned that Will Lee couldnt hang on bass has no idea what he's talkin bout here. Will nails this to a tee and add's his own flavor and embellishments. His whole angle for over the 30 years I've seen him has been R&B so he was perfect for to back Sugarfoot and crew.
A While Back (early 80's), the Group Played at the Airman's Club on Shaw AFB SC... And Let Me Tell You.... The Place Was Packed, and They Brought Their Game... and it was a Fantastic Performance
Happy Birthday to.......Leroy Roosevelt "Sugarfoot" Bonner (March 14, 1943 - January 26, 2013) was a musician, vocalist, and producer. Born in Hamilton, Ohio, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Cincinnati in 1943, Bonner grew up poor, the oldest of 14 children. He ran away from home at 14, and eventually wound up in Dayton, where he connected with the musicians who would form the Ohio Players. The band's lineup changed over the years, but its instrumentation and sound remained basically the same: a solid, driving groove provided by guitar, keyboards, bass and drums, punctuated by staccato blasts from a horn section. Assisted by Roger Troutman and his Zapp brethren, Sugarfoot went solo in 1985 with Sugar Kiss-the same year Zapp released The New Zapp IV U (featuring "Computer Love"), while Shirley Murdock was on the verge of scoring with the Troutman-produced "As We Lay".Vocals were a secondary consideration. "We were players," Bonner told The Dayton Daily News in 2003. "We weren't trying to be lead singers." The core members of the band did not originally sing, he explained, but "we got so tired of having singers leave us that we decided we'd just do the singing ourselves. I used to play with my back to the audience in the old days,” he added. "I didn't want to see them because they were distracting. Then the first time I turned around and opened my mouth, we had a hit record with Skin Tight. That's amazing to me."
Those were the days. I remember when they did this show. Sugar, Chet and Diamond appeared on the tv but not the whole band. Paul Shafer and the band held it down though. This brought back some memories. R.I.P. "Sugarfoot"! O.P. is still "Keepin The Funk Alive"...in 2023
Will really lays it down from about 2:10 on...the early part of the song is rather straight...I'm glad they kept the tempo in check on this one...most of the like clips they push the tempo far too fast....great stuff....
That was no wig. As you can see from the earliest days in the late 60s he had plenty hair. His afro was certainly his and so was his shag in San Francisco 1990
Linn Bonn That is Diamond Williams. He's not wearing an big Afro like he did in the 70's. He's wearing it like a cropped mullet style ( 80ish style. Look more closely.
It makes me happy to see Sugafoot raise his arms at the end of the song in acknowledgment of how great they sounded. The background vocals of Chet Willis were phenomenal. Sugafoot was never given nearly his due.
This is what a live band sounds like. This can't be faked! No amount of autotune can produce the raw, real energy these icons are producing!!!
There are only two present here. Lol 2 of the group only
I totally agree!!! 👍👍💯
Who ever gave this a thumps down is a thumps down themselves. This is Sugerfoot singing FIRE! Over 45 years now and it is still popping 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🔥
Sugar is still sounding good with sex appeal as always
Well it is not the band as introduced I think that is why. Just a guess
Damn, they did really good for only having three members of the orig in the set!!
What a loss! A musical LEGEND. When ever I talk about how GREAT GREAT GREAT music USED TO BE...bet you butt I'm talking about this man and music. RIP - Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner. Thank you for the best that it ever was.

Paul Shaefer's band is always spitting out soul music to the tee!

Will Lee handles the bass just fine. He's in the pocket and has the feel.
yeah but i'd rather hear the dewd that wrote that bass line.
@@paulgila22 FACTS!! Ain't nobody thinking about Will Lee. It's about the Ohio Players!!!

I got wise to Will Lee when he was with the Brecker Brothers in the mid 70s. His is a broad-based ability.
Yeah he's slamming on that bass 2:27
Sorry, which one is he please. TFS
@@ohioplayer That is wicked as hell!!

The LEGENDARY Ohio Players
no one knows that Prince used that guitar verse riff in When Doves Cry.
OHHHHhhhhhhhh so that's who Prince was trying to imitate. Prince was trying to be "SUGARFOOT". Mystery solved.

Imagine The Ohio Players playing on Live from Daryl's House
Was at a wedding with a bunch of my firefighter buddies a few years back and the girls had us line up and dance to this. That was a low point!
Cause when you hot, you hot…… then Mr. Lee drops that tasty bass riff. Young ones will Never understand, it ain’t flash…it’s groove!

it was on NBC more like 1987.
The mullets on certain band members certainly attest to your time period assessment.
Lay down the groove and spank it - even in the 80's! Great

What the hell is going on? Sugar foot and "who the hell are you?" Wow this flew over my head. Horrible rendering of the original song.
Dude, come out of that shell of yours and wake up. You are so far behind.
