You know that kim was ready to die , he wasnt one of the best boxers , he wasnt a clinical boxer but that man was a machine he lift himself up to contender level through hard work alone Pure , pure hard work
Duk-Koo Kim's childhood was a poor and hard knock life. His father died when he was 1 years old (2 years old in Korean age), his mom went through three different marriages and Duk-Koo himself ran away from home at age 17 being tired of constant fights with his half siblings. He moved to Seoul and worked as a shoe shine boy, tour guide, doing manual labors...just about anything to survive. He must have learned the importance of education because he finished high school while working at those jobs. Boxing was the passion he found.
Ray made a GREAT point about how this fight would be seen on ESPN Classic for years and years and years, if not for the fatality to Duk Koo Kim. With all due respect to the tragic loss of life, this really was a *GREAT* fight. :(
It was an incredible fight. Kim was only 23 years old. I don't doubt that he could have remained a contender and had a great career if not for his death.
I remember, pretty clearly, how much trouble Ray had after the fight. I can't remember if a lot of people blamed him for Kim's death, but for a while, boy... Mancini sure blamed himself.
Ray carried a tremendous amount of guilt for years even though boxers all know the risks involved in the sport. How do you tell someone it's not your fault when no matter what, the fighter will blame himself? Ray was never to blame. Boxing is a dangerous sport, period.
Agreed. It was as if you split 1 soul into 2. Then place them in 2 different bodies. Then have them fight each other. They fought with the same desperation, heart, will and iron chin. The only difference was Ray had gone 15 rounds, before this, and was better "stretched out" stamina-wise. After Duk Koo died, Ray was never the same fighter. It was like part of him died, too.
Ray has always been a gentleman with a huge heart , which is not always the case with boxers, however great they are. I feel for him, because you can see that the last thing he wanted was for someone he was fighting to die , in the ring.
I remember the fight against Kim. Its a shame it will be synonymous with Ray Mancini. For all of you to young to remember Ray, this guy has always been a class act. Always always always.
Watched this fight live with my Dad and brother. Saturday CBS boxing I was 13. We couldn't believe how Kim moved forward in the face of Boom Boom's obvious polish and talent. Nobody knew Kim was gravely Ill after he was knocked out. I heard about his death a week later. So sad.
Good to see Ray, realize the chain of events after the fight we’re not solely responsible because of him. Mad respect for my fellow Italian American brother!
I'm so honored to call this man my cousin (my great-grandma is a Mancini). I've yet to meet him though through personal family reasons. My mother spoke so highly of him before her passing.
I watched this fight on the Eastside of Cleveland when I was 13 ray was our hero. much respect to the Kim family greatest fight I've ever seen big love to Ray God bless
With all due respect, and I am not blaming Ray for Kim’s mothers suicide, but it’s wrong of him to say Kim’s mom took her own life because of family fight over insurance and money. No, she took her own life because of the broken heart from losing her son. No mother cares enough about money to take her own life, but losing a child can destroy mom beyond anyone can comprehend. So no, she didn’t die for money. She died from broken heart.
I agree, I know a neighbor who lost a child in a car accident. The mother was never the same after that. She suffered from depression and never went out socially and stayed at home most of the time. She died 10 years later at the age of 45 of a heart attack. Terrible thing to bury a child.
Honestly, that's too much energy trying to decide why someone committed suicide.... Whatever the reason, it's sad and very unfortunate.... It could've been a combination of life issues.... Her son would obviously be the main reason, people would conclude, but hey it's a life, and that's just very sad....
Leighann McGowan to be honest you can’t blame I know how sad it is but at the end of the day he was doing he’s job. ( I know how horrible and evil it sounds and I’m sorry, but it kinda is what he had to do)
We are the same age, and I remember his storied career very well. What an exceptional athlete, role model and human being. Few great sports figures deserve the respect and admiration that is due to Ray Mancini. Thanks, Ray, for all the memories and good things you have done, and for everything for which you have stood.
