- This live recording premiered Sunday January 31, 10 am UK/Irish time, Andy was in the livechat. To download the concert audio in high quality, head to andywhiteireland.bandcamp.com where you'll also find copies of the original CD that Andy found under the stairs.
"New Year's Eve 2020, Sebastian and I went up to the studio to play my third album Himself all the way through, with Rod McVey beaming in from his basement studio in Holywood, County Down.
Himself was released in 1990 and we were going to play a special Belfast concert at the end of last year to celebrate the anniversary, but things got in the way.
We recorded it and filmed it on our phones. This is the first time I've played all the songs from start to finish. It was an emotional experience - Himself is a special album for me.
It's free, as always, but I'll be putting a full quality download of the audio on Bandcamp, and I have a box of original Himself CDs which will be there too.
Thanks for all your messages about the original album. It's a humbling experience hearing how your recordings enter other people's lives, in the same way as certain albums populate mine. I hope we've done it justice. We definitely had a good time. AW"
Andy White - vocal, guitar, bass pedals
Rod McVey - Hammond organ
Sebastian White - drums

Thanks for coming everyone (a) seems like a minute ago that we recorded the album and (b) this show went by in a flash ... sorry the chat was cut off but hey we'll do it again ... lots of love and look after yourselves x
I originally bought 'Himself' on tape and its still with me several broken tape machines later - such a gorgeous album. Thanks for swinging it live
"poverty strike struck stroll" beautiful writing
Ah Andy this is such a trip....brilliant. We used to go to every Belfast gig and annoy you by shouting for Visions of You....hard to escape your past.
it's a lucky past steve :) try this lyrics video! ruclips.net/video/kpRq9LWnO9Q/видео.html
Thanks Andy, beautiful live. Always a pleasure listening to you. I hope to see you live in Italy as soon as possible.
Really enjoyed that. I liked the fun you had with the 'you never fax!' line, which used to make me smile even when fax was still a thing!
brilliant. yes so glad all those bits we kept in!
Awesome keyboard! Great work, lads!
Thanks PR Rod is a legend :)
Freeze-out - brilliant!
Picked up Out There in a record shop in Pamplona, Spain about 30 years ago because the name rang a bell from back home. I still listen to regularly. It's such a great album. Been a fan ever since. Great video by the way.
Thanks Stephen it was quite an experience. Things connect - The Colour of Love was written one summer night in Vitoria-Gasteiz - every word is true! Great you've been there since those days. Rave on.
Himself has been one of my favourite albums for the last 30 years and you played it brilliantly. Thanks chaps.
thanks deebster, that means such a lot. I've played the bass pedals at some UK shows but it's way easier in the studio where they live :)
@@andywhitevideo You're very welcome. Just in case anyone's confused by the bass pedals bit, I'd edited my post to remove a question on if the bass was programmed (but I guess you got the original text in your notification Andy). I hadn't been looking closely enough and had missed the bass pedals shots. Nice footwork.
Here's my AW story. After a gig you did at a hotel in the arse end of Wolverhampton in 1996 (so much so I got lost on the way and arrived late) when you were signing my copy of Teenage you asked if I could give you a lift to Kings Norton, and I said I didn't know the way. Sorry Andy, whilst that was true I should've said yeah and just figured it out, then I would've had a much better story to tell.
@@deebstermac brilliant! pre-google maps experience ?!?!? :)
@@andywhitevideo Indeed, pre even getting an A to Z in the car.
Had a much easier job finding the Kitchen Garden Cafe last month though. A lovely intimate gig. It was me that asked you to play 20 Years, but I get why you didn't want to.
this is just fcking amazing..!!
still is now..
Top work lads, thanks a million. Himself really was 'the one' for me. I'd seen you supporting Nanci Griffith (RIP) in Coleraine Uni towards the end of 89, and already had Rave On and Kiss The Big Stone, so I was eagerly awaiting the album's release. To say I wasn't disappointed would be something of an understatement. Perhaps it's because I was born in Malone Place, right on the corner of Sandy Row, but have spent most of my life 'exiled' in Derry, that I felt a real connection to it which endures today. I may even have had something in my eye while listening to Birds of Passage, but it's just as well you left out the bonus track Travelling Circus or I might have lost it altogether! Ah, young love in the second Summer of Love, 1990. Thanks again for all the years of pleasure.
Thanks this means a lot to me. Not least because we were born in exactly the same place! Both my sisters too ... I was thinking of the Nanci Griffith the other week, of course, so thanks for reminding me we played NUU.
The stories people have experience around Himself are part of what makes it a special album for me and, yes, there are moments of big emotion in this performance, planned for Belfast last December but it's been great putting it out there. See you again I am sure, take care & Rave On! AW
A very important record for me for a couple of reasons: Six String Street is just one of the best tunes anybody ever wrote ever, and Birds of Passage has the definitive description of how it felt to me to grow up in Northern Ireland between the mid-70s and mid-80s: 'Wanting to leave is like learning how to breath'. Still and always a lyric I wish I'd written and one I quote to people repeatedly (sorry, people). Of course others had different experiences, some much more difficult than mine, and different opportunities. But there was something here I related to, and I still do. Thanks. Andy
Thank you for letting us know Ferg. It's been amazing finding out where the songs and lyrics ended up ... and still live. :)
Sounds great
great to 'see' you Frauke - so many northerners there!!!
Oh wow! I couldn't be here for the live event, I was still working the overnight here in the USA. Home now and taking a peek, and wow! You make it sound as fresh and exciting as it was day one. Groovy Kind Of Way!!! Love this album. (Andy Nagy)
thanks Andy and for your note - CD's on its way tho may take forever! Yeah great night ...
So cool! Thanks for doing this!
our pleasure Rob thanks for coming!
One of my favourite albums of all time, and the first one of Andy’s I bought. £6.99 from Andy’s (!) records.
on the market stall? my Nick Drake albums from there :)
Cowp!
Got into Andy White in the very early nineties thanks to a song called The Pale Moonlight that a local indie radio kept playing - it totally echoed the situation I was going through with my girlfriend at the time it was scary !
Ahhhhnton I love these stories!!! where were you? it's right here ...
@@andywhitevideo I was living in Switzerland at the time (still am ;-)) - never got a chance to catch you live though...much to my disappointment...
@@AntonMuller yes DRS-3 and Couleur 3 were the reason I got to go there. Amazing. Heard this song on top of a mountain playing in Haute Nendaz for C3 ... unforgettable.
@@andywhitevideo same here, in fact I still have some recordings of that Nendaz session on tape somewhere! Saw the Himself LP in a record shop one day as a teenager but didn't have enough cash, so ran 5km to get some before the store closed (didn't make it :). Pale Moonlight still sends shivers. Got a couple hard-to-find CDs years later when visiting Ireland.
@@sylvaingarde5123 One of the best things about playing Himself again was hearing stories about how people first discovered it or got hold of a copy. I found a box of the original under the stairs and that led to this. Everything connects - thanks Sylvain!
Love it Andy !! Still got my original vinyl signed by you on release day in Good Vibrations, Gt Victoria Street !
wow Michael - fantastic - what date I'd love to know!
@@andywhitevideo i will try and find out , you did a little acoustic set from behind the counter
Bra-vo ... still sounding mighty. And that t shirt. Is that george best as che guevara?
You got it in one! There was a lot of chat about the T shirt. Che Best! :)
please do rave on live :)
Thanks, appreciated, yeah we'll keep doing this ...
@@andywhitevideo needs to be done.. :)
@@TheWeardale1 we did it!
@@andywhitevideo yep, amazing it was too!!
When do we do another Early Album ?
