- In this spell I read you Yeats’s poem Sailing To Byzantium and I tell you about how I sailed from Byzantium and reflected on Yeats’s poem but also on the teachings of St. Paul in whose wake I was sailing.
You can if you wish, encourage me with coffee and cake here - thanks www.buymeacoffee.com/malcolmg... Видеоклипы
I first read this Yeats poem in college, as a young man. Now, in middle age, more than twenty years later, I wept reading this with you. So, so beautiful. Thank you, as always.
yes, I think its a poem that gets better as one gets older!
Absolutely love the history within the byzantine my personal favourite subject being the varangian guard of the old empire before they were overran by the ottomans unfortunately
Still today spoke highly of their service and oath of loyalty and Absolute battle fury like berserkers dawned in gold
First many of these were raiders from the North in search of riches via the tails they had been told from previous sailing parties and when the empire become weak towards the end of its rain many saxon warriors came from England taking up arms within the ranks of the varangian and stood firmly against the ottoman before being driven into fire (they pushed the varangians into a barn since they were the only ones left and set the barn alight)
History buffs on the subject will tell you how sincerely loyal to the empire they were and being directly paid via the emperors hand (something like 40x the average pay) one harald hardrada joined the ranks in the early days and sailed back to Norway with enough gold to rise his own army and effectively became king for the following 20 years
Your pipes and library brings back childhood memories of a uncle …….touches my heart . He wore button sweater vests
God is good
Been angry latly over everything and life
Just listing to this guy talk calmed me down
Hes so happy. I want that
Again proving that subtlety is the best way to get these eternal matters acoss (rather than the sledge hammer method adopted by some). Many thanks Malcolm
Always enjoy and cherish your posts, Mr. Guite. What a treasure. Glad you had a good trip. Greetings from Appalachia
Glad you enjoyed it
Good Morning 😊 Glad you had a fantastic trip abroad 👏🏼
Beautiful pipe in hand 👍🏼 Thanks for sharing & having a pipe with me , always enjoy your contents 👍🏼 Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦
Sailing to Byzantium has always reminded me of Tennyson's Ulysses.
yes I think there are echoes
I’m glad your trip went well, but I’m equally glad you’re back with another spell in the library. Thank you for continuing to open your home to us.
As always, a great video! Thank you, Sir. Greetings from South Africa!
Thank you, Mr. Guite, for expositing this poem -- it rather puzzled me on past reads, but now I'm getting to grips with it. And, of course, for the lovely affirmation of contradiction reconciled in your own article and sonnet. Cheers from Louisiana
I just want to let you know that I deeply appreciate your poetry. You and a handful of others have been one of my few sources of consolation, without which I might not still be here. You affect more people than you know, thank you.
Good to see you Malcom.❤
always excited for your posts
Happy to hear that!
Very nice Mr Malcolm...nice Peterson as well...✌️
This may be my one single favorite poem, thank you for this video
Wonderful, God bless! Glad you had a great trip and safe travels. Thank you.
You, sir, are the professor some of us know and long for again. This was simply beautiful. Sláinte, indeed.
i loved your sonnet for St Paul. it had the ring of a Troparion, a hymn that calls us into the contemplation of a person or a deed larger on the inside than on the out.
to hear a poem from the poet's lips is best.
Thanks so much for this. All fascinating
Thank you, Father Malcolm. I love your talks. Deacon Leslie
"Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth."
-Brother Timothy
Love your videos Malcolm!
Thank you, I really enjoyed this! 😊
Fascinating and beautiful analysis.
Thank you.
Happy to hear of your safe return Malcolm, with the terrible fires in the area.
Thank you kindly, it seems we just escaped them
Thank you again for your erudition and enlightenment, sir. I will attempt a reading of Yeats' great poem for my channel.
Thank you for sharing your newest creation. The paradoxes were interesting and beautiful. Was the book you recommended entitled “A Reader's Guide to W.B. Yeats” written by J. Unterecker?
Yeats would have seen the Agia Sophia when she was still a mosque, before the monster Ataturk turned her into the abomination of desolation. Who can deny that the recent restoration of Abrahamic worship in the building is a return to the light?
Malcolm, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on Yeats and his relationship with the Golden Dawn and Magic. Both of which had a profound influence on his life and poetry. All the best, Jack.
I could have a go but its probably too complex for a short video. He entertained some strange beliefs, but his poetry was wiser than he was
“His poetry was wiser than he was” man that’s a brilliant response. I’ve found it true of my own journey too. Carrying glory is a mystery and madness all its own.
@@MalcolmGuitespell his ideas around the human imagination being this sort of bank of memory that people can tap into, makes a lot of sense to me
Hello welcome back ,glad you had a nice time and excellent article 🙏god bless thanks 🙏
Make Istanbul Constantinople again.
