    The house seems to be protected from the wind by the barns at its east and north side, and gets sun from the south and the west. Is the winter climate rough, with a lot of cold northernly and easterly winds? Back in 1700`s the owners probably wanted to reduce the wind chill and conserve on firewood?

    Hi Carl Rogers, live in France myself, have also renovated A-Z my house 3 years ago.
    Like your renovation style, looks like you know what you're doing!
    Good luck, will fallow your channel closely.

      Looks like they dont. Removing a single abestos slate on a roof like that is worth thousands of euros in fine. I cant imagine how much for the whole. Look for Fibro ciment french régulation...

    • @alexeiouspenski5302
      @alexeiouspenski5302 3 года назад

      @@manunumber12 I don't see what's wrong: they do not cut it, so no dust. It is solid plates, not "flocage"
      in France as a private person you are allowed to dismount your asbestos plates by yourself and where the protection you want. Before disposal you just need to cover the plates right (in a thick plastic film) and to dispose it at a specialized facility.
      The regulations are indeed much more strict, when you're doing the same thing as a professional company.

    • @manunumber12
      @manunumber12 3 года назад

      @@alexeiouspenski5302 well, my bad, it is all about local authorities and neighbours then. I can assure you that they are fussy here, let s say one needs to lockdown the aera before considering replacing a single Fibro ciment plate.

    I think the old canopies of the roof were made of asbestos tiles.

    As usual Carl you make it look easy! I am changing the rafters ( after supporting the roof of course ) internally as the roof can't be stripped, too much rain in Ireland! Did you just use muck to make up the gap in the second beam and did you put a couple of tiles in with it?
    Look forward to the next episode mate :)

    • @carlroge
      @carlroge  6 лет назад

      Hey Addison, you should put a video together - would like to see what you're up against! Yes just normal mortar with some thick floor tiles. normally we'd just concrete a pad, but unfortunately there wasn't enough space next to that beam to pour in.

      I will be recording everything Carl although the rain might be an issue lol

    It is sad you replaced all the beams. Handcrafted beams look much better than modern ones. They do not all seem to be in a bad shape.

    • @carlroge
      @carlroge  6 лет назад +6

      Agreed - we would've loved to. Although the beams themselves looked sound, unfortunately all the mortises were rotten beyond repair

      Good for another 100 years or more. Straight sawn timber will look much better that plastic/composite beams. We will all be gone by then.

      Ultimately, the type, the shape and the craft endures, but the individual pieces get replaced.

    Burying those beam ends in concrete just doesn't seem right. A gap of at least 5 mm would prevent moisture wicking in. Even 2 thicknesses of roofing felt would be enough

    The sheets are asbestos - I have performed the same task. The dust being admitted when each sheet is removed is probably full of this dangerous material. For future similar jobs, I would advise PP3 masks and protective disposable clothing. Treat this material with respect.

      You´re absolutely right. Unfortunately, he doesn´t use a proper fluid for the edges of the sheets.

    Beautiful house. Looks medieval. Is the new roof made out of clay or concrete?

    • @carlroge
      @carlroge  4 года назад +2

      a mix of new clay tiles hidden underneath, and traditional hand made on top

    What are the old roofing sheets made from? They look like they have asbestos in them. They don't look like corrugated iron. Difficult to tell from the video. If they are the former what are rules in France for dealing with them?

    • @carlroge
      @carlroge  6 лет назад

      There were definitely some asbestos in there, hence the gloves and mask! We took them to the local recycling centre, but I'm not sure what they then do with them.

    could you inform me of what drugs you use to enable you to work at such high speeds.
    are you renovating your drug lab?
