    This weeks woodworking joint is the traditional Japanese Scarf Joint. I use a combination of hand and power tools to cut it and it’s actually easier than you think. It’s a beautiful decorative joint used in furniture, timber framing, and so many other applications. It takes some practice but it teaches you how to use templates and chisel ultra accurately. It is an incredible way to practice super accurate joinery techniques. Let me know in the comments what joint you’d like to see next week. Thanks for watching! Please like, comment and subscribe. Cheers!

    I love that this joint can be used to make huge beams as well as the small one you made. Do you think it would be possible to make a series of them - one on either side of each half of the joint so that they all join together to make a repetitive pattern kind of like an Escher woodcut?

    Do a butt joint you knucklehead and do it using any tools that work for you including rocks or laser cutters. I don't understand why some people get hung up on how things are made...just make em and move on

  • @jimmypai2470
    @jimmypai2470 2 года назад +1

    Good wok Jonathan. Just to point out this joint strictly speaking should be Okkake (大栓継), and used to joint long scarf.
    A Kanawa Tsugi (金輪継) has finger joint at the tip adding strength against twisting/sheer forces, and therefore can be used in vertical support.

  • @DIYHGP
    @DIYHGP 5 лет назад +19

    I thought the whole purpose of the scarf joint was to use it with large timbers, thus no glue and all handtools or handheld power tools. Wedges should be designed to hold a scarf joint tight.

    Dunno if this will be any help, but for routing, I've found the Whiteside Ultimate Trim router bits to be amazing. They're chunky solid carbide jobbies with dual up and down spirals. I make guitars, and I can run these things round the headstock totally ignoring grain direction with no risk of them pulling chunks out due to going against the grain. Really have been a revelation for me.

    Well done but kind of an insult to that ancient joint if you use glue! Examples of it can be found in Japanese temples over 2000 years old. Tightly crafted joints with wedges and pegs but no glue.

    Hey man I love the channel! Super high quality filming and your editing is spot on.
    I want to offer some constructive feedback though on the way you transition verbally. Almost every time you go to a new step, you say “ok let’s go over to [insert tool] and get it started!”
    I think it’s natural to speak like that, especially because you film it in hours, but it’s presented in minutes, and those awkward transitions make it feel clunky.
    Maybe it’s just my preference, but I would really like it if you just said what you were going to do and then showed the clip doing it, and didn’t have to insert a “transition phrase” to get us there.
    Anyway, love the videos, I’m glad I found you, and I’m excited to see where your channel goes!

      I really want to learn. And do it right. I have a creative mind. I needed to take a back seat to life while I got my family grown and on there own feet, by becoming a State worker. My Daughters are doing good. Bank President, and the other in charge of food services for a large school district. And My wife is a Veterinarian. I am retiring in 65 days. But who is counting. Some 40 years ago I took wood shop in school and I loved it. I have been dreaming of retiring and creating my own shop some day. Looks like I just might get to try it. If you are just starting? what tools would you think will help me get going. I have a few things. Table saw, Drip press, Joiner, Router, Pocket jig, and a few others. I have them because I build model Train layouts from time to time when I have time.

    Can you cut this but also with the tenon on the front face of this scarf joint timberframehq.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/scarf-joint-for-a-timber-frame-576x1024.jpg
    That additional cut prevents sliding in the other axis.
    I know, it's a minor modification; it's just such an amazing joint because it resists shear in all four directions, twisting, bending, compression, and tension-it's strong in every direction, just like solid timber.
    Also: can you cut it in place with only portable tools, no tables, just as if you've got a piece of pressure-treated post cemented into the ground and now you want to join a ten-foot non-treated post above grade? ;) Real-world application, you know.
