Rolling Hitch, the proper way of doing it

That's the most effective way of doing the rolling Hitch, one of the most useful knots on a sailing boat.

Very useful.
There are other knots that are more reliable and offer better friction especially with different sizes of line. The klemheist, iceicle knot, blake hitch, prusik.
They are all worth knowing and have advantages. Many from climbing uses. Some known as sui-slides!
If you need to get up a mast without climbing hardware know your knots
.
Helpful for recovering a degloved halyard in the middle of a passage you will quickly find the limits.
In this case the outer went at a clutch and we needed tension back in the main.
Several knots later we had one that worked.
Most friction hitches work best with a smaller second line.
The most reliable ones use a loop, or line with two eyed ends and so involve a connector too.

I just use a hitch with two coils (towards the side of the pull)... over both and finish it on the other side of the working end. Works every time

There are a few variations that work as well but the original is the way I show it and it works like that without the last hitch so you can release it easily
