Wow. The symbolism in this film is so good. This is what I've taken from the film. Roger is a piece of Elise's past that she wants to keep. We can see her holding Roger tight when she goes into their new apartment. When Roger turns into a fish, she then asks help from her parents. What I saw with her parents, they didn't question one bit why their child was holding a fish instead of a cat :) I think this is because some things happened that way to them. Some things changed to fit in their present life. So Elise took it upon herself to "fix" Roger. When she was put in a place where she had to pick between saving Roger the fish or the cat, she looked at them but I guess she chose to reminisce her past. Then it all got suffocating. She then went back to save the fish. Going back home realising that she has to live with this new creature (accepting her past and that she can't change anything.) I don't know if it makes sense but I thought I'll share. :))))

also the bus on 1:34 says “404” those numbers means “not found” and i think it’s an easteregg that symbolizes the loss of her cat that she keeps trying to find but it’s gone now

he didnt turn into a fish literally, he died and the fish was a new pet. she didnt want to leave her old home because she felt like she was losing her original roger, she didnt want to move on

I love the detail of Elise walking through her 'ghost self' (5:01) as she tries to save fish-Roger; as if she's accepted that the past is the past and moves on to the present :)

My fish died recently so this was very relevant to me :(. the reference to the other film at 3:32 is very good! The animation and story is very well made and pretty

I've noticed a tiny symbolism with Elise's hair. Throughout most of the story, her pigtails resemble (and even behave like) two cat ears, reflecting how she's most comfortable with Roger as he was, and refuses to accept Roger's new form. But after her experiences in the story, (4:59) her pigtails each split to resemble tail fins of a fish, marking the instant she wants to accept Roger, no matter what he becomes.
Great catch🎣Not a lot of people noticed but we did feel very clever when we put in that detail!
The Easter egg of the previous film in the story the mom tells is genius
The colors are lovely! Esp in those scenes where the sun lights the inside of the house.
Omg I guess I get it, the cat turns into fish, then into parrot and turtle, as the girl grows up! She doesn’t want to let go her childhood in the old home and tries to make fish turn into cat again, but time can’t be turned back
And the good things we have may change form and that's okay. If we cling too hard to how things used to be and reject what they've become instead of valuing how they are now, we might risk losing them completely
She wanted the ideal so much that she neglected reality. But when she got it, she realised she it's not what she wanted.

If it is, great detail! We'd be making a mistake trying to return to realities that are gone. Accept it's gone and embrace the new "Roger".

In my mind, lt shown that is a period of time when she's expresses grief or sorrow for a loss of the house , also the death of a loved that specific animal and how handle it
I just realised that Roger is probably dead, and it's not like he turned into a fish right in her hands, her parents might have told her so to make it easier for her to accept that he's gone. And that's why they weren't surprised at all with this fact.
Or maybe not and he actually turned into a fish
So my assumption is that Roger her original cat didn't literally turn into a fish, her cat died/Ran away and to replace him she got a fish and to cope she is believing that her cat magically turned into a fish making this whole short an allegory for the loss of a pet and the change of times.

The parents not reacting to the cat turning into a fish is quite stupid.
that's because it's symbolism, it's not meant to actually represent the cat turning into a fish, rather a sudden change, something new and maybe unwanted, for instance getting a new pet fish after losing your pet cat, or moving to a new home, and your parents being completely oblivious to how you feel about it, I understand this deeply as when I had to move out of my old home of 5-ish years (I was about 11 at the time so I'd lived in that home almost half my life) I felt very uncomfortable with that change, and my sibling even more so, most parents let that discomfort go unnoticed, but my parents took the time to talk with us about it and do their best to make us comfortable as we moved
