Four things are huge in the original version of "Burn": the guitar riff, which is second to none; the twin vocal performance, which defies the scheme of a metal band headed by a domineering singer; the baroque-drenched solo on the organ; and incidental counter-melodies on the bass. Regardless of what inevitably happens to senior rockstars, it's been at least 35 years since DC and his band (whichever may be its current population) made themselves fundamentally strange to performing any song of the kind. Today's performances of "Burn" by Whitesnake (incl. the one on "The Purple Album") only make the old impossibility more patent than it used to be in the past millennium.
Not just the guitar riff, more so the solo. You can't make a statement like this without mentioning Paice's phenomenal drumming. Lastly, Deep Purple is not and has never been a metal band.
