  • Wooo another review from me! I have lots of fun stuff I want to review for you guys but I'm trying to spread them out so it doesn't get annoying. But fashion/style videos are fun to do so I'll probably have lots coming up. Anyways I hope you all found this helpful! I try to be as diplomatic and detailed in my reviews as possible, to cover all the things you might be concerned about when ordering. Sending you my love!
Here are the items I ordered-

I had a nearly identical experience to yours. I also live in Canada, and purchased from them last year (paid over $200 for two dresses, including a red version of the dress you have). I consulted with their customer service before picking sizes, and they recommended a size 4 for me. I'm bigger than you - I have a 36" bust, 30" ribcage and I tend to corset down to about 24-25 inches externally, to get my vintage dresses to hang the right way.
I also got hit with over $50 duty, and when I tried on the dress I couldn't even fit into it. Not only did the bust flatten me, but the waist was so short that it almost fit me like an empire waistline - it was 2-3 inches up my ribcage, so I couldn't even zip it up! It looks like it was made for someone 6 inches shorter than me. I couldn't send it back because of the international shipping fees, so like you, I'm also stuck wondering what I should do with this dress.
I tried an almost identical style from Lindy Bop from the UK. It was about half the price, slightly lower quality fabric, but it actually fit me and the waist falls at the right level.

Packaging and things like dressmaker's chalk can make or break a client relationship, because they show an amount of care and thoughtfulness on the part of the company. I work occasionally making boards that go inside treadmills, and even though nobody sees them aside from the repair guys, you still want to take care to make sure it looks nice when you send it off, because it shows you care about craftsmanship and the client's business. It's the small things.

Dang girl!! I wish you'd checked with me first about the sizing; they're stuff can be fabulous but their sizing is CRAZY!!
You always have to order a size down. Don't ask me why! And yeah. My last blouse was cheap-o. But my first dress was spectacular and of top couture quality! Ugh.

I don't buy clothes from North America any more purely because of the massive excise duty we have to pay in the UK (it pretty much doubles the price on a T-shirt for example) so I feel your pain.

There's really no need to buy stuff from the US imho. You can order stuff within the EU and pay only like 3 pounds for shipping and no custom fees. I live in Germany and I frequently buy stuff from the UK or France for example. So no need for US stuff.

  • @MaineJuen

heyyy! I work for a shipping company and brokerage is indeed a customs related charge. Basically the shipping company represents you at the border much like how you'd represent yourself if you went shopping in the usa and then crossed the border. Certain shipping companies charge for this (UPS) while others include it in the cost of shipping (FedEx). However border services can always charge duties and taxes and depending on the item there can also be assorted fees involved besides brokerage.
For those shopping online I ALWAYS recommend checking the website's shipping FAQ for what they're responsible for and what you (as the buyer) are responsible for. I checked out trashy divas shipping FAQ and it does state:
"Please be aware that all international parcels may be subject to import taxes, duties, brokerage or customs fees upon delivery, and are the responsibility of the customer. Please understand that we unfortunately cannot control or prevent any delays within customs."
So yeah, just a heads up as someone who works in customer service for a shipping company that you should always, always, always check a website's shipping page as legally they have to indicate this information of who is responsible for duties and taxes.

I'm a dressmaker student and I tell you I know my shit alright. That dress, as beautiful as it is, would've needed darts on the waist area. That cut in itself is reaaalllyyy complicated so the mistake happened when making the patterns. I have a rule when ordering clothing online; never buy fitted tops or clothes with complicated cuts. Especially if they're not lined. If it's cheap then sure but there's been somesorta budgeting problem when designing this dress and it was over priced. Just my thoughts tho.

So weird! I just got back from New Orleans, which is where the Trashy Diva shops are. They have three shops, one for accessories, one for shoes, and one for clothing. I really liked their shops (even though they're pretty tiny), but I found them to be a bit overpriced. I do appreciate that they have a high quality collection though so I guess that's the price to pay for convenience/vintage. I got a pair of rhinestone earrings from them, and I absolutely love them. They were $28.00, which is pretty absurd considering they're rhinestones, but I'm a total sucker for vintage. Overall, I'd say it was totally worth it. Thank you for sharing your experience!