It wasn't anyone's fault. Tragically, referee Richard Green blamed himself and committed suicide eight months later. Being a boxing referee is the toughest officiating job in all of sports. If a baseball umpire blows a call, it's maybe a runner getting on base who should have been called out. In boxing, two mens' lives are on the line. No referee wants to stop a fight too soon or too late. Many times it's a judgment call and there's really no right or wrong answer. Kim was in trouble for the first 30 seconds of the 13th round (the fight was stopped in the 14th). Kim jumped off of his stool and just started unloading. But Kim's legs were under him; he wasn't throwing back, but he was moving his head and tying up. And after Mancini was done with his barrage, Kim started unloading on Ray.
@@TheSBleeder ...There was nothing Richard Green could have done to stop what happened. Although it may have been a contributing factor, there were "other things" going on in his life, mixed with depression, that led to suicide.

@@audiogeneral I agree with that. I watched it too. I remember my dad saying, son if they don’t stop that young is gonna die. Kim Duc -Koo had the heart of a loin!
Nobody in their right mind could blame Ray for any of those 3 deaths. He was doing his job and some bad things ended up happening. They were certainly not Ray's fault.
Agreed. 1. A note was discovered, written on a lamp shade, in Duk Koo Kim's hotel room. It said "live or die." 2. Kim trained with a COFFIN nearby. He said it was going to be either Mancini, or himself, in it. These guys know what they're signing up for. They're not playing checkers. They're not sitting around a campfire, holding hands and singing Kumbaya. They're trying to harm each other; hopefully, to the point of incapacitation.
I like ray and he always says kid! This kid was great the kid was the best ! Lol god bless you Ray and knowing what kims death meant! And kept it in your heart
Everyone says the same, "no one to blame"--not the Ref, not the fighters. Sometimes it is so clear a fight should have been stopped, but I saw this one---just no way to see he had had enough before the final blow. Actually--if you put aside emotion--if you can--Kim showed the power of the mind, to go "past 100 percent". I think of the famous Greek at Marathon--ran the great distance--further than he could run, did his job and collapsed and died. Who is to blame? I say no one. He gave it ALL, then a bit more than all.
As a fighter, you understand the risks you assume when you get in the ring. It's possible to be hurt and even die in the ring. That's on you. When you're one of these guys who would rather die in a fight than take a step back or tap out, you own that. There is near universal agreement about this in the fight world. Every fighter accepts this. People try to end things there and that's why they never have a sense of closure. That's because the discussion is incomplete. Unbalanced. What's missing in the discussion, and what people don't often talk about is the flip side of that coin. You could be the other guy. You could be the guy who beats his opponent to death. Well, if that happens, that's on you, too. I'm not saying that if you kill someone in a bout, you should be held accountable, that you should be blamed, that you are liable. But it cannot be denied that you killed a man. You are not liable it, but you are responsible for it. And this is the problem I see here with Ray. Ray never took responsibility for Kim Duk-Koo's death. He felt guilty and blamed himself, he says, but the language that he uses implies that he felt that he wasn't at fault and wasn't obligated to carry the burden. He morally distances himself from the knowledge of seeing Kim being carried out unconscious. He diminishes the role of the fight in the referee's suicide. Kim's mother didn't commit suicide because she was distraught over her son's death, it was because of her distress over the insurance money. Ray needs to believe in his faultlessness in his role in the entire affair. This speaks to him still carrying guilt. This is fairly evident in his language and his manner. He is still looking for and has been looking for absolution for forty years. The sad, simple thing is that he could have come to terms with this and found absolution a long time ago by taking responsibility for Kim's death by really owning up to it. He knows what really bothers him about Kim dying - his son - and what Ray could and should have done had he been a better man. Unfortunately, the time for that has probably passed, and with it, the opportunity for Ray to find true absolution.
I remember watching this fight on television. It was a great fight, both giving their all. No one was to blame for what happened. It’s an assumed risk and nothing that was done by anyone involved had anything to do with Mr. Kim’s death. A tragedy, yes, but no one is to blame. Mr. Mancini is certainly blameless in my estimation.....if boxing is allowed to continue, as it should, something like this will eventually happen again, unfortunately.

