  • Han Kang of South Korea has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize for Literature. The Swedish Academy noted her "intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life."
Han, 53, has been publishing to critical acclaim in her native country since 1995. She achieved greater international recognition for "The Vegetarian." Originally published in 2007, it was first published in English in 2015 and went on to win the International Man Booker Prize a year later.
Her novels often feature female protagonists feeling isolated or at odds with South Korea's rigid social norms.
Han is the first Asian woman to win the world's most prestigious literary prize.

Her Korean name, Hankang, is the phonetic representation of the Korean pronunciation of Han River, the largest river in South Korea. How poetic is the connection between her name and South Korea's greatest river, especially as a Nobel Prize winner in Literature?

@@Sam-nb8ev The beauty of language is also lost in translation. Poetry in Hindi, Urdu, Ghazals are beautiful but you need to know the language. The depth of words and cultural aspect of it.

    - Taiwan🇹🇼, 20 million people, has 4 Nobel Prizes: 3 Physics and 1 Chemistry.
    - China🇨🇳, 1.4 billion people, 60 times the population of Taiwan, has only 3 prizes: one Peace, one Literature, and one Medical.
