- Since we all know that buying droids from Jawas is bad news, I found an awesome 3D model online and I'm going to show you how to paint and weather your droids!
It's easier than you'd think and can be done with items around the house. So follow along as I paint two IG-88 droid heads and weather them to look like they're right out of Star Wars.
Be sure to head over to The Smuggler's Room to see how Brian finished the projects: • Star Wars Cantina | IG...

These came out fantastic my friend. Thank you so much for working with us on this project!!!
Any time! Hopefully we can team up again in the future.
Hello Brian
Smuggler brought me here. Thanx for the collaboration!
Thanks for coming
I love the window cleaner added to the acrylic paint ideal! Can't wait to try that technique. Thanks for sharing.
I learned that one from Gordon Tarpley. Works great!
Nice work Derek love all the layers of paint and watching the process. If you ever want to learn a fun technique for making realistic battle damage and bullet holes. We can go out in the desert with a few of my go to aging tools and go to town on a couple projects. 😆👍
Hahaha
I know this is for technique but videos like this really make me want to build Star Wars props I don't need😁🙄
SAME
HAHAHAHAHA!
😂😂😂
The chubby geek was right on the money... Beautiful job - I look forward to exploring your work further. Keep building and I will keep watching.
Awesome, thank you!
Very Cool! Nice collaboration!
Thanks a lot!
AWESOME shading job, with just that first coat of acrylic, right after the chromed lacquer?! And then the thin wash after the initial bit of acrylic?! I love it that you are darkening the texture right in its groves, and the lower details just right underneath those details! But now, this head won’t be truly finished until you’ve made the rest of the whole IG-88, no? Maybe better not to chance being evaporated by the thing once he comes to!! This is a really great tutorial video, especially for demonstrating the slight differences in your plan to reveal just how those different techniques effect the outcome. THANKS FOR SHARING!!
This is awesome! Love the super 77 and windex methods!
My two favorite makers together for a project. This is as exciting as the Mandalorian S2 finale.
Haha. Thanks, Mark! Glad you enjoyed it.
A smuggler sent me here and I am glad he did.
Cool stuff you have!
Thanks for coming
The glass cleaner weathering is just magic!!
Thanks for sharing!
You bet!
The weathering came out great!
Thanks! I'm really pleased with both of them.
I would have never thought to use spray adhesive! Great technique. Loved the intro. LOL
It’s a good one for giving a light or heavy surface texture and is only of my favorites.
I'm really impressed by both finished pieces. You've truly given them the look of metal.
Thanks!
More great painting and weathering techniques. Thanks !
You bet! Thanks for checking it out.
New Subscriber. I love how this turned out and will be watching more of your videos to learn.
Thanks for subbing!
My hat is off to you. Beautiful work. Thank you for being so candid, and also thanks for the links. It takes courage and time and I appreciate both. The surprise was your collaboration with The Smuggler's Room. Bonus Fries!!
Thanks, buddy!
That texture!!!
Yeah, it's chunky!
You make it look SO easy!
You can do it too!
This was so helpful - going to watch it again!
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome job Derek!
Thanks!
WOW! Great job Derek! Amazing texture!!
Thanks!!
These both came out fanTAStic! Obviously I just found you from having watched The Smuggler's Room, hehe.
Welcome!!
So cool man, great tips! Awesome Collab!
Thanks! It was a fun one, for sure.
You wear the best damn hats.
Hahaha
Love these techniques! Very useful to add to many various projects!
Thanks so much!
They both look great. the powdered wood putty is an interesting technique.
Yeah, an imagineer said they'd used sawdust but I didn't have any on hand. So I went with the next best thing.
Thanks for the great video! This will help me out with my Droid Division IG!
No problem!
Awesome tutorial!!
Glad you liked it!
Fantastic job as always my friend I love the "powdered wood putty" idea.. i have typically used sand or saw dust in the past but love the uniformity of this idea!!
Thanks! It was somewhat of a last minute choice, but was the only thing I had on hand that was similar to saw dust and since that's basically what it is, I figured I would give it a try. Thankfully it worked.
I used to use that same weathering texturing method you guys did in this video....but with real dirt 😄
Nice! Whatever gets the job done, right?!
This looks Really Awesome and the weathering is very realistic and Really Cool!!!
Thank you very much!
Amazing explanation on applying paint. The results look incredible.
Thanks for checking it out!
