  • Nix mangiari stairs "Nothing to eat!" For several decades, during the early British occupation, these steps were the haunt of all sorts of Maltese beggars. Those who braved these steps, only to be pulled and prodded by eager hands and shouts of 'Nix mangiari, nix mangiari' (Nothing to eat, nothing to eat) With no work and no income, how did the Maltese survive at all? “They live by fishing, begging

    Great video, Steve. We call this "history from below," and it does often get forgotten, or even suppressed. In recent years, it has become an important historical speciality.

    Loved it Steve! I really love hearing about the history of different areas.When you mentioned "tal pepe" it took me back to when i visited Malta with my mum and dad back in 1979, mum used to say she was referred to as Tal Pepe.Now, I know what that means thanks to you! She was from Senglea when she was single and my dad from Cospicua. Ive been back to Malta 4 times since then.Cant wait to be able to come back again.

    Hi Steve. As always I wait for your videos. So interesting I must say. I used to work in a small hotel above Victoria gate for 9 and a half years. beautiful area. Nix Mangaris sairs is very famous in legend Maltese books. The story goes that a beggar (one of tens) used to shout Nix Mangaris (a hosh posh of Nothing to eat). one night a number of drunk service men made fun of this poor beggar. They turned violent and eventually killed him. Some people claim that at night they saw this beggar stlll shouting Nix Mangaris. Thats the story I know about it. But anyway thanks so much.

    Been all around that area but didn't know that the stairs had a history. One thing that we were told about all the steps in Valletta is that they date back to the time of the Knights. With long, low steps they found it easier to get get up and down them while wearing their heavy armour.

I must comment on one thing though " The British came and educated the Maltese about drains etc.".....don't make me laugh.....Malta was a Roman province 1800 years before the British arrived, we had drains while you guys were living in round houses/mud huts running around painting yourselves blue and attacking the Romans.... who educated YOU ;) Don't forget even as late as 1666, the great fire of London and the black death Londoners used to throw their excreta out of first floor windows to the open gulley drain in the middle of the road below ;) Just saying..

    Well, well, well. Forget about the locals "throwing the you know what into the sea", I suggest you need brushing a little bit of history, Know what? Valletta's sewage system is unique, in that it is constructed as an open sewage system. Besides, underneath, in each and every corner or cross roads road names still exists (of course in Italian) from the time the Sovereign Military Hospitalier Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta. Thank you.

    • @EnglishmaninMalta
      @EnglishmaninMalta  3 года назад

      I Was talking about the start of a modern sewage system, when the british came ? never to profess to be an historian, But I attended a lecturer, Architect Edward Said and said When the British came to Malta, they found that the drainage system installed by the Knights had degenerated and was a hazard health. and most locals just bypasted the drainage system and would thrown directly into the sea , Which was what the old system did anyway ? The Knights’ system used no water for flushing and human waste flowed down by means of gravity, coming out from holes in the bastions and flowing It was said that the stench was terrible all across Grand Harbour. Such a system may have been a contributing factor to the 1813 plague, which took at least 8,000 lives.down to the sea. This what I remember anyway !!

    • @vincentciliberti5026
      @vincentciliberti5026 3 года назад

      @@EnglishmaninMalta All I can state is that till this very day, the sewage system installed by the knights is still the one being used. The stench can still be witnessed when the wind is in between North East to South West emanating from the grills in the lower parts of Old Mint Street.

    So Steve I had to stop the film as it seems as of late you are pushing the be ashamed of things done a long time ago, at the time of wich you seakbegging and such poverty was worldwide London was a city of beggars ,malta was no differant for being under British protection ,protection they asked for to rid themselves of the French, the Maltese begged for the British to stay and yes as was the world over the used it as they will, as a huge dock for war ships controlling the med,this making present day people with much different values feel in some way responsible for there actions at that time is a tactic of the left and is a marxist thing,think blm saying I should feel guilty for my great grandad being a dick ,if he was ,no sorry that begging was not confined to malta and it still isn’t ,go to Paris or London my word there everywere ,sorry bit of a rant am sure the history will be explained you always do

    • @EnglishmaninMalta
      @EnglishmaninMalta  3 года назад

      Not pushing anything, why ashamed of things done!!, it's all part of maltese history ? It's also true history is interpreted in different ways, was only two videos, I guess you are talking about ? it's just how the videos drops ?? But Read the history of british colonialism malta, was not all strawberry and cream ? and most was the top ranks, money and greed like it always is ? , True many maltese merchants also cause poverty in Malta, However, Maltese patriots felt cheated because they wanted Malta to be ruled by a Maltese elected assembly and the role of the British would have been only that of protectors of the islands. but it did not work out like this ??

      Sorry bud did not meen to rant but it was a bad time and we need to learn about it,but I feel we have learned a lot from them times and have changed for the better just lately certain folk seem to believe we,me ,you all of us must feel guilty for things we would not allow now, every nation has its bad history even the Maltese but that does not meen we should be held accountable,anyway it was a terrible time all round, and still is in some parts,still love malta always will