I totally get what you mean by your personalized online order! Ordering online is so impersonal vs in store so I always feel better when whatever company I'm ordering from puts that little extra into what they're sending! So many people re-order from Gametee because of the personalized notes you get with each order and I personally reorder from a few t-shirt companies purely because their order forms are customized. It really is the little things when ordering online that make the experience :)

Pretty honest review! Love the color of the dress! I discovered Trashy Diva about a year ago and I have ordered online a few times. I am very pleased with their dresses even though I agree that they are somewhat overpriced. You should have contacted their customer service! They are very helpful with everything, they could have advised you on sizing. (I wear a 2 with a 25" waist). Also there's always a description on the site concerning lining and other details. Customs though is another story. A bummer, but not the store's fault.

  • @dorkabrain
    @dorkabrain 10 лет назад +2

I definitely don't think it's because you're between sizes. I think either their measurement listings on the site are off OR they're all over the place with the production of the dresses. I ordered a trixie dress from them about 5 years ago. Measured myself multiple times and made sure to go with the corresponding size on the site, it came and was probably at LEAST 2 sizes too small. The two sides of the zip were like a long distance romance; it was going to be a very long time before they met up. And the fabric was much lighter weight than I expected also. A little bit scratchy and very thin.

That color does look gorgeous with your hair color and style. After taking it in in the bust/waist area, try it with a petticoat, that might improve the shape if the fabric of the skirt also doesn't look so great.

You should totally check out Ebay for pin up items. If you've mentioned it in a video previously I apologize! but they have the cutest items and you can narrow down results based on Buy it Now vs. bidding, set a price limit, and see which ones have free shipping. Granted, free shipping on ANYTHING from China takes quite a long time though. There are so many options too, dresses, shoes, cat eye sunglasses/frames, swim suits, cardigans. All of it. :D

I also live in Canada and no longer purchase online from the U.S because of the expensive customs fees. Anything I buy online now tends to be the size and weight of a backpack or smaller, because they usually target larger and heavier boxes. Recently my friend ordered eight shirts from the states and got hit with $45 in customs. womp womp :(
I personally think you look amazing in that dress!! I looked at the website and I agree that area of the dress looks more flat and structured than it is. It does say that the dress is unlined, so this could be good to keep in mind for future buys. I would have also appreciated the website having the dress on an actual person and not just a mannequin, as I feel seeing it on someone gives you a better idea of what to expect.

  • @fellideli
    @fellideli 10 лет назад

Trashy diva is a New Orleans based store. I live around New Orleans and buy the majority of my vintage repo stuff from them. The reason the dress is bunching is bc it's too big. A size 2 would prob fit you perfectly. That's what I wear and I'm a little thicker than you. The only problems I've ran into with their dresses are not being able to fill the bust properly, but being small chested that comes with a lot of things that I wear. As far as the dress people are referring to on modcloth... It's the same dress.. They distribute trashy diva dresses they just re named it. So if you weren't happy with this one you won't like that one either. I'd say not to give up on them just yet, although the 50 for customs is ridiculous, so that may be reason enough.

You might want to put darts in it to take out those diagonal folds. Once you've got the darts in, you can put on iron-on interfacing to the back which will make the material heavier, and then line it so that it feels decent on your skin. Let us know how it turns out?

Hey, ALB! I work for an online store, and have actually worked in the returns department, and to me, that does indeed look like deodorant. As for the dress, the way the waist is picking as you pointed out it looks like a cheap material (yet another reason I doubt it's dressmakers chalk). Like, Forever 21 cheap, which would be fine if you were paying Forever 21 prices of 20-30 US dollars. That sucks about the quality, however, in summer you are going to be looking fly as fuck in that dress!!

  • @andrewschroeder7259

I agree that the fabric definitely isn't suited to clothing. Also I think the main problem is that this dress design really lends itself to being custom-sewn to someone's measurements rather than being bought off the rack. Of course if it were custom-made in a better fabric it would cost a lot more! Ah, the choices one must make to look fabulous!

I had this problem too when I ordered a really beautiful prom dress from the UK... I live in the states. Okay so the dress was only $185 which is very decent for such an elegant, detailed, perfect ball gown and I completely fell in love and I wanted this dress so badly I cried for days after this. I don't get a lot of nice stuff because we don't have a ton of money and I wanted to feel pretty and feminine for once and enjoy the dance with me boyfriend and yeah this whole thing just broke my heart. But the dress came to about $206 or something like that after shipping. Ohmygod, the customs fee.... Was a few dollars less than the actual dress itself. The fee was like $180ish and my mom f-lipped out. The bank called us and said our card was being used overseas so my mom just went with it and said "yes okay cancel please" so yeah that's my sad dress story :c

Brokerage fees are actually a charge separate from customs, generally from the shipper that carries the package. I know FedEx charges them for basically just walking up your driveway, but basically its just a way for the carrier to get more money out of you.