Hello your project looks amazing 😎
Thank you!
Absolutely love this collaboration! Two of my favorite youtube content creators getting together. Nice work @VanOaksProps and @TheSmugglersRoom Awesome build yall!
Thanks!!
@@VanOaksProps absolutely!
Nice work, new sub as well. Came over from the smugglers room.
Thanks for the sub!
So awesome! I need to watch your videos to get better at painting...such a cool trick with the powder. They came out awesome! really love your windex routine! Your channel is truly a how-to and I hope to learn alot from you! PEACE!
Thanks!!
This makes me really want to get my 3D printer working. Nice work!
You should!
God knows I love me some Winded too!
Windex is great
@@VanOaksProps O Lord Derek, it's obvious that I was "Winded" when I meant Windex.... or was I Windexed...a mystery for the ages I guess or just auto correct, the world will never know.
I've never tried the spray adhesive for texture. I usually go to the texture spray paint for my base before painting.
It's similar, just not as "sandy."
Subbed!!!!
Welcome!
i cant wait to try the spray adhesive trick, how much time do you have to let it cure for before doing the gloss black... Awesome video and collaboration
Great question. It can vary based on the weather, but typically I found that you can paint over it in about 15 to 20 minutes.
Enjoy the channel. Subbed 😊
Welcome aboard!
The Alclad chrome paint holds up OK to the weathering process without a sealer over it? Beautiful work!
Yeah. No issues and thank you!
Cool
awesome tips, thanks! Would tiling grout work as well as powdered wood putty?
In theory, yes. I’ve never tried it though.
@@VanOaksProps thanks :-)
hey - got a question about glass cleaner - would you see any advantages to using this with other acrylic paints also? Thank you.
Absolutely.
One more question - can you talk about the brand of acrylic paint you started with the windex mix? Thanks. edit- unless it's the same brand shown at 8:50?
All of the acrylic paint I use is from Plaid Craft/Plaid FX.
LETS GOOOOOOO
When doing the window cleaner with paint technique, what type of paint did you use? Like acrylic, oil based, water based, etc.
Everything, aside from the spray paint and the Alclad II, is acrylic.
@@VanOaksProps thank you so much!
Super 77 is the only spray adhesive I vouch for and recommend.
In terms of spray paint, have you experimented with spray tips? I was gifted a bunch of high-end graffiti paint and tips, and it was fun to play with!
Also, that brand-name blue window cleaner is a beautiful paint drip maker! The way the paint runs is more “natural” than just spraying with water.
For a sec, I forgot this wasn’t metal, it kinda looks like a weird and elaborate rocket stove 😂
In my formative years I may or may not have been a graffiti artist. ;-)
@@VanOaksProps I should have known! Graphic designers want to try everything! 😂🤘🏼I haven’t ever blown glass, that’s the one “art form” or medium I’m obsessed with that I’d like to try.
Yep! Gotta fill up that mental reference library. I'm legitimately a jack of all trades, master of none. Which is a blessing and a curse but it gives you all something to watch every week. haha
@@VanOaksProps I’ve constantly called myself a jack of all trades- master of a few 😂 we have to be really good at one thing, I’ve also said I’m a chameleon and can adapt to any creative environment. But what is it about “the next project” that draws us to something else entirely?
Hi Derek
One question, your IG-88 head in the video seems a little shorter than the thingiverse model
Did you cut in some was the IG88-head_-_bottom.stl file?
TIA
Yes. I removed part of the bottom.
@@VanOaksProps good to read that, I will follow your steps, jejeje 😉
Thanks, and best regards from 🇦🇷
So Bill Hargreaves stated IG-88 was painted black, but because of the lighting on set, it made him look shiny and subsequently everyone has since assumed he was gunmetal colored. Have you tried replicating IG in Black?
I have not. This is one of those times where you have to decide whether you want to achieve the look seen on screen or what the actual part looks like to the naked eye on set. For me it’s always been about replicating the on screen version.
I think the other reason people assume it’s a chrome or gunmetal finish is because the Derwent flame canister is chrome.
Awsome job what paint do you used
Thanks! All the paints are listed in the video description.
Nice builds.
Great weathering technique.
But, you too, have no dents or scratchmarks on your „used“ builds!?
Greetings from Munich, Tom.
True. The beauty of all of this is it can look however you want. So it's completely up to the maker. Thanks for watching!
but does it make espresso?
Ha! I wish.
