- Headhunters is a short story in Halo: Evolutions - Essential Tales of the Halo Universe, a collection of short stories by a number of authors. It tells the story of a specialist team of SPARTAN-IIIs, mainly Roland and Jonah, two top echelon elite SPARTAN-IIIs who are selected by ONI Section Three for a special branch under the Beta-5 Division. Headhunters is written by Jonathan Goff.

That's the problem with Halo. If there's a cool character and it's not the Chief, they may as well be dead already.
This story was created to show the kind of hardships UNSC special ops soldier went through without Mjolnir armor, kind of like Reach showing how bad the war actually was

why are people confused with how much they talk? spartan 3s were wayyyy more sociable and laid back than their spartan 2 counterparts, plus this is exactly the kind of banter we saw in halo reach, even jorge talked a lot. while they are all spartan they are stark differences between a spartan 2 and 3. 2s are your walking tanks who don't talk and live for war, 3s were a bit more complex in that they knew life outside of the program and grew up around many more peers. So it only makes sense they are more comfortable with each other and less stoic. Team dynamic was also a key in spartan 3 combat as opposed to 2s who could essentially be one man armies, so talking and interacting was paramount.
SIII fight to avenge their families, SIIs fight because ONI told them at 10 too
S2s were kidnapped at 4 or 6. Can't quite remember.
Spartan 3's were also not as effective as the 2's
Spartan 3's also were more animalistic, they were designed to revert back to being primitive humans and go savage on their enemies

I know it was a setup but the story itself and characters were terrible and the gameplay is borderline call of duty. If you don't believe me watch The Act Man's videos on it.

Dr. Bright not many knew of the Silent Shadow, and the way they act is more like an Inquisitorial role so...
Plus it's quite probable that more experienced Elites such as the Silent Shadow recognise there is practically no difference between themselves and the Headhunters and they tend to be more pragmatic types anyway compared to an typical honour obsessed Elite Minor

I've read the book of this story and I'm glad the part where the elite slashes his blade across Jonah face wasn't in to much detail it had Jonah's eye sizzle and POP that would have given me nightmares

Man it really would have sucked for the Covvies if the UNSC had developed the cheap Gen 2 MJOLNIR mark 7 suits during the war instead of after it. The hundreds of Spartan 3's would have all been outfitted in real MJOLNIR suits and not the drastically inferior SPI Armor suits.
You must realize that 1.Only one set of Mk. VII armor exists and it's wearer is Naomi-010. 2. Mk. VII is GEN 1 armor, not GEN 2. 3. GEN 2 armor is all the same, just with different variants for different situations whereas GEN 1's armor(Mk. IV-VII), actually all had changes from the previous model and it wasn't until Mk. VI that variations of the armor for different environments existed.
Turbo furby Gen 2 armor is however more efficient and has a higher Speed/strength multiplier to the point Spartan IV`s can match Spartan II`s physical abilities wise (not so much in sheer skill, reflexes, experience and agility tho, and outside armor the IV`s would get raped).
The gen 2 armor is far newer afterall, so that was to be expected.

A couple of things
1--They aren't throw away or suicide troops, they are simply considered much more expendable than previous Spartans while much, much more capable than ODSTs or Marines. In 2 cases they were deployed into suicide missions because there was no choice, it was either 2 dozen dead Spartan-2s along with their super expensive MJOLNIR armor gone, or several thousand ODSTs plus several thousand supporting Navy and Marine personnel and a dozen or so starships, or 300x Spartan-3's with the much more affordable training and armor (compared to Spartan 2s) in order to complete the high value objective.
2--Top Spartan 3 personnel were taken out of the Spartan 3 companies and placed in special units such as NOBLE and Headhunters, among some other groups, and either given MJOLNIR or highly upgraded versions of SPI armor. These units were never expended in suicide missions.
3--The original idea behind the Spartan 3 program was to expand it to eventually field tens of thousands of them. Yet they never did field numbers like that, possibly because it took longer than they thought to apply their genetic and implantation improvement technology to be usable on adults (up until Spartan IV program only pre-pubesent people could go through the process). By the time that technology had improved to augment adults, the technology to more cheaply mass produce MJOLNIR armor had also matured, resulting in the "best of both worlds" with the Spartan IV program.

How is thing not being made into a game. Obviously not this exact story, but something from the head hunters lore. Think a third person splinter cell meets metal gear, set in halo. You can customize your Spartan and you'd actually see them.

