Can someone explain to me how immigration in the US works as this and some comments are extremely confusing. I live in Europe, never been to the US hence maybe my confusion. In Europe once a legal migrant comes in, they need to register themselves with the authorities, they get a visa. If they work or study they immediately get a temporary residential permit which, if they continue working or studying, and they can document that, will be renewed for 1 year and after that for either up to 3 or 5 years. How is it possible that in the US you can work for years and not get a green card or a resident permit???
These are illegal immigrants. The process you describe is for legal immigrants which these people are not. Don’t people get deported from your country for being there illegally?
The US has an exceptional amount of visas, asylumees, greencard-holders and illegal immigrants (harbored by governors who hate the populace). The system is backed up from all of these things. No country on the planet has taken in more people than the US by a large distance. People can continue to renew visas and sometimes that is more financially viable. Sometimes people are on probation for violating their visa or because of a misdemeanor. Marriage Greencards I think require 5 years before they are stable. There are many reasons for delay. If counted separately, the foreign-born legal citizens living in the US would be the 30th biggest nation on earth. Who knows how big the illegal immigrant nation would be. But it must be so big that the Biden Admin found it perfectly acceptable to give those caught illegally crossing a 5 year wait until their trial.
