  • Lieutenant Colonel Ved Prakash Ghai, born on February 22, 1935, in Dehradun, Uttar Pradesh, was a distinguished officer in the Indian Army who was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second-highest gallantry award. Commissioned into the Madras Regiment on December 4, 1954, Lt Col Ghai had a distinguished career, including service with the Indian contingent in Congo during UN operations in 1961.
During the 1971 Indo-Pak war, Lt Col Ghai’s unit was stationed on the Western Front, where he played a crucial role in the Battle of Basantar. Commanding a battalion in the Shakargarh sector, Lt Col Ghai faced fierce counterattacks by the enemy. Despite the intense fighting and severe personal risk, he moved fearlessly across the battlefield, directing and motivating his troops. His leadership was instrumental in repulsing repeated enemy assaults, which included tank-supported counterattacks.
