  • The plot is a simple one: His money stolen, adorable misfit Little Billy (Paul Jacobs) must outwit the older neighborhood bullies (Gordon Griffith, Matty Roubert) if he is to succeed in his quest for ice cream.
First premiering in January 1914, 'Triumph' was the first of four "Little Billy" comedies made by Keystone and the first starring role for Paul Jacobs at just three years old. While not the Keystone studio's first "Kiddie comedy", according to Blackhawk's text intro, this film "proved that Paul could carry an entire reel by himself", justifying Sennett's further investment into their production.
'Triumph' is a slick exercise in parallel editing, and a potential influence on everything from Truffaut's breakout hit to Herz Frank's 1978 film Ten Minutes Older, as David Cairns of Shadowplay on WordPress points out.
'Triumph' was re-issued by Tower Film Corp at some point, and the title cards (and title card artwork) herein are Tower's, and not Keystone's. I could find no details as to when my 8mm copy was printed, or where Blackhawk sourced the original from. To my knowledge, 'Triumph' is the only Little Billy movie that exists in digital form.
Blackhawk 810-10-0581 scanned with a Wolverine Pro at 2K, text intro excised.
My print is badly damaged and looks to have been poorly printed.
Upload #2 of 'Triumph'-- Fixed aspect ratio, made small framing fixes and attempted further cleanup.
