Can we outrun a thunderstorm at sea?! #56

  • After settling into life on our light wind offshore passage we awoke to find ourselves totally becalmed and drifting on a glassy sea. After going in circles we gave in and began to motor in the hope of finding some wind but instead found ourselves being chased down by a growing thunderstorm and attempt to track its path to get out of its way!!

Magical, you cannot see where the sea ends and the sky begins. Thoroughly enjoy watching every episode, playing catchup.

Best filming yet - the calm was simply beautiful and great content as ever 😊

Thanks Richard, very kind of you as ever! The calms were certainly stunning to look at and comfortable to travel on we were slightly caught out by not quite having enough fuel as we had been fairly confident to be sailing even if slowly. We weren't prepared for just how calm it would be! But we made it thats the main thing. Thank you for your kind words... very much appreciated. :-)

Love the calm water at anchor, but you are totally becalmed. One of the things I appreciate is seeing your vest on when adjusting sails, even when it is calm terrible accidents can happen! Credit to you both for this. Great film.

Hi Jim, thanks for jumping in to comment. The calms were stunning to look at and at least it was a comfortable ride but a little more fuel would have been nice. We didn't consider that 200 litres might not be enough! The vest wearing... yes we were starting to fall into the Med habit of not wearing one but quickly decided to not follow the herd as you can just as easily drown in the Med as anywhere else! Our rule now is that if "working" on deck (as opposed to sunbathing because the vest makes bad tan lines!) and can't swim to shore then it is worn. We have been mostly good at sticking to it. We risk assess not wearing it while docking in harbours in hot weather but even then I appreciate things could still go wrong but that is what we have decided. Anyway thanks for your comment and support :-)

I see now just how spooky my comment to you was re: ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ !😂
Great footage of that oily calm.

Hi Robin... yes indeed how spooky was that? But I guess great minds and all that! The oily calm was truly beautiful to look at but fuel was definetely a concern! Cheers for now

Have had a busy few weeks, including motor cruising up the River Saone in France, so have just binge-watched the last three episodes.... love the glassy seas for looking at, but not sailing on for too long!

Hi Janice... wow we're quite jealous. The french canals and rivers are on our list of things to do one day. Not sure if it will be a boat of our own in the future or just a holiday...the future is as yet unwritten. Anyway I'm glad you've enjoyed this series so far. Look out for Bonifacio in the next episode... if you've not been there it is incredible and even if you have then hopefully you'll enjoy seeing it again. And yes the glassy seas were stunning and very comfortable but not great for the fuel budget! Thanks for your comment, great to hear about your adventures too 🙂

The glassy calm was gorgeous Norma, we just didn’t expect it to be so totally flat. We wouldn’t have minded sailing slowly but didn’t anticipate not being able to sail at all at times! You never know what you’re going to get whilst sailing! 😊⛵️

Good time for a swim when the boat stops mid ocean. How frustrating that weather. I would have had engine on.

Swimming?….Kate has a phobia of swimming in deep water and I am basically too lazy to unstrap and lower the dinghy(we don’t have a side ladder) just for a quick dip oh and also I’m a self confessed cold water wuss…18°c is WAY too cold for me! 🥶😂 And yes it was frustrating and the engine did go on! We were trying to be good sailors and save fuel, we’d have been happy at 2kts but 0kts just didn’t cut it!! We didn’t refuel in the Aeolian Islands as we had over 70% fuel which is probably 200ltrs, as you’ll see in the next and final chapter of this crossing we were getting quite low by the end so did motor quite a lot 😬😬😊

Hi Iain - I'm intrigued by that long 'invisible' stick thing that you've obviously attached a camera to as the pictures are superb. What is it, please?!?

    • @FollowIntrepidBear
      @FollowIntrepidBear  11 месяцев назад +1

Hi Iain it’s a 360° camera, Insta 360 X3 with invisible selfie stick (extended edition 3m long!) Basically the 360 camera works by having two wide angle cameras with overlapping fields of view and the clever software removes the stick due to its position. Occasionally you can see a hint of the stick but it’s not bad as you can see. Hope that helps 😊

Many thanks; the results are stunningly effective. It was either a stick or your drone flying had progressed to rival 'Top Gun'...! Just catching up on your series; given that it was filmed in May, I'm glad you obviously made it to land without suffering more like the Ancient Mariner.

@iainmacdonald1170 thanks Iain..yes we made it through the season in one piece and are tucked up in Almerimar for 3 months of winter before moving to Gib in the new year! Yes the 360 camera is a very clever gizmo but you’re right I’d have to be Tom Cruise to fly the drone that close to the boat although I do fancy an FPV drone one day so you never know!! Cheers

Great series, I'm wondering what the VAT situation is if you get back to the Uk. You are missing nothing in the UK so enjoy yourselves and you are making me hungry.😁

Hi, glad you're enjoying it. So, as far as we know, our boat is UK vat paid and was in the UK on Brexit day so she retains her UK vat paid status as long as we are the ones to bring her home. If we sold her abroad she would lose her UK vat paid status.
The was, until fairly recently, a 3 year rule that if the boat was out of the UK for more than 3 years then VAT would be payable upon her return to the UK. That has recently been rescinded and very glad about it we are too. It always seemed an incredibly unfair rule to have to pay VAT again on your own boat that you bought in the UK but went sailing for a few years... don't understand how that was ever fair! We are actually homeward bound, as mad as some people will say we are for heading back, and will just be back within the 3 years in any event. Thats our understanding of the VAT as it applies to us. It does very considerably on individual circumstances and a lot depends on where vat was originally paid and where the boat was on brexit day. Thanks for your comment. Hope you enjoy the last instalment as we finally complete this passage...:-)

Totally agree a very unfair rule, that I'm sure in some cases has caused real hardship.Safe travels.
