looks awesome, but all those moments when he holds the shield behind his head - is that supposed to be protecting from attacks from behind..?

If remember correctly it is called "blue dragonsword of western dragonsword (since seiryū is blue dragon who hails from the west)"

Only thing I would change is get rid of the raising one foot of the ground. Two feet in ground steadier than one. Otherwise I like it.

Isn't putting the shield behin d your head defeating the purpose of having a shield? Shouldn't the shield remain in front of you to protect you?

Looks like he does it when he is doing larger swings with the sword. So I'm guess he puts the shield further back when making offensive moves. I am not a practice of this art so its hard to say without know the intent behind this particular kata.

If you look closely, he only actually positions the shield behind his head during one offensive slashing movement that requires some extra momentum behind the sword. Any other time, the shield is positioned in the front before a new movement/direction, or protecting his sides and neck area when doing a forward thrust. I guess having the shield positioned to deflect is more effective than a straight/flat block. But as anthony points out, depends on the purpose of the kata.

Because the late Grandmaster Shimpo Matayoshi studied the Southern Chinese Styles of Kung Fu White Crane (Bak Hok) and Hung Gar.
