I was living in Japan in the '80's. I love Japanese music. I got to see Miki twice in live performance; once in a concert hall in Tokyo -- I will never forget it. I was in the 4th row center. She came on stage and started singing her opening song, and she looked at me, and kept her eyes on me for about the first minute of the song. I was frozen, afraid to move or smile, I don't know why she looked straight at me for so long, but it was magical! I saw her again in a small club in Shinjuku. I love her music, she is one of my favorite singers. My favorite song by her is "Hello Walls". Her death was so tragic and sad. I keep candles burning for her (and Minako Honda) in a chapel on Lilith SIM in Second Life. I also have a memorial for them in my home in Second Life. RIP Miki and Minako
Love the stay with me song but i hate it a bit cuz' I can't sleep remembering my old memories with my parents with this song in my head stuck, I try forgetting the music, I just can't. I cry silently at the night, I'm 11 years old, my family is still alive but I cry from them mostly loving me before when I was 5.

I think her story almost being a mystery really does capture the 1980s japan where the bubble era now only lives in the memories for those who lived in that era.
I just hope they don't do a very bad translation or impose some ideology on their misinterpretation of the letter. I'm shocked how much people distorted what she said, I think the documentary about her and mainly seeing what her parents said about this final stage of her life make it way more easy to understand her words, which the translations we have online are very obscure. I mean, there is not great content on english about her, it all resurfaced recently and the translations are very poor. So there is a lot of misinformation about this.
Probably the problem arose from the fact that people struggle understand her reasoning for burning her music related stuff. Which is just that it was holding her back so she could move on with dealing with her condition. Which to me seems very understandable when you love something so much and you can't accept you are not able to keep doing that.

Miki blamed her illness on her music career. About a year before her death in 2003, Miki burned some of her favorite songs and pieces she had composed. She wished that nobody would listen to her music and said she regretted her career as a whole.
A lot of terminal ill patients cope blaming themselves, the she was also a perfectionist... But at the end that is what she always wished to do and it's not like music gives you cancer. "If only we could hug her and say that her muisc is priceless"...

Yea, it is a bad translation and interpretation that spread online about her letter, the translation people spread is not that bad, it is kind of good, but if you don't go deep and interpret any way you want then people spread the wrong idea about it and just accept like it is true. I recommend watching the japanese TV report that was made 4 years after her death, it becomes more clear. But idk, I think people just have struggle to interpret stuff when it is not 100% clear in their language or something, I can't believe honestly that people interpreted it so badly like the comments that the video presented.
Btw, I think the problem arose from the fact that she burnet her music related stuff. People struggle to understand her reasoning with that and then top that with the bad translation of the letter.
For your work to bring joy millions of lives during and after you are gone, what can be better than that... Her perfection lives on and will transcend time.. Thanks for the video...

Her letter was misinterpreted, I mean it was random comments on RUclips videos that said she regretted it, it is better to look at the original stuff by yourself. I can't fathom how people interpreted it that badly, honestly. I think the problem arose from the fact she burnt her music stuff, people struggled to understand that I think, I mean people from the West particularly.

Maybe she taking drug on party or anywhere else. And again , I believe she did not do these things. Rest in peace 80s pop queen.
Miki didn’t regret singing, she regretted making singing the only thing she did 24/7. She regretted not doing anything other than singing !! please don’t spread the rhetoric of her not liking singing !! -

I also believe in that, but I think pascal did not show every side or interpretation in the video like he said above. It was a random comment in a video, if you see everything that her parents said on japanese TV it becomes much more likely it was not the case that she regretted singing or working with music at all, that theory comes from the reading literally the translation in english of the letter and not understanding her reasoning for burning her music related stuff, which is very simple to understand in my opinion, because when you have a terminal cancer and has little to no hope to be cured and you are a very independent hard-working person with a passion, it is really hard to accept the disease if you cling to your passion, so naturally you have to let go of that so you can move on. This became clear to me because this is the reasoning of her mother, but her mother could just be coping, yes, that would be another way to look at it and theorize. I think it matter that people be careful with this because it can make people refrain to listening her music and even feel bad listening to her music, which is totally possible. So I understand why you saying this. while it is true that is impossible to be 100% certain of any interpretation yes, it is important to be careful with the subject anyway and show all possible interpretations of her actions/words. But it goes without saying that japanese are very confidential with their personal lives so there would be no way we could know and it doesn't matter was well at some extent, I just think it is not a good thing that people spread this type of information if it can make feel bad to listen to her music if there is a quite high chance that it was a complete misinterpretation.

The comments about the letter are almost totally wrong (btw I acknowledge totally that it is not pascal fault at all, just to be clear), they probably seen a very bad translation of it and misinterpreted, I have been studying japanese for some times and I can say with 100% certainty that it is crazy how easily it is to misinterpret japanese leading to bad translations, not only the structure of the language is completely different from almost every western languages (like the particles stuff for instance has very few counterparts on german and ancient greek and stuff like that) the way they talk is so ambiguous and kind of "poetic" honestly, when they express anything it rarely clear cut and obvious which has to do with their culture and the language itself because of kanji and how a single word can mean many things, the "regret" she felt was mostly due that she loved music so much and wanted yet to do so many things that it was unbearable, so she burnt all the music stuff she had, knowing she would probably soon die since prospects were not good she couldn't move on to deal with the disease if she was clinging to her passion, she also mentioned she wanted to "reset" her life but this is a bad translation because she meant something more akin to "begin anew" if she somehow managed to get cured from the cancer, which we don't know if she meant she wanted to take a break for music and have children or whatever, but seeing everything that her parents said about her last moments (she could very well meant "start again", where she left and not like starting a new different life), she still wanted to compose music and was really sad about it, even her mother says that she burnt her music related stuff because she wanted to keep doing music and it was not the opposite at all, but you can be 100% sure she didn't mean "reset" her life literally as well as some people think, which would be ridiculous and show how bad translation can go a very long way in people reading it literally, like when she said wished she had lived in a different way, she meant that about the life style, how she carried her career in music, but she never regretted doing music, not at all, it was her dream all along. I honestly think that she just wanted to keep working with music forever, she was very conscientious, independent and disciplined, she probably hated to be sick and basically impaired by it. I think it is important to be careful with this letter because it might make people refrain from listening to her stuff or feel bad while listening to it, although she did mention to the person she meant the letter for to forget her music, one has to understand how frustrated she was that it ended like this and had terminal cancer, so she was "depressed" like in every instance of terminal cancer. But when you analyze the entire letter it becomes clear, at least to me, that she was basically saying that her music and the frustration she was feeling reminded her of the disease and that she wouldn't be able to die in peace and that she was blaming her lifestyle or something, I mean having cancer on uterus might be caused by HPV but this is pure speculation, what matters is the distinction of what she was talking about. But the important thing is that she never said that she regret her music, but her life style. Honestly, it is only possible to be certain if one could talk to a native that know about her and stuff and explains the letter, and it has to be a native for sure, because the culture play a huge factor when understanding japanese. It is crazy how much it play a factor honestly because the language keep a lot of, for instance, collective conformity of the culture in it.