Musial Namath Kelly Marino Montana Ditka andMancini too many athletes came outta western Pa (technically its ohio) but its more Pittsburgh than Cleveland
Wasn't because of it being more than 12 rounds. It was more when he went down he hit his head hard. More than all the punches. He slammed his hard he was knocked out.
Listening to him, it seems like he's an upright guy. If you watch the post fight interview, before anyone knew anything was wrong, he's obviously an honorable and gracious fighter. But if you ever hit someone and they die, every single punch you ever throw after that is going to be different. I'm sorry but it just is. The worst tragedy was the mother though. I've seen a mother cry over losing a son and it's absolutely horrific.
It IS a great fight of all time, and they should show it, maybe not cover the final seconds, but as a fight, two great warriors, neither one taking one step backwards. What else can we ask of boxers/fighters. And referee? Those guys can't win, if they don't step in, in time, they get blamed, and if they step in "too soon", they get blamed. But like Mancini, said, no blame for this ref, not really.
I don't in any way want to trivialise the death of another human being but what happened was an accident, now boxing being a combat sport may be more prone to this type of accident, than most other sports (actually motor racing statistically has more fatalities).
He would have been allmost like Ray Leonard if Kim wouldnt have died that day. Sugar Ray "retired" and there was a hole for entertaining lightweight champ. He was in negotiations with pepsi and couple other that caliber companies.... they were going to make him a star that everyone would notice and know, not just boxing fans. Maybe even a movie of his story, maybe even him playing the role. I know Sly was good friends with Ray so thats not impossibility... But i remember him gettin hit... ALOT. That was his style. He would have beaten Livingston Bramble, or whatever the name was, if Kim hadnt died. Livingston used that and Ray let that affect him. So he would have propably had first reign from 82-85/86. And he would have won wbc or ibf belt too in that time. And then who knows how many reigns more... But he would definetely be suffering dementia pugilistia now, if he would have had twice or three times the peak years that he had. Because of his in fighting style.
I saw the fight live on TV. Nobody did anything wrong, either fighter or the referee. It was a really great fight, but it ended tragically. It happens sometimes in this beautiful, brutal sport.

I never heard of this fight until today I watch the fight definitely crazy fight but I wouldn't picture anyone dying then I heard Kim's mother killed himself and the referee also killed himself I'm not sure if it was because of this fight I'm going to look that up later
Well, God, the only one and true Jesus Christ allowed Kim to go out his way. My pastor Apostle Gino Jennings was preaching about that (speaking things into existence and The Bible telling people to have few words) today from Germany.
You notice with lighter weight fighters, even the ones who used to brawl, usually are still quite lucid and healthy in their 50's onwards. Barry McGuigan is the same, clear as a bell.
Leighann McGowan I don’t think what you said is a fair statement! Mancini was never the same fighter or person after Kim died...many people commented on that!! You are not in his shoes, so you shouldn’t judge!!

The way Mancini punches should be outlawed. He punched Kim on the side of the head repeatedly instead of straight punching. That and the fact that it was a mismatch fight is why Mancini is responsible for Kim's death. The death fight was similar the mismatch fight between Max Baer and Frankie Campbell that ended in Campbell's death. Referee Richard Green knew better and should have stopped the mismatch save his fear of being reprimanded for an early stop. Green committed suicide years later haunted by his guilt. Kim's mother, traumatized over her son's death committed suicide by drinking pesticide. Mancini, driven by an illustrious desire to be world champion did whatever it took to make daddy proud. Ray's father never got a chance to be champion because WWII broke out. Ray was supposed to be what he couldn't be. A tragic story totally that led to 3 deaths and a wasted life for a former boxer haunted by guilt that originates from a pathetic, immature father who could never get over not having a chance to win a silly boxing title.

It’s sad Ray has to carry the burden that he is blamed for 3 deaths due to the fights outcome.
True.
that would take the 'fight' out of anyone.
I know this is off-topic but those clock hands are moving too fast
D.C Dope Haha!! No they're not lol....
