Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album [33 ⅓ RPM]

- "Many of my tracks are better if you play them at 33 rpm. I have never denied that. That’s also why my pieces are so short: you can only press them onto maxi singles if they are short at 45 rpm. If they go for too long, then they don’t fit onto the vinyl-and then you can’t play them slower. That’s also the real reason why my album ended up so short. Buy it on vinyl. Instead of 33 minutes, you actually get 45, you understand? And there you have it, an album of standard length."

the more you listen "4" the more you realize how many details it got its actually so impressive. and even tho all the details it is still easy to choose sounds on its normal rpm
hey it's up again, hopefully they don't take it down.
nevermind that, hear 'yellow calx' dude...
That's why it was called 'intelligent' dance music.
@@codywhistlesnatch8274that name has always been lame and pretentious.
@@codywhistlesnatch8274 idm is a terrible genre descriptor
4 sounds euphoric at this speed, but by far the best one, for me, is Fingerbib, it went to somewhat popish tune to something ethereal and out of this world, ugh, best track by far.
fingerbib is so underrated ong
holy fuck i've been listening to this all wrong for 20+ years. This was one of the first CDs i bought back when people did that. Listened to it on repeat for months then every once in a while over years. This 33rpm thing is just, an almost Nujabes experience. Tapestry of sound.
My first album was 'Come to Daddy' My grandma took me shopping for my birthday when i was 13. I wanna say the next year, she let me buy Primus' discography. It was like 6 albums, at the time. Got it at Circuit City.
..but as far as Aphex goes, i saw the video to Come to Daddy on MTV2, but had NO idea what i was about to get into. Now, here i am, 39, and i just listened to '4' three times in the shower, then saw this..
Aphex is a part of me as much as the air i breathe.
@@atrocious_pr0xy Fuck yeah. Primus and aphex twin are awesome.
The LP was intended to be played at 45 rpm. The reason it sounds so "right" at 33⅓ is 'cause RDJ records his drill & bass tracks at a slower speed then speeds 'em up.
So while you may prefer listening to them at 33⅓, that isn't what RDJ intended (despite what he's jokingly claimed in more recent years).
That said, obviously listen to 'em however ya like. Just know that, no, you haven't been "listening to this all wrong for 20+ years." Peace✌️
You're right. I'm listening at this speed now and it's mind blowing.
This was the album that introduced me to Aphex Twin in 2019. Never knew what else he had in stock, but after hearing almost all of his music from the early 90s as AFX to today, I can say that Aphex Twin got me fully into electronic music. Any subgenre from IDM to techno, he's helped made me go further down my musical journey. Now thanks to him I'm also a fan on jungle and glitch music. Thank you Richard. Your music is next level and ahead of its time. ❤❤❤❤
Yeah, I got also fully into electronic music only to find out that there isn't much (except for ruclips.net/video/r-n5DFkhpVA/видео.html) that can top Aphex Twin, this LP in particular..

4 sounds even more impressive at 33 1/3. It hits even deeper and hints at something more infinite.
I love the concept of recording at 45 RPM to play at 33 1/3. Brilliant music, brilliant man.
actually, thsi was recorder at 33 1/3 rpm, rdj just lied in an interview like always
@@ilikefarting idk the vocal sample's definitely slowed in this version, could very well be an act of subversion in itself but i dont wanna give him too much credit : ^ )
I got this album on my 10th birthday from my older brother in 1997, it completely changed my perspective on more or less everything. It opened up my eyes to a whole new perspective of looking at / understanding things - even thought I didn’t understand why, at the time. This 33rpm version is almost like hearing it again for the first time - very nostalgic. Thanks Rich, and thanks Jessie for uploading this :)

