A song like "Fire" is the result of a lot of hard work not just spontaneous combustion. W.C. Handy, Louis Armstrong, Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Jimi Hendrix on through the R&B/Funk bands these guys had music training. The number of members of this band of players is long, they were formed in 1959.

One of the first songs I consider funk was Chairman of the Board Pay to the Piper 1970, they came out with Finders Keepers 1973. Soul Music from 1960s - the mid 1990s the best. Love you guys