Lmfaooo what
DCDope was institutionalized from an lsd overdose shortly after his comment
Listening to him, it seems like he's an upright guy. If you watch the post fight interview, before anyone knew anything was wrong, he's obviously an honorable and gracious fighter. But if you ever hit someone and they die, every single punch you ever throw after that is going to be different. I'm sorry but it just is. The worst tragedy was the mother though. I've seen a mother cry over losing a son and it's absolutely horrific.
And we have Wilder wanting to kill someone in the ring. Enough said.
That's the chance? Something can, and always will.
I don't in any way want to trivialise the death of another human being but what happened was an accident, now boxing being a combat sport may be more prone to this type of accident, than most other sports (actually motor racing statistically has more fatalities).
Keep it real.
Remember goofball Deontay Wilder saying that he WANTED to "catch a body" in the ring....?
good guy
Ray is real
Boom boom!!!
How's he doing ?🎉
Warren Zevon brought me here.
Did he bleach his skin? He was darker back in the day
Both fighters were warriors.
I met boom boom On central avenue in NY westchester near aPlace called Fud ruckers hamburger place. I called his name and he walked towards me and shook my hand when My brother noticed him but I called out to him. I wonder if he remembers.
I'm around the same sizes. Him maybe just slightly taller. I Mention That in case he reads this..
I never heard of this fight until today I watch the fight definitely crazy fight but I wouldn't picture anyone dying then I heard Kim's mother killed himself and the referee also killed himself I'm not sure if it was because of this fight I'm going to look that up later
Well now I know I didn't even have to look it up just had to watch this video
Well, God, the only one and true Jesus Christ allowed Kim to go out his way. My pastor Apostle Gino Jennings was preaching about that (speaking things into existence and The Bible telling people to have few words) today from Germany.
Boom boom dad
Violins not violence. Why can't the others be like the Stradivarius, Guarnari's and Amati's ? ...
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Dang man so tragic
Ohio finest.
He’s married into my family haven’t met him yet,but I hear he’s a solid guy.
Shut yo fkin mouth
I always liked ray m. Very unfortunate what happened.
Ray has so much class compared to Pazienza.
I doubt it.
That shirt looks the Mexican eagle 🦅 eating the snake 🐍 🤦♂️
He looks chirpy.
You notice with lighter weight fighters, even the ones who used to brawl, usually are still quite lucid and healthy in their 50's onwards. Barry McGuigan is the same, clear as a bell.
Triple homicide
Seems cold hearted and making excuses for the two suicides ...ugh
Leighann McGowan I don’t think what you said is a fair statement!
Mancini was never the same fighter or person after Kim died...many people commented on that!! You
are not in his shoes, so you shouldn’t judge!!
@@sticktrik ok.calm.down ✌
@@leighannmcgowan5239 Cold hearted? Excuses?.....You´re out of your mind. 1:11 Take a close look at his face, his bodylanguage and his stuttering when he speaks about Kims mindset of fighting and the story he told about the coffin..... coldhearted and excuses, never heard anything dumber than this.
Leighann McGowan 😢awwwhh
did i hurt your feelings?!!
@@sticktrik you dont have the power to hurr my feelings....bye I have better things to do ...ciao
Your comment is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read.
Your comment is so ignorant that you should be censored. Never attempt to comment on pugilistic sports again. Ever.
@@martysykes3221I agree
Dued because you continued to hit him boxing should be done on points and not for a ko should be see who hits faster and don't get hit landing hits with.minimum power still being judge on impact your a killer my guy you caused the death of too ppl should be ashamed
Any incident could be happened in boxing match cuz it is a dangerous game.
Imho, Boom Boom was never the same after that fight.
They are seriously understating the tragedy of this. And 3 people died cause of this, not just 1.
But weren't two of the deaths voluntary and intentional?
@@MandyGoldenGoddessFan Kim's mom killed herself mostly because of the never ending squabbling over the life insurance. Richard Greene the referee later killed himself although, it appears to be unrelated. Greene's daughter said he had suffered from depression for years.
Why would this interviewer bring this up? There was so many great things about Ray’s career why bring up something negative? Interviewer has no class.
Ray doesn't seem to have a prob with it.