Amen to that. Milkman was my first introduction in middle school. It just spiraled upwards from there. I own every vinyl and have never been more excited to see a live show in my entire life, first time seeing him after starting to listen 20 years ago. April 11th in Brooklyn baby!!!
@@ericwidder2954 How did the April 11th show go? I imagine it would have been awesome to finally see him live.
@@Jez4prez1 man... what a night, hard to put into words. It was awesome.
oh I wish I could get away with gifting my little brother the fucking RDJ album, he doesn't really like or understand the music I listen to, so it's impossible to get it to him, what an uncool kid...
Thanks so much man, what a fucking beautiful creation.
owwww fingerbib 😍
that was just what i needed
One of the best track ever /I love Melodies from Mars/, I like it with ,,Merde" video here on YT...
I just realized RDJ's brother, who died three years before he was born, who this album is named after, is the "Weakling Child"--something about hearing it slow brought that out.
the stillborn richard's grave is the cover of the girl/boy EP, its title track is featured on this album
And that's why he's called Aphex Twin in the first place.

Why is it you didn't include milkman?
jesse hey wondering if you can help me out; recently bought the Warp 180g repress of this album and my record player is set to 33 RPM but it plays it at the normal speed. Huge bummer. Is this because it's a repress? Do I need the original release to achieve the 33 RPM you have here? Please let me know thanks
Sorry this isn't helpful to you. Just wanted to say I searched the WPCR-928 that's on the image for this video and just bought it thinking it was a Japanese vinyl pressing. Nope, it's a CD. So mine won't play 33 RPM either.

Always preferred this version over the regular bpm one. This album helped me through some pretty dark times, very nostalgic to revisit now. This was my go-to back when I was using hard drugs, been clean for a few years now. Thanks for the upload bro I’ve probably listened to this 2-300 times lol ❤
The only thing that first hits me "wrong" are the quick voice sample bits on 4 when hearing this "slower"... the "normal"/CD version has the voice bits sounding "normal"..., but perhaps RDJ had this all figured out & either you hear the album "slower" or you hear it "faster" & the voice samples now sound "normal"....
either way, this is a cool new way to hear 1 of my favorite records!!!
The voice samples in To cure a weakling child are regular speed though.
Fingerbib sounds kinda like one of those deep dreaming AIs was trying to write a Vulfpeck song
Its like hearing it all again for the very first time. This is a special upload man, thank you so much for sharing.
Just heard it too directed from the Reddit. It’s fucking amazing.
The Richard D. James album @ 331/3 RPM is the RIchard D. James album. The vinyl plays at 33 rpm.
i think this is played 2/3 speed, like they grabbed the 45 rpm and played it at 33
@@dguillemi the Richard D James album is 33rpm. this was slowed down digitally i'm guessing. i've got a record player that can pitch shift down 20%, but it's still not as slow as what playing 45rpm records at 33rpm can do.
@@supermusicgood 25.9% is 45rpm to 33.3rpm. Audacity has it as a choice in the settings for changing the speed (tempo and pitch at the same time).

Amazing! thanks for this awesome upload, never thought of this before
In my opinion the best melodies richard has are in here and in syro also
and druqks
Drukqs has incredible melodies hidden inside harsher tracks. Almost like hidden shelters you run across while trying to survive in a menacing storm.
I agree with you
drukqs is overrated, his worst album ever
@@drgus8042 For a time Drukqs was his most underrated album.
if you put it on 1.25 speed it's just the album with a lower pitch
Yes, that is indeed what happens to songs when they get slower.
Still slower. You'd need something slightly faster than 1.33 speed (if it existed).
The slowed down version is 74.1% original speed. If it was exactly 75% original speed then speeding the video up by 1.3333333 would get it back to normal speed (but still the wrong pitch as you said).
Holy shit Yellow Calx

im confused, I own RDJ album on vinyl but it's default is 33 1/3 RPM meaning whatever pressing this is in the video is a smaller pressing. which version of the album was this? did the japanese release drop a two LP 45 bpm album?
Same here my guy. Where do i get my slow bits
There wasn't a 45 rpm pressing, they just slowed it down.
The digital files are slowed down 25.9% (equal to 45rpm to 33.3rpm). Not just a tempo change or a pitch change of course, but a speed change (both). The popular free audio editor Audacity has it as a preset in the speed change tool.

