This is their finest song, their greatest achievement. Chris and Tina wrote the funky rhythm and bass line, David simply sings almost the same melody as Tina’s bass riff. Brilliant lyrics.
@@SightAfterDark Tina Weymouth was really underrated as a bassist - pretty funky here tho - also played keyboards on some songs - guitarist was Bernie Worrell from Parliament Funkadelic fame
thematically this pairs up really well with the 1980 Talking Heads track "Listening Wind," (not done in this live show), which is essentially about a guy planting bombs in an unnamed town in africa. there's an incredible version of it by the Ugandan artist Geoffrey Oryema from the year 2000 as well. ruclips.net/video/outaG7frk5g/видео.html&ab_channel=xianland

My daughter is 3 and a half and loves this song. She dances just like he does to it and watches every move he makes. She's enamored with this video and I'm here for it. I don't know any 3 yearolds who are fans of talking heads 😂 people see her do it and just fall down laughing.
And ya gotta give the director Jonathan Demme as well big credit who did a tremendous job editing and visualizing this concert. He's done some great great films including Silence of the Lambs.
I was 17 when I bought this album in 1979. Devoted fan ever since. David Byrne is a certifiable genius. A prolifically creative and poetic visionary for the Ages. 🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦
Awesome performance by all. I'm a big fan of bassist Tina, so props to her, don't know how you can play and move like that. Also love the irony between the dark lyrics and the party music, too. It's uncomfortably funny in the great way, Talking Heads at the best.
Such an incredible concert movie, one of the few live performances that I would recommend over studio release, but then everything was engineered for great sound and visuals.
When you get to the end of the concert, during "Take Me To The River", David Byrne goes around and introduces everyone. He starts with Bernie Worrell and finishes with Tina Weymouth.
There's so much to love about what many, including me, consider the greatest live concert movie of all time. The genius of the Demme/Byrne collaboration. The unreal songwriting. The pure theatrics. The insatiable groove. Here's the thing I love though, kinda nestled in with all those other things - if you showed up for that concert as an audience member, you arrive into a theater with a bare stage, save for some ladders leaning up against the back wall. It's bare. No monitors, no kit of any kind. What kind of concert have I paid into here anyway? Then eventually David walks on with a song he wants to play, and joined by Tina for Heaven. Then, slowly, the drum and percussion and keyboard risers are pushed into position, and this entire concert and experience seems like it's borne out of nothing. So when David sprints behind the stage during this song, where are the cables that would normally be there that he would trip over? Yeah, they're not there. This is one magnificently choreographed piece of musical theater, and everything is happening for a reason, and nothing gets in the way. One last thing - Tina FUCKING LAYS IT DOWN on this track.
Thanks so much both, for that. So pleased you're enjoying it! Seem to have spent a lot of my life, telling folk to watch this....searching selfishly for affirmation of the brilliance of Talking Heads! And now I get from you too! Can't wait for the second part... once again Thank you. X
Talking Heads are one of the greatest collection of talented musicians ever!! The Black guy playing the funky keyboards is Bernie Worrel. He played in the Parliaments and The Funkadelics. The bassist is Tina Weymouth and she also sometimes plays the keyboards.jerry Harrison played the keyboards and he also plays the bass once in awhile.Chris Frantz played the drum kit. The guitarist was Alex Weir The incredible back up singers were Lynn Mabrey and Ednah Holt.Steve Scales is other percussionist playing congas and bongos.
The man who gave Talking Heads their funky sound is producer Brian Eno, who co-wrote many of the band's hits. I saw the original run of this movie in one of Montreal's biggest cinemas, the 2000 seat Seville Festival. It had been a live Vaudeville theatre in the early 20th century, so it had a wide and deep stage in front of the huge screen. Some kids jumped up to dance on the stage, but the manager sent two big bouncers to get them off, even though they did not block the screen. Other young adults hopped up to dance to a couple of songs, then went back to their seats, to be replaced by another couple or two, and again the staff told them to sit down. But this time, the audience started clapping hands to the beat of the song, cheering the dancers on. The manager looked around, saw what it was that pleased his audience, and left the dancers alone, to a huge cheer from the entire audience. The rest of the movie was like a live Rock concert, with singing along, stage dancing and aisle dancing, applause after every song, the whole shebang. It remains one of my best movie experiences ever. Sadly, the Seville Festival Theatre had to close shortly afterward, because the landlord was going to build a mini mall in its stead. 35 years later, it is still a sad hole in the wall, full of debris and rubble. About a block from the famed old Montreal Forum, home of les Canadiens hockey team.
