  • YanksAtShea marks it's 40th season as a NY Yankees fan. It all started with Sparky Lyle and the game finale profiled in this 1972 ABC-TV interview; Sparky struck out Ike Brown to save a 1-0 Yankee victory against Detroit in August of 1972 during the Yankes first pennant race in 8 years. Long live the memory of the miracle of Sparky Lyle and 40 seasons of Yankees baseball.

Look at young Sparky!!! Man did he have one of the best sliders in the game.

I remember that year. It was the first time in my baseball watching life that the Yankees were in a real pennant race. I was never a Yankee fan, but I was rooting for them because I hated the Mets and wanted the Yankees to show them up. It's funny that for almost 100 years the Yankees have dominated baseball, but if you were a kid at that time you only knew them as a losing team and had no memory of them being the great Yankees.

Am I the only one who remembers Eddie Layton announcing Sparky's entrance with a rendition of "Pomp and Circumstance"? That predated "Enter Sandman" by nearly 25 years.

Toby Wright did play this. It was PR director Marty Appel's idea and very memorable. However Lyle grew tired of the pressure it brought him and asked Appel to tell Wright to stop playing it. Too bad!

@@YanksAtShea Thanks. I didn't realize it was Wright. And I didn't know that Sparky had requested it be stopped. As a fan it did for 1972 games what Mariano's entrance did for us as well. And opposing teams, lol.

Celerino Sanchez was quite a name in New York that summer. This was the last year before Graig Nettles came to the Yanks.

One of the greatest trades in Yankee history...up there with acquiring Maris, Nettles, or David Wells....also love seeing then third baseman, Celerino Sanchez, behind Sparky...

I could see where Sparky's slider could be effective even if it was the only pitch he used. It just broke down sharply. That is a hard pitch to hit even if you know it's coming. If it hangs though, it's gonna get walloped.

Yes, The Yankees would move into 2nd place in the A.L. east behind the Tigers managed by Billy Martin, They would play good baseball for about 6 weeks, but would fade away by the middle of Sept. and will finish in 4th place.

Equally hard to believe how Sparky went from 1977 "Cy Young to Sayonara" (Greg Nettles quote) the following year, when George brought in Gossage. I hated the Goose for a long time, for being guy who forced out Sparky. That and all the moon shots he gave up to George Brett.

Hard to believe the guy who elevated the Yanks to immediate contenders not to mention an eventual Cy Young winner came at the cost of Danny Cater. The clip of Lyle striking out Brown was about the climax of that season. I watched this on PIX and although there is no sound the excitement of that game was tremendous. They hung in for a few more weeks but they were no where nearly as good as the Tigers or O’s. You can still find the playoff tickets floating around that were printed but never used.

Great comments, thanks. I remember that game very well, even though I was only 8 at the time! After strike one, I felt Ike Brown had no chance. Even when he knew it was coming, he couldn't lay off that slider!

The trade by the Red Sox giving up Lyle for Danny Cater will go down in history as the worst trade the Red Sox ever made next to letting Babe Ruth go and refusing to take Lou Gehrig as compensation from the Yanks ....

yes, I remember, Cater was nothing but a bum in a Red Sox uniform while Sparky blossomed with the Yankees..

Bobby Murcer was the unnamed captain of that team...he was dumped by that CREEP Steinbrenner just brfore they went on their WS run...THANKS George.

But when they traded Bobby Bonds they got Mickey Rivers and Ed Figueroa, so it worked out.

I suggest you read up on Yankees history. That trade helped them win 2 World Championships. Championships they could not have won otherwise!!! Steinbrenner didn't make the trade that brought the Yankees Bobby Bonds before trading Bonds for Ed Figueroa and Mickey Rivers. During that time, George was temporarily expelled for being George. Gabe Paul, probably the best G.M. of his time, made those brilliant deals