I listened to Girls/Boys and Milkman on 33 rpm my whole life!!! 45 rpm isn't right ‼️
Girl/Boy is my favorite on 33 1/2, though I love the entire album at on either rpm (not crazy about Cornish Acid or Corn Marth)
Slowing down an album is equivalent to stretching out a blunt with tobacco/fanta
But the record plays at 33 1/3 normally doesn't it? or is a double LP version I'm not aware of?
It's a figure of speech. The digital version being slowed (both tempo and pitch) by 25.9% is the same as playing a 45rpm record at 33 1/3.
Logan Rock Witch is amazing at this RPM, way better than the original IMO. thanks for this jesse
Also, it's Logan not Logon (was mistaken as Logon because of "Richard's poor handwriting")
also, check out Colin Read's intro to "Spirit Quest" an amazing skate film produced and edited by him, the song is not mentioned anywhere in any soundtracks for the film.

ah wow didn't know that, appreciate it
. this skate video is great
Yeah "Logan Rock" is a town landmark in Lanner, and there's a legend about the ghost of a witch haunting the area.
I had my mp3 of the song marked as Logon for years before I found out. I also had "corn mouth" instead of the correct "carn marth" (another town landmark).
The Richard D James Album has never been pressed at 45rpm. No idea why he thought it was. Both sides are too long to fit at that speed (over 15 minutes for side A and 17 and a half minutes for side B).
he didnt think, he just lied like he almost always does
it seems to have 4 right-left fouls, right..THATSounds4 ever..!"!"!
I just bought this Album on Vinyl and something really weird happens, when I play it at 33 rpm it gives the 45 rpm music version, when you change it to 45 rpm it plays it even faster (audio speed matching 61.3 rpm if I did the math right)
So if I want to get this exact version from my vinyl I have to play it at 24.2 rpm (I doubt there is a LP player that gives me this exact speed)
Is it something weird with my copy of the Album or WTF is happening?
There's nothing wrong with your copy. You are hearing the official album. What happened is that, at the time of the album release (1996), Aphex Twin also released these songs separately as 45bpm maxi-singles, so when you play these maxi singles in 33bpm speed, the songs are played slower... There was never a 45 bpm vinyl edition of the album as a whole.
@@joaomoura4213 Since when are there 3 singles off the album? The GirlBoy EP is the only side release from the album (and yes that one is 45rpm, as is normal for the 12" single format).

Too bad the vinyl I just bought is already normal speed at 33 1/3 so this isn’t an option for me
Yeah that shit pissed me off a few years ago. This some youtube exclusive shit.
Meanwhile, Richard is laughing his ass off that anyone took that interview quote seriously. He was taking the piss, guys. Read or watch some more of his interviews, notice how most of what he says is kind of ridiculous and might as well be made up. My guess is that about half of that is actually made up (he's a weird guy and some of his weird stories are also true, but definitely not as much as you should take at face value). Either way, it's good to keep in mind, he sometimes makes up ridiculous stories just to fuck with interviewers and the fan base.
I mean it could be that he pressed the album at the wrong speed. But think about it for a bit. His album is short because of the size of a 45 rpm single? How does that work and how many of those tracks actually came out on single? Why is Richard somehow the only artist with this "problem" ?
Lots of (experimental) music sounds pretty cool when slowed down and listened to intentionally. I personally really like the slowed version of Vordhosbn. Doesn't mean it was intended that way. Maybe the point is that Richard doesn't care at what speed you listen to it.
Listen to Slowed Fingerbib then. Maybe it sounds cool (cause it's a slowed version of one of AFX's best tracks EVER), but now try to imagine this track being composed at this speed. Doesn't work. At least not in my imagination, the groove is just too slow for that weird cycle of five repetition. And the note hits in the melodies don't sound right for real time.
Finally there is the end of Corn Mouth. The repetition is at exactly the speed you get if you have a scratch or dent on your CD at that point and the CD player trips on it. I guess you have to remember this scary sound from taking your CDs to way too many parties in the 90s and 2000s. When I first heard it, I was sure the CD had been damaged and almost got up to skip the track. I just heard the slowed version of this ending, now it's just slow retrigger with no meaning to it, it's the wrong speed.