That really looks like the sort of dress that works best over a corset. Especially considering the retro style and that, in the day, one would likely be stuffed into some sort of shapewear regardless of size. I'm considering giving it a go and seeing how I feel about it. I need an LBD and almost everything looks like a sack on me.
As far as the brokerage fee, that sounds like they shipped via UPS who then, I believe, hands the parcel off to a Canadian carrier at the border. So the fee is actually the payment for the second carrier. It's really stupid. Best to ask if they will ship via regular post if the default is UPS/Fedex/etc. Regular post should have no brokerage fee.

I don't think you have to take it in. maybe you just have to iron it? you could put a sash on the sides, tie in the back? that would bring in the waist and it would be even more princess-y. a belt? It looks really pretty on you and it doesn't have to be super tight.

  • @jaxdester

I know you've probably already thought of this, but if you wash the dress the opposite way than the tag says, it should shrink. It's possible that it shrinks enough to take the puckering out.

My first thought upon seeing it was that there needs to be darts in the under bust area/the darts are a bit off (I can't see whether it does or doesn't have darts on my phone). A decent dressmaker should be able to fix that easily though, looks like it just needs a little altering to fit nicer.

I find wearing a petticoat with a dress like that will help with that puckering situation around your waist, same thing has happened with me with a couple of dresses

I checked their website. Apparently the sell the same dress you got in white in the bridal section and it is lined. Not sure why they would create the same dress, one lined and one not.

The dress is Ill fitted because the construction of the dress was made poorly in terms of fit. It is best to take it to a seamstress so they can take in all the extra fabric puckering around the torso. Hope that helps :)

I was totally thinking of Giselle's dress like the moment you put it up to the camera haha I was hoping you would say her name when you said "It kind of reminds me of..." And I agree, pockets on dresses (or skirts) are definitely a plus to me. Gotta have pockets.
I can definitely see what you are talking about though, what with the fit and how it looks in the waist area. It's a beautiful color though and it definitely had the potential to be an amazing dress. But it definitely didn't look like it was made too well /:

This may be out of left field but would you consider doing a fake lashed video on what you use and how to apply AND take them off? Like getting the glue off. I had a bad run in with lash glue and can't tell if I just did it wrong x.x

$50 brokerage fee?! That's outrageous, wow! I live in Canada too and I think the most I've ever been charged for those fees is around $20. Loved the video though!

I think it would be cute with a little underbust corset or corset belt, or just a wide belt around the waist. Unless the dress is uncomfortably big, I would personally avoid taking it in. Putting in a lining might help, but I think the best thing to do is just draw attention away from the puckering.

you could try a thick belt! it might be able to cover up the excess fabric

You could try a teal under bust corset over the dress to take it in
Or you could get a belt but I think it looks amazing in you 😊

Brokerage fees are the worst for us Canadians. It is to do with customs and it generally is a flat rate of fifty bucks no matter what you are buying which is pretty brutal when you buy anything that can be less or equal to fifty dollars. If you order things online try going to places that ship through Borderfree, they will tell you exactly how much you are paying including duties and brokerage fees before you even buy. That's what I do now at least, I'm in Alberta for reference :)

It sucks about the customs fee because that's not the fault of the site! It's Canada's fault XD We get the same issues when it comes to international orders coming into the US that are more than $200 total, so maybe that's what happened?
I definitely understand "personal" packaging, because I love it when there is something fun to open like a present! Bummer about the material and sizing D:

Ugh, I always get charged a stupid amount of taxes when I order items from the States. It's ridiculous. Luckily I have a friend who travels back and forth from the U.S. and Canada regularly so I send things to them and they bring it back for me. But I totally understand why you're annoyed!

I'm very surprised and a bit disappointed. I have a jacket, shoes and a dress from them, and they all fit perfectly. I have friends who also got stuff from them, and it never disappointed. I have to say we all bought our stuff from the retail shop, so we were able to try it all on. On the other hand, I don't have lining in my dress either, and that's really a shame. I usually don't buy clothes without a lining if they're above 30€, but I feel in love with the dress and couldn't refrain. The thing is, since they're all about the pin up style and stuff, I think you're supposed to wear what women wore back then, so a slip might be needed or expected? I don't know. It's still a bit of a shame, really.
