    I mean nearly 1 1/2 months ago they had all dam still at the max capacity, even though they knew that the flood season was coming. Just to generate more money. And all the water stored in these dams causes huge amounts of water to evaporate, which led to a new climate in the region

  • @bdcochran01
    @bdcochran01 3 месяца назад +33

    Before the dam was completed, I met with officials at the Water Ministry. We discussed the dam. The construction of the dam had been mandated by the Party. It is not a process of decision like in the US.
    Understand that it is a different reality. There was no fast water rescue team operating on the river. The people who fell in were called "floaters". There was no plan for an emergency warning system down stream. The people did not own the land or there homes, they were simply moved away. If the silt removal calculations were correct and if there were enough money in the future and if dredgings were going to conducted as continuous operations, fine.
    The US Hoover damn was designed to withstand a 100 year flood. It appeared that the Three Gorges Dam was designed to withstand a 50 year flood and I believed that everyone in room was probably hoping to be retired before that test was presented.

      50 year flood, this is third flood like this in 3 years, China has had monsoonal rains and flooding for centuries, only exacerbated by the dams built because those in charge are paid in commission as to how much power they generate which is why dams don’t release floodwater earlier as that eats into profits. Also exacerbated by continued cloud seeding for god knows what reason and also because someone thought greening a desert was a good idea. Oh and don’t forget 3 gorges has also shifted earths rotation slightly and chinas continued reluctance to embrace any form of pollution management scheme resulting in continued and dramatic climate change. This flooding is a direct result of chinas ignorance. No surprise not a single country has offered any crisis or emergency assistance, as long as the Chinese believe the rest of the world is there to serve them, they can suffer on their own.

    This is a vast underestimation of how many flood control gates were open. Furthermore, the admins of the dam released the water of up to 11 openings without warning. If they government informs people of the water released, it makes it a planned event which then incurs compensation to those affected from the government, so local administrators release the water without warning to avoid the obligation of compensation. It's a shitshow. China has severe infrastructure problems and in China you can't discuss it publicliy. The government scrubs the internet whenever large events happen and don't allow it to be talked about critically in state media. The true extent of the infrastructure issues are hard to fully appreciate due to this clampdown. And if the three gorges damn fails, the casualties could be in the tens of millions due to the huge density in the area downstream.

    CCP's flood control measures fix many problems:
    1) We boost truck sales whenever we donate a dump truck into broken levees
    2) We remove excess sand when dumped into swollen rivers
    3) We save hundreds of Yuan by not using bags to store the donated sand
    4) We promote safety by waiting 'til the water levels are equal on either side of the breech. Rushing water is hazardous!

      @pennycandyys 2 месяца назад +1

      Your comment makes it seem like you lack understanding. Yes the weather was bad, but the major problems were not because of the weather, they were from keeping water levels too high in the dams in order to maximize power generation, and therefore cash generation. The choice to keep the water levels high is disastrous every year. When the heavy rains come, officials then must release floodwaters lest the dam fail.

    Somebody correct me if I am wrong, I'm no expert. given the consistency of the flooding over the past few years, wouldn't it make sense to lower the level of the dam reservoirs during the year so that they are able to take more of this heavy rainfall? I think I understand that electricity production would go down, but building more power plants ought to be a better alternative to this.
    at this point, people need to start building their houses like we do in South Louisiana. Up on stilts. based on the footage from these floods, stilt houses ought to do alright.

      A high water level generates electricity and money. When there is drought , the operators with private interests can sell tank load of water to farms generating money so there is no benefit to release water pre-flood. Take this business model and apply to all China managed dams like Mekong and beyond. ( weaponization of water part of Unrestricted Warfare ).

      Actually, that is one of the controversies regarding the building of dams in China. What you are seeing is horrible, yes. But before China built all of these dams, water flow in China actually caused LESS damage because nature created its own way of controlling excess water. China decided to find 'practical' ways of using river flows, like building hydroelectric dams and moving water from one place to a place that needed more water. But they've destroyed a lot of towns and villages in their efforts to control the flow of water. If you look at a world map of Asia, you'll see how some of China's dams also control the flow of water into other countries. There's been some talk of China weaponizing dams. Sigh.

It's a manifestation of the "egocentric" (ideology) (signs of death) that doesn't care what happens to others as long as one is happy... What can a gathering of bigwigs accomplish? It's only because of farmers who work and grow rice that we can eat, but bribes will cost us our lives... What's more... neglecting water, the most important thing for survival... It's so stupid... You have mutually exclusive competing uses for the dams. Power generation which needs to retain as much water as possible, flood control, keep the water level as low as possible till huge water flows necessitate retaining only as much water as will prevent flooding down stream, drinking water, retaining as much water as you need to have as much water as you need for consumption and retain water from wet years to save water for dry years. They are competing uses for the dams and it sounds like the dama weren't used successfully for any of the uses? Donate under a communist government. WTF does that mean?
