Elite Skirmisher: has a metal helmet and metal shield, with proper armor - 4 Pierce armor Rattan Archer: wears a loose shirt and a straw hat - 6 Pierce armor #justaoethings
Rattan is a labour-intensive form of reed armour, when hardened and lacquered it can reputedly resist steel weapons. A favourite of the South East Asian armies due to it's prevalence and ease of wear in the hot and humid climate, it remained in use until the early 20th century, where some Southern Chinese militias still incorporated rattan shield and sword troops.

Shame you didn't mention the 96 HP Cavalry Archers. Although they miss Parthian Tactics and Husbandry, thanks their HP they are very pop efficient units (like you make CA with Persians even you miss Bracer). In the Castle Age the Cav Archers have no draw back, in fact they have more HP there than everyone else's. Now the revealed locations kinda make sense and for the blood lines you have to build stable, that helps transition into elephants later.
I can't really see anything they're good against that you couldn't defeat with Archers and Rattans. Of course, screwing around with enemy villagers may be a good options, but your opponent will wait with anti-archer stuff anyway.
They are mobile and population efficient, they may not be resource wise efficient, but pop yes Like they are your biggest HP archers you have, so with the same numbers against something else they win. Of course except some raiding early, they doesen't make much difference before late game, but people may oversee this option and I making them know it is there.
@@Chenla Maybe it's just my personal playstyle, but I apart from their speed, I never found cav archers any specific use that other units couldn't accomplish just as well. Except for killing villagers quickly, but most of my opponents usually defend their economy by the time I get there with cavalry archers, and I do the same. If I want some eco damage done, I go for scouts or archers (sometimes a skirmisher-pike combo) and go for it in Feudal.
Just had a match where I kited elite Rattans pretty effectively against Cavaliers. That extra speed is pretty valuable. I think with proper micro they're not all that bad against Cavalry. Or maybe my opponent was just clicking my units instead of patrol/attack move.

Skip to 11:05 for most important part. PS: hey SotL, if you're gonna remake old civs, do Spanish first please. I still think you low-balled the Missionary a lot.
I believe their reveal enemy starting location bonus is considered as an indirect economy bonus that helps at laming. With Vietnamese you don't have the risk wasting time searching for the enemy if you want a quick boar steal - you can right away go for the lame. Maybe that is the intended eco bonus: having a better chance of getting 2 more boars than your opponent.
Elite Mangudai and Camel Archers both have 8 base damage, which with +4 through various technologies, will result in doing 12 damage, which does 2 damage through Rattan Archers total of 10 pierce armor.
Great video. I still think that Vietnamese are underpowered but... You just finished it and we still doesn't have any new DLC, I never expected that. PD: Please redo Slavs and Teutons, I want to see how good are their bonuses!

SOTL: Gives archers A- Vietnamese: We have all blacksmith techs, 20% more hp on archers, an upgrade for trash units, arbalests AND even rattan archers which have 6 pierce armor. WHAT DID WE DO WRONG?!?!!?
An idea to give the Vietnamese a buff: cheaper military buildings. This would be a mild boost to their Feudal Age, and would be pretty good later on. They do really need some sort of eco bonus, and so far we don't have any civs that have a direct discount on Barracks, Stables, etc. (except Malians, but theirs is for all non-Farm buildings).
Vietnamese basically don't have Stables and Barracks and their Siege Workshops are average at best so... Cheaper Archery Ranges? I think they deserve an A because not only foot archer, carvary archer of them is really stand out and have a place for them.
I thought Indian Elephant Archers beat rattan archers every time with equal resources though that might be because of AI micro and the fact there's more rattan to bump into each other. Actually I did the tests before the latest buffs to vietnamese so maybe that has something to do with it too. Showing the tech tree and fighting at the same time was cool. One interesting thing you could expand on is the cavalier/paladin video. When is it worth it to get the upgrade for other units like xbows? Galleys? etc... vs weaker versions of those units? What about for blacksmith tests?
As a Vietnamese, i must say the kind of architecture in this game for Vietnam is an insult for our culture. Don't know did the dev just ignorant or they didn't fucking care at all. Our ancient architectures are similar to China, Japan, Korea ' architectures, not some Indosphere architecture alike in this game.
They really should get this unique tech: Guerilla warfare: archers, skirmishers, and rattan archers can move through trees but cannot attack when standing among trees.
the Vietnamese architecture is looking likes Chinese not Thai nor khmer. Vietnamese first use crossbow not bow. It's common for Vietnamese use crossbow rather than bow.
Instead of lacking the Blast Furnace (+2 melee attack), I think the Vietnamese should lack the Plate Mail Armor. As I understand, the Vietnamese is not bad at hand-to-hand attack but since the main army is peasant, they rarely use armor, which is nothing strange at all ! Sorry, my bad grammar!
It's better for me to be honest, at least the battle elephants would be better against those huskarls that they would be used against all the archers that you're using.
Spirit, one thing you COULD do to make things easier on the video making end is Go through each of the videos and see which civs got similar things changed, perhaps compile them into a grouped change video!
oh, boy,!the holy spirit is back. Wow, those bamboo armours sure can take a beating :) also, mesoamericans working best with vietnamese.......... dont tell me they didnt know. no way. no wonder they won the war. the americans couldnt come at them with cavalry.
If you're updating some civ overviews and happen to be in the neighborhood of the Persians, can you do some testing on their team bonus? I know knights are already pretty good against archers and it doesn't necessarily change that match up, but does it have an effect in, say, a mangudai vs paladin situation? Does it help take down plumed archers with higher hp? Idk, just something I was wondering about...
I’ve noticed you’ve made several videos comparing units that are similar to each other (i.e gbetto vs throwing axeman, samurai vs champion) and they fair in different situations. I was wondering if you’d be interested in doing a more in-depth comparison between other units that have a similar roles compared to other units. The ones that come to mind are the Jaguar Warriors vis-à-vis the Teutonic Knights vis-à-vis the Champion vis-à-vis the Samurai (maybe the Huskarl too). Another one could be the Paladin vis-à-vis Boyar and Cataphract. Just food for thought. Great video as always! Keep up the good work!
I'd love a video on the best counters for unique units. For example what best beats organ guns, war wagons, Conquistadors. Even best counter for cav archers-are skirms or halbs better? And cataphracts are anti-infantry, are halbs still the best counter? A video or two for all those moments when players are confused whats the best counter. Love the videos keep it up!
Could you make a video about the deer that attacks your outpost in the viking conquerors mission? What leads it to attack and could you use it in a custom map?

