Pete Fornatale interviewed both Brian and Dennis in the 70s, you can tell from those past broadcasts he was giddy about Smile and its potential. So happy to see him being as excited about it even after its release 30+ years later :)

If it is all an act on Brian’s part it furthers his genius status. The ability to keep contact with the human race at arms length without being labeled an asshole is a victory.

How on earth did I not see this? I live for Brian. I've read every book. I've seen every film, documentary and of course listened to every album now, easily over 1000 times. Brian is really coherent in this interview. I chalk that up to the interviewer and David Leaf being there. Brian must be very comfortable with them. The interviewer is not known to me but I certainly know of David and actually met him once. He's a very nice guy. I just love Brian's candor and his ease in which he goes along with the interviewer. I'm so shocked Brian mentioned how parts of Pet sounds bother him now because it brings out reminders of his
drug days. Also, I can't believe Brian dropped two F bombs. That's a first for me. Thanks for uploading this. Made my day.

I love how the interviewer immediately tries to remind Brian that they have talked before as if Brian cares one way or the other. Because he doesn't. Interviewers trying to insert themselves into the relevance of the history of somebody that actually made history just cracks me up

He shows Brian a picture of both of them from 300 years ago. Look how impressed Brian is. This is just insane and humorous at the same time. He's going to do Brian the favor of doing an updated picture of the both of them. Brian Wilson. One of the most influential musical artists of our time, and some goofy DJ getting a selfie with him. This is great stuff.

*Objective fact & anyone disagrees is no1 for me to associate with & that is that Brian Wilson is THE embodiment of brilliance & No1 anywhere Ever has come close to his output from the time he was 20 to 25 , the handful of gems in the 5 year period after; contributing indirectly to rockNroll's renaissance a decade after his apex & the more recent gems (repeated for lack of substituting a synonym) etc. There were/are 2 American groups who belong in Mt Rushmore of rock/pop- #1 the Beach Boys (obviously) & the Ramones. Period.* 🇺🇲🎼

A genius can’t explain their work or how they did it, what the words mean. It’s up to the person listening to what it means to them. No wonder Brian resists these type of interviews.

Sad to think that he will soon pass without having ever given many great interviews. This one comes close, but still runs into the cliche territory that makes him act terse and play dumb out of spite. I wish people would bat back more, have fun with the non-music questions, talk about album cuts and music theory, because he clearly has so much to say when he feels it's worth showing his real self.

Speaking for myself, this is a somewhat difficult interview to watch. It would appear that 2/3 of his mental capacity is somewhat gone. The part that seems to have remained is just his memory recall of everything from the past. He seems to have no rationale in the present to have a basic conversation that could float around from topic to topic. He seems to have no forward thinking and is only anchored in the past. I remember him saying in an interview once, that his biggest regret was taking acid because it tore his head off. To his credit, I think his participation in a 2012 reunion tour was outstanding. He actually sat at the piano and played and sang back up and lead and finished what was to be a very long tour. I think his late wife meant well, but I believe she supplied him with some lousy doctors after his departure from Dr. Landy. after departing Landy, Brian put on weight and once again became somewhat of a recluse and somewhat frightened whenever giving interviews. Brian just never seemed as confident after departing Dr. Landy… I think his new doctors did not do such a good job striking a good balance.

It's remarkable how much you got wrong here. Truly.
Brian is a survivor, and dealt with issues long before drugs. But when it comes to interviews, he hates them, and it usually shows. However he and Pete had been friendly for 35 years and he did his best here. But the reality is that Brian doesn't care a ton about a lot of what happened in the past because he knows he proved himself long ago. He's just looking to relax and have a good meal. That's his idea of a great day.

I got to keep listening cuz that part of its hilarious. There's no part of Brian's history that I don't know. But I got to hear this goofy DJ try to put his fingerprint on something, anything relevant about anything.