Elliot Britton you are half right... the Spartan twos were taken they didn't choose. The Spartan threes choose, they were orphaned kids from worlds that were destroyed by the Convenient ranging in a lot of ages (which they could because the augmentation was less severer) so they did have lives before the "Spartan life" that they would remember because they were regular kids.
***** halo nation and halopedia all describe this. The Spartan 3's were on average older than Spartan-2's when recruited but the ages did vary by quite a lot, and they consisted of orphans from planets glassed by the covenenant, not trained for nearly as long as Spartan-2's, given safer but slightly less effective augmentations, and given SPI Armor (basically heavily upgraded ODST armor with active camo ability and no energy shields or exoskeleton speed and power boost) instead of MJOLNIR armor since MJOLNIR was incredibly expensive at that point (shortly after the war the much cheaper Gen 2 suits make it affordable to outfit hundreds of Spartans in MJOLNIR).

Even in his death, he made sure that the Covenant would not gain access to Onyx and its technology. He knew he wasn't going to make it with the injuries he sustained during the battle of Onyx, so he went with the only viable option he had left, nuke the Covies while sending the rest ahead. Great to see his sacrifice to save the lives of the SPARTAN IIs of Blue Team, Tom and Lucy of Beta Company, the remaining SPARTAN IIIs of Saber and Halsey and Mendez paid off.

I find it funny people said these guys don't talk like military. Hell I don't talk to my petty officers all formal all the time and these guys are basically a spec ops unit which means they tend to be alil less formal then the others. Also spartan III were the major spartan force on reach because noble six was a III and as the orion program progressed so did the tech to make Spartans which means they could have got these to at any age I would say around 12 to 14 and they are still kids in their training and kids can be assholes to each other don't bring the so and don't say well the beginning said this that doesn't mean its around that time.

@The Random Gaming Box spartans IIIs that didnt live to the events of reach (alpha and beta company) all died under the age of 18. Any that lived til reach or after (gamma company being the exception as they were all under 18) were in their 20s. They were child suicide soldiers.

Another key point is their motivation, revenge, something even the spartan IIs didn't have in such a way. The ones who actually survived their original mission usually became almost as good if not better than Spartan IIs.

I loved reading this story and they did a great job animating it. I gotta say they made the psychospartan alot more charismatic than how I Interpreted when I read it. My only complaint is that 343 always fucking leaves out the most epic lines. The spartan is supposed to say "6 of you 1 of me, that's a fair trade." Or something along those lines. I forget the exact quote.

You do realise, that the IIs were the first spartans to have energy shields, so they most likely had uneffective shields, and just because the Master Chief was a II, doesn't mean there instantly the best.

To all those arguing about spartan 2's vs spartan 3's,
Spartan 3's were meant to be disposable heroes, they were supposed to die, and complete their mission, they received cheaper and less effective augmentations, and had worse armor.
Spartan 2's, while in far smaller numbers, were meant to survive. They would be sent on suicide missions, and they would survive. For example Kelly, could jump out a Pelican and survive and continue fighting.... With a collapsed lung and internal bleeding.

Man this characterizes the Spartan III so much. They're human enough to form bonds and realize how messed up they are but detached enough to not care about a friend's death or their situation

This video always pissed me off. Why would EMP grenades not be standard issue on marines. Where they only for spartan III’s
big 131 I have to imagine they’re very expensive and complicated to mass produce. If the UNSC couldn’t afford to give the SIII’s proper armor they probably can’t afford to supply even a limited number of these to regular troops.
@@SergeantKillGore The UNSC produces its own money, thus simply making EMP’S cost nothing would be a lot better than not.
@@michaelterrell5061 The UNSC did have a limitless budget in theory, but they were still constrained by physical materials and manpower. There was most likely not a readily available supply of materials to mass produce the grenades for distribution to regular infantry.

It has been several month since I've read Halo Evolutions, but as far as I remember, this actually followed the story of Head Hunters rather well. Head Hunters was one of my personal favorites, and it deserves it.
I honestly hope to see more of these types of animations
Spartan 3s were the ruthless animals of the the spartan family. They trained harder than any other set of Spartans and learned how to do massive damage with bare bones equipment as opposed to the spartan 2s shiney tech. I think of the spartan 2s as similar to Rangers, skilled efficient killers and highly disciplined and come at u with brute force and power spartan 3s are like Green Berets, more laid back and unconventional and rely on more tactics and guerilla warfare.
Spartan 3's are more like rangers since they're direct action and usually get killed more often. 2's are like devgru or delta

Voice acting could have been better. Had trouble tellling which character was speaking because of the same sounding voices and lack of any sort of emotion, even during the scenes that require at least /some/ form of emotive inflection.