One interesting thing you could expand on is the cavalier/paladin video. When is it worth it to get the upgrade for other units like xbows? Galleys? etc... vs weaker versions of those units? What about for blacksmith tests?

As a Vietnamese, i must say the kind of architecture in this game for Vietnam is an insult for our culture. Don't know did the dev just ignorant or they didn't fucking care at all. Our ancient architectures are similar to China, Japan, Korea ' architectures, not some Indosphere architecture alike in this game.
They really should get this unique tech:
Guerilla warfare: archers, skirmishers, and rattan archers can move through trees but cannot attack when standing among trees.
That could be busted on Black Forest
They allied themselves with the lorax
the Vietnamese architecture is looking likes Chinese not Thai nor khmer. Vietnamese first use crossbow not bow. It's common for Vietnamese use crossbow rather than bow.
Man, I enjoy those elephant facts more than I should...
Instead of lacking the Blast Furnace (+2 melee attack), I think the Vietnamese should lack the Plate Mail Armor. As I understand, the Vietnamese is not bad at hand-to-hand attack but since the main army is peasant, they rarely use armor, which is nothing strange at all
!
Sorry, my bad grammar!
It's better for me to be honest, at least the battle elephants would be better against those huskarls that they would be used against all the archers that you're using.
Charlie's in the trees man, Charlie's in the trees!
I'd like a video about conversion resistance (faith) and does it stack with the teutons team bonus?
What happen if vietnam ancient can walk through the forest and can be invincible until attack enemy
Spirit, one thing you COULD do to make things easier on the video making end is
Go through each of the videos and see which civs got similar things changed, perhaps compile them into a grouped change video!
Yay,im Vietnamese so this video is about meeeee
US troop: *go piss at a tree*
The tree: What the the f*ck are you doing, *grab the ak*
US troop: oh sh*t
What about Turkish ally? will he get Imperial Skirms without Elite skirms?
No
Are they less likely to be spotted by the American civ?
SOTL i think u should do the britons
Cause u didn't gave grades for the britons
oh, boy,!the holy spirit is back.
Wow, those bamboo armours sure can take a beating :) also, mesoamericans working best with vietnamese.......... dont tell me they didnt know. no way. no wonder they won the war. the americans couldnt come at them with cavalry.
1:04
Vietnamese had lightsaber!
You learn something new everyday
btw it was just the intro, no relation with them in there actually...
I automatically yelled at the screen at 6:10 when the Onager showed up, that was terrifying.
Congrats on 4 years :) Love AOE and your style!
Can you make a new analisis for this civ? elephans have +50 hp, now has husbandry, and a new tec
It has been 3000 years
I hope we get to watch some day a second version of this civ overview given how many changes Vietnamese have had so far
As great as this video is, I’m going to miss these civ overviews. So informative and so entertaining to watch.
R.I.P Civ Overview. 2014-2018.
Ooh boy
Im the best Vietnamese player because i am Vietnamese
My recommendation for you is to use gullira tactics thats work all the time
No more civs to oberview, I suppose it's DLC time
Thank you very much for finishing this series. Now you could redo the Huns, Teutons, Slavs and Britons as they all went without grades.
+50% attack against Franks
I'd love a video on the best counters for unique units. For example what best beats organ guns, war wagons, Conquistadors. Even best counter for cav archers-are skirms or halbs better? And cataphracts are anti-infantry, are halbs still the best counter? A video or two for all those moments when players are confused whats the best counter. Love the videos keep it up!
Could you make a video about the deer that attacks your outpost in the viking conquerors mission? What leads it to attack and could you use it in a custom map?
Do the byzantines get a bonus against them?
....
byzantines...greek fire...napalm...
eh?!
Ill leave now
dank 1+
as i viet with good history background, vietnamese army did not have any special units except war elephant.
Phong HO We were on China’s par when it came to gunpowder weapons too.
Imp skim was actually real
the Vietnamese architecture should look like the Chineese
