  • Really very new to the Grundig 2x4 V2000 machines having worked on a few Philips machine over the years. Have had four of these machines for around 10 years in storage and now's the time to take a look at them.
    Had a few issues with the camera deciding to stop recording but the whole process is there.
    Belts are available from eBay from here:
    bit.ly/3cWezyG
    The quality is really good and I have bought several belt kits from here. Also has a pictoral version of how to change these belts.
    I noticed Video99 has a video on the same machine so go watch that too for extra tips and tricks on this machine:
    • Repairing the Grundig ...
    I think I fill in the gap with the capstan belt swap!
    Lots more to come on this great machine soon...

    Thank you for this video! In my Grundig 2x8 is also the capstan belt problem, as soon as i have time i shall try to replace it. Thanks.

      No problem my friend - just be sure the capstan flywheel is free too as the magnets can start to cause issues with rubbing.

    Thank you very much for this video! I was given a Grundig similar to this one and although I have never tried to repair VCRs, I decided to try to make it work. It was completely dead so I had nothing to lose. The first thing I did was replacing the power supply. After that and after cleaning a few contacts, it came to life. And although it now accepted tapes, the head drum seemed to be stuck: after switching the machine on, it made a brief attempt to rotate but immediately stopped. By sliding it manually I noticed some noise and too much difficulty to rotate freely. Trying to figure out how to take it apart in order to remove any dirt under the head, I lifted it once or twice, which I believe may have deformed a bit the internal spring. But then I discovered this video on RUclips and was finally able to take the head apart by first removing the motor cover from the bottom side of the machine while holding the head itself. After that I found that some small pieces of the head were actually broken, so I ordered a new head and cleaned the lower part of the cylinder. Now that I have the new head, I see that it only rotates smoothly as long as I do not place the motor cover back. If I do put it back, the head rubs the lower part of the cylinder and is not able to rotate smoothly. So, I have now tried to assemble it without the internal spring and it seems to rotate pretty smoothly (in fact, the VCR is now able to play tapes although I get a distorted picture, which maybe is due to the absence of the spring and the resulting misalignment of the head). Have you got any ideas about the possible cause of this problem? Does it make any sense that the spring got deformed either before or after I manipulated the head? In such case, is there any chance to get spare springs for replacement?? Thank you very much in advance.

      Hi, thank you for the comment. Reading through I can guarantee that the spring is fine and although the head drum feels fine running without it, it isn't the way to go. The problem you most likely have is the inductive material of the 'transformer' (the coils between the head drum and the lower drum assembly) have swelled causing them to foul. It's really very fiddly to do and there is a huge risk of damaging the coil but you can try and take a little material off the drum side to stop it fouling. A replacement good upper drum can also do the trick but ultimately it's not an easy one to sort reliably. Do comment back on how you get on and any thoughts...

      @mazochungo 4 года назад

      @@MrBetaByte Thank you very much for your suggestions. You are right, there was nothing wrong with the spring and all I had to do was to look for another replacement for the upper drum, as the replacement I had previously found turned out to be damaged. Fortunately I could find another one which I could mount with the spring, and that certainly improved the picture quality. However, from time to time and also depending on the tape, the picture became somehow unstable, so I had to disassemble and reassemble the drum again. I suspect there must be some issue or some loose adjustment in the position of the drum or the capstan. Nevertheless, recently I have been lucky enough to find a Philips V2000 machine which seems to work like a charm, so now there's no much need for me to get the Grundig completely repaired. Regards!

    Thanks so much for this video. I've had this model from new. It's been stored for years as it needs a new belt. It must be one of the few that is in Australia as I brought it over here in 2000.

    Great video, Grundig definitely didn't make it easy to change the capstan belt on that model. A few years ago I had one of the more basic 1600 models (top loader) and that wouldn't run. What I eventually discovered was one of those little magnets had become unglued so there were no pulses getting back to the system so it was shutting down. If I remember correctly it was on one of the reels rather than the capstan. A bit of superglue got it working again.

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  2 года назад

      Thank you :-) Yes, those magnets do seem to be dropping off or splitting as these machines age. I've even seen them go to dust - not easy to find replacements!

    Hello. Where is the record button on this VCR?

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  3 года назад

      That's actually very good question - I always use the remote which needs the add-on IR receiver unit and never really thought about direct recording on the machine itself. I'm going to get another 2x4 Super going soon so I'll investigate and let you know.

It is possible do this without remove anything on the drum / heads ? i dont want to fool around damage that / or dont want to touch it just incase.? . I have so far just tryed loosed and tight the bottom screw on the papst motor . AQnd great videos You do I t shows alot . Many cuts off importent steps and thats a shame its hard to learn then . Thank you :)

      @MrBetaByte  3 года назад

      Hi, Thanks for the question. You really need to remove the bottom of the head motor otherwise it's difficult to remove the capstan plate ad you could cause more damage by not doing so. I would always remove the static drain/ tracking contacts assembly and move it safely out the way before doing this - it is very fragile, especially the tracking brushes. Take it slowly and carefully and don't panic if you do knock the brushes.

      @@MrBetaByte Yes i did remove the bottom on the head motor . but i dident remove the the brushes on the top . i tryed my best not move the axle and drum .
      And i did clean the with alcohol ISO on the bottom off the rotating capstanaxle as you showed . with that electric part (not good on all english names on the stuff ) put in a new belt . and put all together and run smoth . & recapped most off the frako with Panasonic caps . all with same value .
      I do have som strange pulsing sound all the time when test on the TV I m not sure what it is . and i m not sure it was before . I did recap and belt at the same time . I m pretty new to this . I have test with Antenna cable And AV cable just to be sure . Guess i have to do a little video on it next week a quick demo . better to show then try to write :)

      @vvm2004 2 года назад

      @@stefancarlberg7806 Maybe it ist too late. But the pulsing sound is caused by an off center "Capstan Mäander-Lagerplatte", it is glued to the bottom plate of the capstan flywheel where the 2 cables are connected. You must center this plate (and not the metalplate!) with the capstan shaft! Nearly all Grundig V2000 and the first VHS-Series (VS2xx-Models) have that thing.

    Anyone knows where the battery is located (is it 3.6v?) that probably needs to be replaced in order to hold the correct time?

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  2 года назад

      The batteries are two standard PP3 batteries (making a total of 18v) that clip onto a circuit board at the back of the machine. The bit that sticks out the back actually opens up. Pull with quite a bit of force to lift the top section off to gain entry.
