    We're keen to know. Would you sail an ocean passage?

    • @bertski60
      @bertski60 5 лет назад +1

      in a heartbeat. (if i knew how to sail)
      i wished i started watching YT sailing channels 25 years ago. i know i'd have my own sailboat long ago. i've caught the sailing bug bad but alas too old now. but thanks for having me along. it's fun watching sailors like you tackle the long passages because your excitement and appreciation of your surroundings is contagious.

      Sailing SV Sarean yes, yes, yes! I can't wait. My boyfriend and I will be setting sail hopefully next August, to cruise for a year or more. We will both be in our 60's by then... never too old. In the mean time I enjoy living vicariously through your videos. Thank you kindly for sharing with us.

    What makes us sail oceans, independence, adventure, excitement, because we can and are sick of the crowds and the sillieness that is becoming the norm now. It's another world out there and I still miss it. May the wind always be at your back, and the sun shine upon you.

      Interesting stuff put out by the Sailing Totem folks about being experienced. I did the qualifying yachtmaster voyage, 680 miles as skipper. We tacked once, put a reef in once, furled the sails once, and parked the boat once - (there was a lot of boat management as you will know). In my first ever race as a skipper with zero experience we tacked about 20 times, gybed 4 times, rounded 7 marks, came completely, motherless last and were then disqualified for missing a mark. The next race we sank. So 3 hours experience over 12 miles was a real experience, and without it I wouldn't be doing ocean voyages.

    I will never forget the majesty of watching the sun set and rise over a horizon of nothing but ocean while I was in the U.S. Navy. There is something about it that infuses the salt and the sea into your blood for the rest of your life. I will always long for the ocean. So grateful to you guys for sharing a bit of it with us.

    • @bertski60
      @bertski60 5 лет назад +1

      i worked offshore (drilling rigs) on ships as well and even though i was born on the prairies far from any salt water i know exactly what you mean.
      i spent a great deal of handrail time just standing and gazing at the ocean while thinking of absolutely nothing. it does get in your blood alright.
      kind've like staring into a campfire, for me at least. it transfixes you. (and fixes you)

    • @philgray1023
      @philgray1023 5 лет назад +1

      Interesting to hear that. I have something wrong inside me that gives me a flash of doom as the night comes. The feeling that there is no way out until morning. Don't know where it comes from. I had it my first night at sea on a navy ship and still get it now on my own boat. Then I just get on with it because nothing beats a sunrise at sea. I have a lot of relatives that have been lost at sea so maybe that is where it comes from. At least I don't have U-boats to worry about.

    My wife & I found that cutting a large clorox or detergent container in half & shaping it a little like a urinal (using the half with the handle) worked superbly for both of us for peeing within the cockpit when on passage. It was easy to empty over the lee side of the cockpit & still remain secure & was MUCH easier & quicker & cleaner than using the head inside the boat, especially in a bigger seaway. No bracing on the head or pumping, messing with valves, sloshes over the rim, etc. We used the same bottle for 5 years, attached to a stanchion with some thin line & kept it stored inverted & secured over the top of a spare anchor shank when not in use. When we had visitors in the cockpit & they asked what we used "that" for we simply replied we used it as a bailer sometimes lol. It was brilliant! Try it, you'll like it!

    • @WE_WUZ
      @WE_WUZ 4 года назад

      Excellent! We barely used the head on our voyage. For peeing, we used gatorade bottles and for #2 we wore a glove and simply tossed it overboard. I call it the 'monkey method'. By the end of the voyage, whether it's 2 hours or 2 weeks, we'd have quite the school of marine life behind us waiting for a quick meal.

    Bon Voyage and smooth seas. Visited Noumea in 1977 (a long time ago). A beautiful place but found it to be very expensive. Some of the islands surrounding Noumea are worth a visit. Isle de Pines to my memory is definitely worth a visit.

    watching your videos is like reading Kahlil Gibran. ' In the depths of the sea, surrounding the nearby islands where the sun rises, there is a profoundness. And there where the pearl exists in abundance, lay the corpse of a youth encircled by sea maidens of long golden hair. They stared at him with their deep blue eyes, conversing among themselves with musical voices. And the conversation heard by the depths and conveyed to the shore by the waves, was brought to me, by the frolic-some breeze.' Taken from The Mermaids writen by Gibran.
    I wish you all happiness and time in the bottle, you are both, very beautiful sailors... cant wait for a nice long dose, of Sailing Sarean across the oceam.

    I'll be interested ti hear if Noumea Marina has been cleaned up of all the plastics in it. I remember in 1990 coke & lemonade bottles knee deep. That memory & the open sewers has stayed with me all these years. Sorry about the gloom but I would be interested.
