  • In this video Ben Bowley, Clipper Race Chief Instructor goes through how to tie a rolling hitch. A rolling hitch is used to attach a rope to another rope so that it grips it. It is used to take the strain of a line that is fouled.
This video is one of a series of videos produced to complement and support the Clipper Race training programme. A playlist of all the videos can be found here: • Clipper Race Training

Thank you for showing the mechanism of how a rolling hitch works. You showed that there can be more than 2 round turns which is typically taught. You did 4 round turns. What is worthy to remember is the direction of the load that is intended is on the side of the 2 or more round turns.

Really good - thanks for the excellent share. Needed it last night when we got an anchor line for a racing mark wrapped around the rudder, in big current. So much tension on the anchor line, ended up having to cut the line. We salvaged both the mark and anchor, but didn't get to the finish line before the race timed out.

That was the sccond most useful knot on our boat after the bowline

Why did you change the camera angle? You shielded the knot and what you were doing with you left hand.

Thank you. I got my snake line stuck in a drain and I will try to use this method to tie into a winch.

If you have a riding turn and the winch is completely jammed you need far more tension on the second line to ease the strain on the jammed line………..?

It isn't a piece of line, it's a line; albeit s short one.

If you can't follow that then don't watch any other knot-tying videos.