..when I saw this in the UK a year after SMS was released, at this point the whole audience were out of the seats dancing! never seen that at a movie before!
I loved when you guessed that something big was coming. I was like: Oh, you have no idea. But let me be the umpteenth person to say: *You stopped the video too soon!!!* Right after the point where you stopped it, David Byrne takes the mic and says, "Does anybody have any questions?" Such a great moment. Hope you've seen it again by now.... My very fave performance and song of theirs, and I love this whole concert. Go through the lyrics and listen to how this describes what it's like to live in wartime, and how all the running and even swimming gestures in the dancing have to do with running away, escaping the situation, and surviving.... You must know by now that at the end of the concert he introduces everyone on stage to the audience, so he gets their names out there.
The front of this band was fit AF! Do aerobics and then sing holy crap.. what a great song. So glad you found this movie .. one of my favs of all time since I was a little kid
Love you guys. Saw this show and prior ones. Love your reactions! Tina is a true warrior of the bottom! love Sifa Graffiti's demeanor she is definitely into it! Love Dan's enthusiasm! You guys are great!
The dancers keep up that pace the whole concert. This is from the Stop making sense tour. If you can find the video, you will love it. Johnathan Demme produced this movie. I saw this show in Ky. The arena wouldn’t turn down the lights because they were afraid of violence. Most of were too hammered to cause any trouble.
So genius, the songwriting, the performance - conceptualization and execution - and the irresistable groove laid down by the expanded ensemble. Deliriously happy, ready to make dinner. ;>D
I always think about the energy being put in in these performances and I always wonder about the sweat actually affecting the musical equipment. Am I the only person to think about this?
Two concerts were filmed and intercut, this unfortunatly ocsionly means it looks like he is lip synking and explans how his shirt is suddenly out of his trousers the best sound from each show was used.
Prior tour, documented on the live album "The Name of this Band is Talking Heads" -- has even a larger cast characters. I saw a show in New York, started with just the quartet ... and people came onto stage by ones or twos until it looked like a block party and sounded like a perfect funk orchestra. The ladies singing backup on that tour were Janice Pendarvis and Dolette McDonald. That was their pinnacle year, imo, artistically (the record "Remain in Light" and the tour following, documented on the live record). Mabry was with Sly and the Family Stone, and then with Pariliament/Funkadelic (and can't neglect The Brides of Funkenstein!) Holt was in the Ritchie Family, then her own band. She was kind of a big deal on the NY Club circuit, but as far as I know didn't have a lot of national exposure before this Talking Heads movie. The one concept I didn't care for in this concert movie was Byrne solo opening of Psycho Killer. I get that maybe it went first because it was their first hit. And then by adding the band it helps the movie "build up". But using the boombox beat instead of the band? When the song's most memorable bass line needs to be played by Tina? Listen to the recorded track for comparison. This has always bothered me. It was mostly David's ego making that decision, that decision doesn't make sense. And if no one answered you, Bernie Worrell the keyboard, was in Parliament Funkadelic. When Chris Frantz and Tina went to a Parliament concert it inspired them to write Burning Down the House.
If I was asked to name Great Minds in music Frank Zappa and David Byrne would be the first 2 I'd name Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush is up there you should check out Mahogany Rush "The King Who Stole The Universe" And Anything with The Woo Master Bernie Worrell is Epic He Les Claypool and Buckethead have made a lot of Amazing music together "Praxis" and Science Faxtion" as well

Met David Byrne a few times in NYC in the late 90's or so....always riding his bike. Nicest guy!

His last comment at the end of this song is fantastic, “any questions?” Is priceless.
'Why was he dancing with a lamp?' would be a good place to start :D

This song was written after David Byrne watched Matthew Landy Steene being interviewed on 60 Minutes about his years in Weather Underground.