Wonderful, thank you Malcolm.
Glad you enjoyed it
Really enjoyed this episode - thank you! You should come to Ireland and visit Yeat’s tower Thoor Ballylee in Gort, Co Galway. I was there last summer. It’s well worth a visit!
A lovely video Thankyou. I often wonder how to escape the small word of ‘More’. I feel this has been going on for centuries.
Thank you as always. As much as I'm inspired by your readings, I'm still unable to make sense of Yeats, to a greater extent even than Keats. The most I can make out of this is the last line, which reminds me of Pink Floyd's "...and all that is now/ and all that is gone/ and all that's to come/ and everything under the sun...". But even then, "Eclipse" refers more to Ecclesiastes than Yeats. 'Gold enamelling and Grecian goldsmiths'? It sounds nice but I have no idea what this guy is trying to say. I would be grateful for some elementary guidance from you.
I am 71, just lost my father, 94, providential this post.
Sorry to refer so much to norse/saxon history so much but I cannot help but see the similarity of Yates outlook on byzantine (eternal) as the same way many warriors referred to byzantine rivers running with pure gold and it being a place of pure wealth both within riches and health
I could be wrong but I do remember many of the raiding party's talking of how even just the rivers alone seem to run with pure gold and you'll find beautiful women beyond your dreams comprehension 😅 I'm sure many of them did too but all of the back of rumours or passing folktales of lands beyond the mountains nd sea
Yeat’s arising clapping hands with Blake...brothers
Should we expect more meditations on writing, perchance?
New door, Malcolm?
I have found the Fountain of Youth
The Cornucopia of LOVE resides inside each Soul.
The eternal effusion that grows by being unconditionally and freely given, and directed. Spend your Love directed at the beautiful or poinient, and do it completely, Emanating it forth.
And then...Love will replenish and so fill your heart a flooding gushing energy that you must not ever Hold, a treasure that must Be unimpededly given or Perish and wither, not only It, but you
Do this thing. And you will be FullFilled.
Avarice is a sink hole that grows by what it feeds on. It swallows whole it's Acolytes, ravages their Reason, and so deranges their Logic that they would let their Mammon God so devour and poison our World that None would exist.
No more.
This shrugging of the Beastial Avarice? It is the final Battle. Let Canny Swift Angels ordered by our better mature Swoop! Upon the GreedMachine in all its forms.
Wish US luck. !
Anglo Saxon a true love even though he looks like dr Zeus from planet of apes
Did I spy a bit of Rattray’s on the shelf there?
Malcom, who comes in at 1st position out of Yeats or Keats?
Keats for me, but I'm glad I dont have to choose between them!
Did you get your house addition complete?
yes
Don’t take this the wrong way but you are a time travel right old man 🤭
Thanks for sharing this -- and good to see a pipe as well. However the audio level is quite low. Please consider a lapel microphone or some better audio device for your videos. THanks.
Noted! Its quite a good mic but I'll see if I can turn up the recording level
Great Britian sure looks great if this is what it's all about. Love for life and all things. What more is there? A person has so much freedom, enough to become a scolar. I'm from N.Y. and most of it is the dregs of society. You in your Country become better people and New York is the Apple in decay. It rots. Drugs, murder and rape were commonplace until the war has ended and prior was worse. I once had a conversation with a N.Y.C. homicide Detective who said all day and night long they went looking for bodies to identify. Because there were so many they just went to crematoriums. N.Y.C. didn't have the money or time to identify any of them usually. Great Britian, a place to live a good life. I'm actually so sorry I was born here. You have it good.
Great Britain is far worse off than us. London is just as bad if not worse than New York. Just because a scholar has the current freedom to share his thoughts does not mean the UK is better than the US. The UK is bad off and the US is right behind them…
My understanding is that they are suffering a similar decline. We've got our work cut out for us.

the root evil of evil of byzantine civilization was not simply it's worldly pride - it was a blind faith ,a basic unreason.
In the wake of the destruction and desecration that was the Enlightenment, it is unfathomable to me that any could still praise reason, it has proven the greatest curse mankind has ever known. I will take the barbarian hordes over so-called 'reasonable men.'
"Sensual music", not "magic".
Good to see you again. I don't comment much, but I enjoy watching. GOD bless you and I love you my friend. Keep up the videos and insights. :)
Istanbul! What a city! I visited there in April of this year 2023. I tasted Turkish coffee ☕️. Had Turkish Delight and tea at the Bazaar. Visited Sofia and The Blue Mosque. The Sultan’s Palace. Dinner cruise on the Marmara. Such sweet people too. Great 👍 experience. We went to Athens. After that the Dalmatian Coast.
thanks
